Chapter 2: The Man Who Knew Everything
“I've been waiting for you to call.””
The voice on the other end was steady.
Too steady.
I closed my eyes for half a second.
Across the room, Ryan was staring at me as if he already knew exactly who I had called.
He did.
Of course he did.
There were only a handful of people whose names could make Ryan's face lose every trace of color.
And the man on the phone was one of them.
“Where are you?”” he asked.
I looked around Linda's living room.
At the people who had watched me get dragged across the floor.
At the husband who had watched it happen and then asked whether I had stolen his mother's bracelet.
“I'm at Linda's.””
A pause.
Then his voice dropped.
“Are you hurt?””
I looked down at my knees.
The skin was red and already swelling.
My scalp burned where Linda had grabbed me.
“Yes.””
His breathing changed.
“I'm coming.””
“No.””
Ryan took another step toward me.
“Sarah.””
I lifted one hand.
He stopped.
“I don't want you to come here.””
“Too late.””
The call ended.
I lowered the phone.
Linda folded her arms.
“Who was that?””
I looked at her.
“You know.””
She didn't answer.
Ryan did.
“Why did you call him?””
There was something different in his voice now.
Not anger.
Fear.
Real fear.
I hadn't heard that tone from him in years.
“Because you didn't help me.””
“Sarah, that doesn't make sense.””
“Then explain it.””
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
I waited.
He looked toward his mother.
Then toward his father.
Then back at me.
“You've made this much bigger than it needed to be.””
I stared at him.
“Your mother assaulted me.””
“Mom was emotional.””
“That is not an excuse.””
“She thought you took something.””
“That still isn't an excuse.””
“She was upset.””
“And you were what?””
Ryan's face tightened.
“I was trying to keep things from getting worse.””
I laughed quietly.
“You think they couldn't get worse?””
I pointed to the carpet.
“My wedding ring is lying at your feet.””
Ryan looked down.
For the first time, he seemed to notice it.
Then he looked at me.
“Don't do this.””
“Do what?””
“Throw away our marriage because of one terrible afternoon.””
“One afternoon?””
I took a step toward him.
“This has been happening for four years.””
He shook his head.
“That's not true.””
“You let your mother humiliate me at Thanksgiving.””
“She was stressed.””
“You let her accuse me of manipulating you when we bought our house.””
“She was worried.””
“You let her tell everyone I married you for money.””
“She didn't mean it.””
“You always have an excuse.””
His expression hardened.
“And you always want me to choose sides.””
I stared at him.
There it was.
The sentence I had heard in different forms for years.
Choose sides.
As if I were his enemy.
As if defending his wife against cruelty meant betraying his mother.
“I'm not asking you to choose sides,” I said quietly.
“I'm asking you to know the difference between right and wrong.””
He looked away.
That hurt more than yelling would have.
I bent down and picked up my ring.
I turned it over in my palm.
The diamond caught the light.
My wedding ring.
A symbol of something I had once believed was permanent.
I slipped it into my pocket.
Ryan noticed.
“Sarah.””
“No.””
“Please.””
“Don't.””
“I love you.””
I stared at him.
For a second, I almost believed him.
Then I remembered him standing there while Linda dragged me across the kitchen floor.
Love wasn't supposed to require you to beg for basic protection.
The front door suddenly opened.
Everyone turned.
The man who entered was tall, broad-shouldered, and dressed in a dark button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled to his forearms.
He looked like he had driven fast.
His eyes moved across the room.
To me.
To my torn blouse.
To my knees.
To my hair.
Then his expression changed.
“Sarah.””
I nodded.
“I'm okay.””
He looked at Ryan.
“No, she isn't.””
Ryan stiffened.
“Daniel, this isn't your business.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Your wife called me.””
“And you came running?””
“Yes.””
The answer was so immediate that nobody spoke.
Daniel walked toward me.
He stopped a few feet away.
“Did she do this?””
His eyes were on my hair.
I didn't answer.
I didn't need to.
Daniel looked toward Linda.
She lifted her chin.
“She stole from me.””
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“That doesn't give you the right to touch her.””
“You don't know what happened.””
“I know exactly what happened.””
Linda frowned.
“How?””
Daniel reached into his jacket and pulled out his phone.
“You really want to do this here?””
Linda's expression changed.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel looked at Ryan.
“Ask your mother.””
Ryan's eyes narrowed.
“Ask her what?””
Daniel turned his phone around.
I couldn't see the screen from where I stood.
But Ryan could.
And whatever he saw made his face go completely blank.
“What is that?”” he asked.
Daniel's voice was calm.
“Something she thought nobody would ever find.””
Linda stepped forward.
“Daniel, put that away.””
He did not move.
“Tell them.””
She glared at him.
“Tell them what?””
“That the bracelet wasn't stolen.””
Silence.
I felt the room shift.
Ryan looked at his mother.
“What did you say?””
Linda's face tightened.
Daniel continued.
“The bracelet was never in Sarah's possession.””
Ryan looked at me.
Then at his mother.
“Mom?””
Linda said nothing.
“Mom, what is he talking about?””
She snapped, “He's lying.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
He tapped his phone.
“I have records.””
Ryan stepped closer.
“Records of what?””
“Where the bracelet was purchased.””
Linda's face drained.
Daniel looked at me.
“I need you to hear this too.””
I nodded slowly.
He said, “That bracelet was insured.””
I frowned.
“So?””
“Three weeks ago, Linda increased the insurance coverage.””
Richard's expression changed.
“What?””
Linda spun around.
“Richard, don't listen to him.””
Daniel continued.
“She also reported the bracelet as being at risk of theft.””
Ryan looked confused.
“Why would she do that?””
Daniel's gaze moved to Linda.
“Because she planned to report it stolen.””
Nobody moved.
My heart began pounding again.
“Why?””
Daniel hesitated.
Then he looked directly at Ryan.
“Because the insurance payout would be worth more than the bracelet.””
Ryan shook his head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“No.””
Daniel's voice stayed calm.
“I checked.””
“You're accusing my mother of insurance fraud?””
“I'm telling you what the evidence shows.””
Linda stepped forward.
“You have no right to investigate me.””
Daniel almost smiled.
“I wasn't investigating you.””
He looked at me.
“I was investigating a different matter.””
Ryan frowned.
“What matter?””
Daniel didn't answer immediately.
I noticed something in his expression.
Something he hadn't told me during the call.
I stepped closer.
“What matter?””
He looked at me.
“Do you remember the night your house was broken into last year?””
My stomach dropped.
Of course I remembered.
Six months after Ryan and I bought our house, someone had broken the back door.
Nothing valuable was taken.
Not the television.
Not the computers.
Not even the jewelry in our bedroom.
But the police had said it appeared to be a burglary.
We had changed the locks.
Installed cameras.
Tried to move on.
Ryan had always told me not to think about it.
Daniel continued.
“That wasn't random.””
I stared at him.
“What are you saying?””
“I’m saying someone wanted you to believe your house had been targeted.””
Ryan took a step back.
“Why?””
Daniel looked at him.
“Because someone was looking for documents.””
“What documents?””
Daniel glanced at me.
“Financial documents.””
The room went silent.
I felt cold.
“Mine?””
“No.””
He looked at Ryan.
“His.””
Ryan's expression changed.
“What are you talking about?””
Daniel lowered his phone.
“Your father created a trust twenty-two years ago.””
Richard went completely still.
Linda whispered, “Stop.””
Daniel ignored her.
“The trust was designed to pass control of several properties and investment accounts to Ryan when he turned thirty.””
Ryan stared at his father.
“What trust?””
Richard opened his mouth.
Linda spoke first.
“There is no trust.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Yes, there is.””
Ryan turned toward his father.
“Dad?””
Richard looked exhausted.
“I was going to tell you.””
Linda snapped, “Richard!””
He flinched.
That single reaction told me more than any document could have.
I looked at Ryan.
He looked stunned.
“What does this have to do with Sarah?””
Daniel answered.
“Everything.””
Linda moved toward him.
“You need to leave.””
“No.””
“Now.””
“No.””
Her voice became sharp.
“This is my house.””
Daniel nodded.
“Then explain why you transferred money out of one of Ryan's accounts six months ago.””
Ryan's face went white.
“My account?””
I looked at him.
He looked at his mother.
“Mom?””
Linda said nothing.
“Mom, what is he talking about?””
Richard closed his eyes.
“Ryan…”
“Dad?””
Richard whispered,
“I should have told you years ago.””
Ryan's breathing became uneven.
“Tell me what?””
Richard looked at Linda.
She shook her head.
“Don't.””
Richard swallowed.
“The trust account was never under Ryan's direct control.””
Ryan stared at him.
“Why?””
“Because your mother convinced me it was safer that way.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“She controlled it.””
I looked at Linda.
For the first time since I had known her, she didn't look powerful.
She looked cornered.
Ryan's voice dropped.
“How much money?””
No one answered.
“How much?””
Daniel said, “Enough that you should be asking where it went.””
Ryan looked at his mother as though he had never seen her before.
“How much?””
Linda finally spoke.
“You don't understand.””
“Then explain it.””
“I did what I had to do.””
Ryan laughed bitterly.
“What does that mean?””
“You were irresponsible.””
“I was twenty-two!””
“You didn't understand money.””
“So you took mine?””
“I protected it.””
Ryan's face hardened.
“From me?””
“From everyone.””
His eyes narrowed.
“From Sarah?””
Linda looked at me.
“Yes.””
The word hit me like a slap.
Ryan turned toward her.
“What?””
“She knew you would give everything away to her.””
I shook my head.
“That isn't true.””
Linda pointed at me.
“You were always after his money.””
“No, I wasn't.””
“You married him knowing what his father owned.””
“I didn't know!””
Linda laughed.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“I didn't know about any trust!””
Ryan looked between us.
Daniel spoke quietly.
“That's exactly why Sarah was dangerous to your mother.””
Ryan frowned.
“Dangerous?””
“She couldn't control her.””
I felt a chill.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel looked at me.
“She tried.””
Ryan stared at him.
“She tried to control my wife?””
Daniel didn't answer.
He didn't have to.
Suddenly, every strange thing Linda had done over the years came rushing back.
The questions about my job.
The questions about our finances.
The insistence that Ryan shouldn't put my name on certain accounts.
Her obsession with our mortgage.
Her constant pressure to convince Ryan that I was irresponsible.
I had thought it was hatred.
Maybe it had been something much more calculated.
Ryan looked toward his mother.
“Where's the bracelet?””
Linda's eyes flickered.
No answer.
“Mom.””
Still nothing.
“Where is it?””
She looked at Richard.
Richard looked away.
Daniel took out another phone.
“I can tell you.””
Linda's face collapsed.
“No.””
Daniel pressed play.
A voice came through the speaker.
Linda's voice.
Clear.
Unmistakable.
“I'll say she took it. Ryan already thinks she's hiding money from him. He'll believe me.””
My blood ran cold.
Ryan stared at the phone.
The recording continued.
“She'll leave eventually. And once she does, Ryan will come back to me.””
Nobody breathed.
Ryan looked at his mother.
“Where did you record that?””
Daniel answered.
“She said it in a public place.””
Linda lunged toward him.
“Turn that off!””
Daniel stepped back.
Ryan grabbed his mother's wrist.
“Where is the bracelet?””
Linda froze.
“Ryan…”
“Where is it?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I never wanted to hurt you.””
“You dragged my wife across the floor.””
“I was angry.””
“You framed her.””
“I didn't frame her!””
“Then where is my bracelet?””
Linda's mouth opened.
No answer.
Daniel quietly said,
“It's in the safe.””
Ryan turned.
“What safe?””
Daniel looked at Richard.
Richard pointed toward the hallway.
“Upstairs.””
Ryan ran.
Linda shouted after him.
“Ryan!””
He didn't stop.
I stood frozen in the middle of the room.
Daniel came to my side.
“You need to leave.””
I shook my head.
“Not yet.””
“Sarah.””
“I need to see this.””
A minute later, Ryan came back downstairs.
His face was pale.
In his hand was a small velvet jewelry box.
He opened it.
Inside was the diamond bracelet.
Linda started crying.
Ryan looked at her.
Then at me.
Then at the bracelet.
He had no words.
I did.
“Now you know.””
Ryan looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
I nodded.
“You should be.””
He stepped toward me.
I stepped away.
“Sarah…”
“No.””
He swallowed.
“Please.””
I shook my head.
“You didn't believe me when it mattered.””
Then I looked at Daniel.
“Take me home.””
As we walked toward the door, Ryan called after me.
“Sarah!””
I stopped.
I didn't turn.
His voice broke.
“There are still things you don't know.””
I closed my eyes.
Daniel looked at me.
I finally turned back.
Ryan was standing there holding the bracelet that had nearly destroyed our marriage.
“What things?””
Ryan looked toward his mother.
Then his father.
Then back at me.
“About why they wanted you gone.””
May you like
And for the first time that night, I realized the bracelet had never really been the problem.
It had only been the beginning.
