Chapter 8: The Secret Agreement

The investigation uncovered something nobody expected.

The Whitmores had not just manipulated Daniel.

They had planned everything.

The deeper my father’s team searched, the darker the truth became.

A hidden company.

Secret payments.

Private meetings.

And one document that changed everything.

My father placed it in front of me.

“This is the agreement.””

I picked it up.

The title alone made my stomach tighten.

“Marriage Support Arrangement.””

I read the first paragraph.

It was not a legal marriage contract.

It was something worse.

A plan.

The Whitmore family had promised Daniel financial support if he maintained a relationship with me.

Not because they cared about our marriage.

Because they believed my family connections would eventually benefit them.

I read the signatures.

Daniel.

Chloe.

Eleanor.

My hands shook.

“He signed this?””

My father nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked at the date.

Two weeks before our wedding.

Before he promised forever.

Before he looked into my eyes and told me I was the only person he needed.

I felt something inside me finally break.

Not my heart.

Something else.

The last piece of hope.

Because part of me had still been searching for an explanation.

A reason.

Something that made Daniel less cruel.

But there was nothing.

He knew.

He chose.

The next morning, my father called a meeting.

Not with the press.

Not with the public.

With the Whitmores.

They arrived at Carter headquarters looking nervous.

The difference between powerful people and ordinary people was often simple.

Powerful people knew when they had lost.

Eleanor still tried to pretend.

“This is unnecessary.””

My father looked at her.

“You entered my daughter’s life under false intentions.””

She frowned.

“We cared about Emma.””

“No.””

His voice was cold.

“You cared about what Emma represented.””

Chloe looked away.

For once, she had nothing to say.

My father placed the agreement on the table.

Daniel’s face changed.

Eleanor went silent.

“You thought nobody would find this.””

She looked at him.

“You cannot prove—”

My father interrupted.

“I already did.””

The room became quiet.

Then Daniel spoke.

“Mom.””

Everyone looked at him.

His voice was low.

“You knew?””

Eleanor avoided his eyes.

And that was when Daniel finally understood.

His family had used him too.

The realization destroyed something inside him.

“You told me I was protecting our future.””

Eleanor remained silent.

“You told me Emma would never know.””

Still silent.

“You knew this would destroy my marriage.””

Chloe suddenly snapped.

“Oh, please.””

Everyone looked at her.

“You’re acting like the victim now?””

Daniel stared.

“What?””

She laughed bitterly.

“You think you’re innocent?””

Her voice became sharper.

“You wanted the same thing we wanted.””

Daniel looked horrified.

“I loved her.””

“No.””

Chloe shook her head.

“You loved winning.””

The words hit him.

Because they were true.

And for the first time, Daniel saw himself clearly.

After the meeting, my father walked me outside.

“You okay?””

I nodded.

“I think so.””

He smiled.

“That is progress.””

I looked at the city.

“Do you think people can change?””

He considered the question.

“Yes.””

“Do you think Daniel can?””

My father was quiet.

“That depends on whether he changes because he lost something…”

He looked at me.

“Or because he finally understands what he did.””

I knew what he meant.

Some people regretted consequences.

Others regretted hurting people.

There was a difference.

And I was no longer interested in figuring out which one Daniel was.

That night, I received a message.

From Chloe.

At first, I ignored it.

Then another came.

Then another.

Finally, I opened it.

“I need to talk to you.””

I almost deleted it.

But something stopped me.

A final message appeared.

“It’s about your baby.””

My heart stopped.

I stared at the screen.

Then another message arrived.

“Daniel never told you the whole truth.””

I felt cold.

Because I knew one thing about the Whitmores.

They never revealed secrets unless they wanted something.

And whatever Chloe was about to tell me…

It was bigger than the marriage.

May you like

Bigger than the money.

Bigger than the betrayal.
