Chapter 6: The Secret Buried at the Quarry
The old quarry sat twenty miles outside Dallas, surrounded by empty land and forgotten roads.
A place where nobody went unless they had a reason.
Or unless they wanted nobody to find them.
That was the thought repeating in my head as Daniel drove.
Ryan's car had been found there.
Blood had been found inside.
And nobody could tell me whether my husband was alive.
The entire drive felt unreal.
The world outside the window continued like nothing had happened.
Cars passed us.
People walked into restaurants.
Families sat together on patios, laughing under warm Texas skies.
Meanwhile, my entire life was collapsing piece by piece.
My husband might be hurt.
My father might be alive.
My mother-in-law might have spent years destroying everyone around her.
And the man I trusted most might be hiding something from me.
I looked at Daniel.
“Tell me the truth.””
His hands tightened around the steering wheel.
“I am.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You're telling me pieces.””
He didn't answer.
“Why did you say Ryan did something?””
Daniel stayed silent.
“The note said my father knows what Ryan did.””
“Yes.””
“What did Ryan do?””
“I don't know.””
I turned toward him.
“You don't know?””
“I know what the evidence suggests.””
“Then tell me.””
Daniel sighed.
“Sarah…”
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“I spent years believing I was crazy because Linda made me feel like I was always wrong.””
I looked down at my hands.
“I defended Ryan. I defended his family. I defended people who never defended me.””
Daniel glanced at me.
“You deserve answers.””
“Then give them.””
He was quiet for several seconds.
Finally, he said,
“Before you met Ryan, there was an incident.””
“What kind of incident?””
“One involving your father.””
I waited.
“Richard and Linda told everyone your father disappeared because he was guilty.””
“Guilty of what?””
“Stealing money from the company.””
I stared at him.
“But you said he wasn't charged.””
“Correct.””
“Why?””
“Because the evidence disappeared.””
My stomach tightened.
“Someone destroyed it.””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Daniel didn't answer.
I already knew.
“Richard and Linda.””
“Possibly.””
“You still say possibly?””
“Because suspicion is not proof.””
I laughed quietly.
“Funny.””
“What?””
“Everyone in this story gets the benefit of the doubt except me.””
Daniel looked hurt.
“That isn't fair.””
“No?””
I turned toward him.
“My husband accused me of stealing. His mother attacked me. His family watched. And now I find out my entire life might have been built on lies.””
I swallowed.
“Tell me what Ryan did.””
Daniel looked away.
“I don't know if he did anything.””
“But you think he did.””
“I think Ryan knows more than he told you.””
That hurt.
Because deep down, I knew he was right.
The hardest part wasn't believing Ryan could lie.
It was accepting that he might have been lying while I was fighting for him.
The quarry entrance appeared ahead.
Yellow police tape surrounded the area.
A patrol car sat near the road.
Daniel parked.
Before we got out, he looked at me.
“Are you ready?””
“No.””
He nodded.
“Neither am I.””
We walked toward the scene.
A detective approached.
“Daniel.””
“Detective Harris.””
They shook hands.
The detective looked at me.
“Mrs. Carter?””
I nodded.
“I'm Sarah.””
His expression softened.
“I’m sorry.””
That word scared me.
People only said sorry when they knew something you didn't.
“What happened?””
He hesitated.
“We found the vehicle.””
“Ryan?””
“We don't know.””
“Is there blood?””
“Yes.””
My heart dropped.
“How much?””
“Enough that we requested a forensic team.””
I looked toward the quarry.
“Can I see the car?””
The detective looked at Daniel.
Then back at me.
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because it's evidence.””
“It's my husband's car.””
“And you’re a potential witness.””
“A witness to what?””
Silence.
I stepped closer.
“Detective.””
He looked uncomfortable.
“What?””
“Do you think my husband is alive?””
He didn't answer immediately.
That was worse than any answer.
“We're searching the area.””
I looked past him.
Down into the dark quarry.
“Where?””
“Near the lower access road.””
Daniel and I followed him.
The car sat near a dirt path.
Ryan's car.
I knew it instantly.
I had sat in that passenger seat hundreds of times.
We had driven to weekend trips in that car.
We had argued in that car.
We had kissed in that car.
Now the driver's door hung open.
The windshield was cracked.
The inside was covered with evidence markers.
I couldn't move.
“Sarah.””
Daniel's voice was soft.
I stepped closer.
“That's his.””
I pointed.
A jacket on the passenger seat.
Ryan's jacket.
I had bought it for him last Christmas.
My throat tightened.
The detective spoke quietly.
“We found this under the seat.””
He handed Daniel a plastic evidence bag.
Inside was a phone.
Not Ryan's regular phone.
An older model.
Daniel looked confused.
“This isn't his.””
The detective nodded.
“We know.””
“Then why was it in his car?””
“We don't know.””
Daniel looked at me.
My heart started racing.
“Play it.””
The detective frowned.
“Excuse me?””
“The phone.””
I pointed.
“Check it.””
Daniel unlocked it.
There was only one saved file.
A recording.
He pressed play.
Static filled the air.
Then a man's voice.
Ryan.
My breath stopped.
“If you're hearing this, something went wrong.””
Daniel looked at me.
The recording continued.
“I don't know who I can trust anymore.””
My eyes filled.
“Ryan…”
His voice sounded exhausted.
Scared.
“I found out my mother wasn't the only person hiding things from me.””
A pause.
“My father knew.””
Daniel looked toward the detective.
The recording continued.
“I should have told Sarah everything.””
I closed my eyes.
Hearing him say my name hurt.
“I should have told her about the agreement.””
My eyes opened.
The postnuptial agreement.
“I should have told her about Emily.””
Emily looked shocked.
Daniel's face hardened.
Ryan continued.
“But the biggest thing I should have told her is the truth about her father.””
My heart stopped.
The detective looked at me.
“Her father?””
Ryan's voice became quieter.
“Sarah's father didn't disappear because of what everyone thinks.””
A pause.
“He disappeared because he found out my family was using him.””
I couldn't breathe.
“He found evidence.””
Static.
“He tried to expose them.””
Another pause.
“And I helped my father stop him.””
The world went silent.
My knees almost gave out.
Daniel grabbed my arm.
“No.””
The recording continued.
“I was twenty-two years old.””
Ryan's voice cracked.
“I thought I was protecting my family.””
I stared at the phone.
“No…”
“I didn't know what they were really doing.””
A deep breath.
“But when I found out, it was too late.””
I couldn't move.
“My mother told me Sarah's father was dangerous.””
Another pause.
“She lied.””
The detective looked at me.
Ryan's voice continued.
“I saw him.””
My entire body froze.
“I saw him after everyone thought he was gone.””
The recording stopped.
Static.
Then nothing.
Nobody spoke.
Finally, I whispered,
“He saw my father.””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“When?””
The detective looked at the phone.
“There's more.””
He tapped the screen.
A second audio file appeared.
Ryan's voice returned.
“This is the last thing I know.””
The recording was quieter.
“If anything happens to me, Sarah needs to know.””
My eyes burned.
“Ryan…”
“I found him.””
Daniel leaned closer.
“Who?””
Ryan whispered,
“Her father.””
My heart stopped.
“He's alive.””
I covered my mouth.
“I found him three days ago.””
Three days.
Before today.
Before Linda attacked me.
Before everything exploded.
“He gave me information.””
A pause.
“And I realized something.””
Ryan's breathing became uneven.
“My family didn't just destroy his life.””
Silence.
“They destroyed mine too.””
I looked at Daniel.
He looked just as stunned.
The recording continued.
“I was going to tell Sarah tonight.””
A sound in the background.
A door opening.
Ryan suddenly lowered his voice.
“Someone knows.””
Then the recording ended.
I stared at the phone.
“He found my father.””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
“And he was going to tell me.””
“Yes.””
“Then someone stopped him.””
Nobody answered.
The detective looked toward the quarry.
“We found tire tracks leading away from here.””
“Someone took him?””
“Possibly.””
I looked at the blood inside the car.
“What if he was injured?””
The detective didn't respond.
I turned away.
I couldn't look anymore.
Daniel followed.
“Sarah.””
I wiped my eyes.
“No.””
“What?””
“I spent years believing Ryan was the person who would save me.””
I looked back at his abandoned car.
“And now I don't even know if he needs saving from someone else.””
Daniel said nothing.
Because he knew I was right.
A police officer suddenly approached.
“Detective.””
The detective turned.
“What?””
“We found something near the edge of the quarry.””
The officer looked at me.
“Mrs. Carter?””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
He handed over a small envelope.
“This was addressed to you.””
I stared at it.
Not again.
Another message.
Another piece of a puzzle nobody wanted me to solve.
I opened it slowly.
Inside was a handwritten note.
My father's handwriting.
I knew immediately.
Because I had spent years staring at old birthday cards.
Old letters.
Old memories.
The words blurred through my tears.
Sarah,
If you are reading this, they know I found the truth.
Trust no one who tells you they were protecting you.
Especially not the man you married.
My hands started shaking.
At the bottom was one final sentence.
The one that destroyed the last piece of hope I had been holding onto.
May you like
Ryan knows where I am.
And he has known for years.
