Chapter 6: The Woman Who Knew the Truth

The next morning, I met the woman in a quiet café away from the city.

I almost did not go.

Almost.

But something inside me knew.

The worst part of betrayal was not the truth.

It was the unanswered questions.

And I had too many.

The woman introduced herself as Rachel.

She had worked as Eleanor Whitmore’s personal assistant for seven years.

She looked nervous.

Like she was afraid someone was watching her.

“You’re sure you want to tell me this?””

I studied her.

“You contacted me.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

“Then tell me.””

She took a deep breath.

“Daniel did not accidentally become close to your family.””

My fingers tightened around my coffee cup.

“What does that mean?””

Rachel looked down.

“He knew about you before you met.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

“No.””

“I’m sorry.””

I shook my head.

“That’s impossible.””

Rachel pulled out her phone.

She showed me a message.

A message between Daniel and someone saved as “C.W.””

Chloe Whitmore.

The date was two months before I met Daniel.

My hands started trembling.

The message was short.

“She is the one. Her father’s company will solve everything.””

I felt sick.

Another message.

“Make her trust you. Do not tell her who we are investigating.””

I looked away.

Because suddenly every memory hurt.

The first time Daniel approached me.

The way he seemed to know exactly what to say.

The way he always appeared when I needed someone.

I thought it was fate.

Maybe it was strategy.

“Why are you telling me this now?””

Rachel’s eyes filled with guilt.

“Because I saw what happened at the gala.””

She swallowed.

“And I realized they were going to destroy you completely.””

I looked at her.

“What do you mean?””

She hesitated.

“There is something else.””

“What?””

Rachel lowered her voice.

“Chloe did not lose a ring.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She never lost anything.””

My stomach turned.

“Then why?””

Rachel looked at me.

“Because the ring was just an excuse.””

“For what?””

“To publicly remove you.””

I stared.

“What?””

Rachel continued.

“Eleanor planned to announce something at the gala.””

My heart raced.

“What?””

She looked terrified.

“She wanted Daniel to divorce you.””

Silence.

“And blame you.””

The café suddenly felt too small.

“They planned everything.””

Rachel nodded.

“They wanted to make you look unstable. Greedy. Difficult.””

My hands went cold.

“Why?””

“Because they believed if they destroyed your reputation, your father would be forced to step in.””

I understood.

They did not just want my marriage.

They wanted my family’s power.

Rachel looked at me.

“They knew who you were.””

The words hurt.

More than I expected.

Because it meant every insult had been intentional.

Every humiliation.

Every cruel smile.

A performance.

I left the café feeling different.

Not broken.

Not defeated.

Angry.

For years, I thought I was fighting to prove I belonged.

Now I realized I had been fighting people who never intended to accept me.

When I returned to my father’s house, he was waiting.

One look at my face and he knew.

“What happened?””

I placed the phone on the table.

“I know everything.””

He read the messages.

His expression changed.

Not shock.

Something colder.

“Dad.””

He looked up.

“Yes?””

“I want them exposed.””

A pause.

“Are you sure?””

I thought about the woman I was before.

The woman who stayed quiet.

The woman who begged people to respect her.

She was gone.

“Yes.””

My father nodded.

“Then we do it properly.””

He picked up his phone.

“Call the legal team.””

I looked outside.

The city stretched beneath us.

Somewhere out there, the Whitmores still believed they could control the story.

They were wrong.

Because this time, I was not hiding.

May you like

And this time…

Everyone would know the truth.
