Chapter 5: The Father Who Was Supposed to Be Dead
For several seconds, nobody moved.
I stared at Emily.
Then at the photograph in my hand.
Then back at her.
“My father is dead.””
The words came out quietly.
I had said them so many times throughout my life that they had stopped feeling like words and started feeling like a fact carved into stone.
My father died when I was twelve.
That was the story I had been given.
A car accident.
A wet road.
A truck that crossed the center line.
One phone call in the middle of the night.
My mother had cried until she could barely speak.
I had watched a coffin disappear beneath the ground.
I remembered the black dress.
I remembered the rain.
I remembered holding my mother's hand.
Dead.
Gone.
Forever.
Emily looked at me with something that seemed almost like pity.
“That wasn't your father.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
“The man they buried wasn't him.””
My fingers tightened around the photograph.
“That’s impossible.””
Emily shook her head.
“No.””
I looked at Daniel.
He wasn't looking at me.
He was staring at the floor.
“Daniel.””
Nothing.
“Daniel, look at me.””
Slowly, he raised his eyes.
“Is she telling the truth?””
His silence answered before he did.
“Yes.””
My whole body went numb.
“You knew?””
“I knew there were questions.””
“You knew?””
“Sarah—”
“How long?””
Daniel swallowed.
“About a year.””
I stepped backward.
“You knew my father might be alive for a year and never told me?””
“I didn't know where he was.””
“But you knew he wasn't dead.””
“I suspected.””
Emily shook her head.
“You knew enough.””
Daniel turned toward her.
“You don't know everything.””
“I know more than you.””
Linda suddenly spoke from the staircase.
“This is ridiculous.””
Everyone turned.
She stood halfway down the stairs, her face pale again.
“You're all listening to a woman who disappeared for years.””
Emily's expression hardened.
“I disappeared because of you.””
Linda smiled coldly.
“You chose to leave.””
“No.””
Emily took a step toward her.
“You made me.””
I looked between them.
“What happened?””
Neither answered.
I raised my voice.
“What happened between you two?””
Emily looked at me.
“I was engaged to Ryan.””
My breath caught.
Linda closed her eyes.
I remembered what she'd said upstairs.
Ask your husband what happened to his first girlfriend.
I looked at Emily.
“When?””
“Five years before you met him.””
“And what happened?””
Emily glanced at Daniel.
Then at Linda.
Then back at me.
“I found documents.””
“What documents?””
“Financial transfers.””
My stomach tightened.
“From the trust?””
“Yes.””
“Like the ones Daniel showed me?””
“More than those.””
She reached inside her jacket.
“I took copies.””
Linda's face changed instantly.
“Emily.””
Emily ignored her.
She handed another envelope to me.
My hands shook as I opened it.
Inside were photocopies of bank statements.
Property records.
Emails.
Photographs.
And one document that made my breath stop.
A signature.
Richard Carter.
Below it was a second signature.
Linda Carter.
And beneath theirs was another name.
A name I recognized immediately.
My father's.
I stared at it.
“That’s his handwriting.””
Emily nodded.
“He signed one of the original trust agreements.””
I looked up.
“How could he?””
“Because he helped create it.””
The room spun.
“Why would my father have anything to do with Ryan's family?””
Emily's eyes met mine.
“That is the question I've been trying to answer.””
I turned to Daniel.
“What did my father do?””
Daniel finally spoke.
“He was Richard's financial partner.””
I couldn't breathe.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“They knew each other before Ryan was born.””
I looked at the photograph again.
My father stood next to Richard and Linda.
And Ryan.
A much younger Ryan.
Maybe six or seven years old.
They looked almost like a family.
Except my father stood slightly apart from them.
Like someone who had been invited into a world he didn't belong to.
“When was this taken?””
“Twenty-six years ago,” Emily said.
I shook my head.
“That doesn't make sense.””
“It does if your father didn't die when you thought he did.””
I looked at her.
“What happened to him?””
“He found out Richard and Linda were moving money.””
“Money from where?””
“From their investors.””
Daniel interrupted.
“Careful.””
Emily looked at him.
“Why? She deserves the truth.””
Daniel's voice became firm.
“Not without context.””
I turned toward him.
“Then give me the context.””
He took a slow breath.
“Richard's company was expanding rapidly.””
I nodded.
“I know.””
“Some of the expansion was funded through outside investors.””
“Okay.””
“Your father was responsible for portions of the accounting.””
“So he knew where the money went.””
“Yes.””
Emily spoke quietly.
“And he found something.””
“What?””
“Millions were being moved through shell companies.””
“By Linda?””
“By both of them.””
I stared at Linda.
She didn't deny it.
That frightened me.
“What did my father do?””
“He threatened to expose them,” Emily said.
Linda's eyes flashed.
“He was unstable.””
I looked at her.
“You knew him.””
“Of course I knew him.””
“You knew my father before he died.””
“Yes.””
“And you told everyone he was dead.””
Linda's mouth tightened.
“You were a child.””
“So you lied to me.””
“I protected you.””
“From what?””
“From him.””
I shook my head.
“You expect me to believe my father disappeared because he was dangerous?””
Linda's expression softened in a way that almost looked sincere.
“Your father was not the man you remember.””
“Then tell me who he was.””
“He was obsessed.””
“With what?””
“Money.””
I laughed bitterly.
“That sounds familiar.””
Linda flinched.
“He became convinced everyone was stealing from him.””
“Were they?””
She didn't answer.
I looked at Emily.
“What did my father discover?””
Emily pulled another paper from the envelope.
“This.””
I read it.
A list of transactions.
But one name appeared again and again.
A company called Westbridge Holdings.
“What's this?””
“It was a shell company.””
“Whose?””
Emily looked at Linda.
“Linda's.””
Linda shook her head.
“That's a lie.””
Daniel took the document from me.
He scanned it.
Then looked at Linda.
“It's not.””
Her face went pale.
“You don't have the full records.””
“We have enough.””
She stepped backward.
I noticed something then.
Linda wasn't afraid of Emily.
She was afraid of the documents.
Which meant the papers were real.
“Where is my father now?”” I asked.
Nobody answered.
I looked at Daniel.
“Where?””
He hesitated.
“I don't know.””
I turned toward Emily.
“You said Richard knows.””
“I believe he does.””
“Where?””
“I don't know.””
I looked toward Linda.
She said nothing.
I stepped closer.
“You know.””
Her eyes hardened.
“You have no idea what you're asking.””
“I don't care.””
“You should.””
“Where is my father?””
Linda stared at me for several seconds.
Then she whispered,
“Mexico.””
Everything stopped.
“Mexico?””
“He left.””
“Why?””
“He was being investigated.””
“By who?””
“The FBI.””
My chest tightened.
“For what?””
Linda looked away.
“Financial crimes.””
I stared at her.
“You're saying my father was a criminal?””
“No.””
The answer came from Daniel.
Linda turned toward him.
Daniel continued.
“He wasn't charged.””
“Why?””
“Because he disappeared before they could question him.””
I looked at Emily.
“You said he was alive.””
“He was.””
“When did you last see him?””
“Three years ago.””
My heart pounded.
“Where?””
“New Mexico.””
“Did you talk to him?””
“Yes.””
“What did he say?””
Emily hesitated.
“He said he was trying to find you.””
My eyes burned.
“Why?””
“He believed Linda was watching you.””
I looked at Linda.
Her expression was unreadable.
“What did she do?””
Emily's voice dropped.
“She tried to buy me off first.””
“For what?””
“To leave Ryan.””
“Did you?””
“I refused.””
“What happened?””
Emily looked toward the floor.
“Then she threatened me.””
“With what?””
“My younger brother.””
I froze.
“She knew where he lived.””
Linda scoffed.
“You're making this sound much more dramatic than it was.””
Emily turned on her.
“You ruined my family.””
“I never touched your brother.””
“You didn't have to.””
Her voice cracked.
“You made one phone call.””
Silence.
I looked at Linda.
“What phone call?””
Emily answered.
“To his employer.””
She swallowed.
“He lost his job.””
I stared at Linda.
“Why?””
“Because she wouldn't leave Ryan alone.””
“That wasn't your decision.””
“It was my son's.””
“No.””
Emily shook her head.
“Ryan wanted to marry me.””
Linda's face tightened.
I felt a strange twist in my stomach.
“Then why didn't he?””
Emily looked at me.
“Because his mother told him his father would cut him off.””
I looked toward Daniel.
“Is that true?””
“Yes.””
“So Ryan's first marriage—or relationship—ended because of money.””
“Yes.””
I swallowed.
“And then I came along.””
Daniel said nothing.
Linda did.
“You were different.””
“How?””
“You didn't know anything.””
I felt a chill.
“What does that mean?””
“You married him without knowing what his family was worth.””
I stared at her.
“And that's why you hated me?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“I was afraid.””
“Of me?””
“You were the first woman Ryan ever trusted without asking me first.””
My throat tightened.
“That isn't a crime.””
“No.””
Linda's voice became quieter.
“But it threatened everything.””
Suddenly, headlights appeared outside.
Everyone turned.
A black SUV had stopped across the street.
Daniel moved to the window.
“Don't go near it.””
I stayed where I was.
The SUV idled for several seconds.
Then the headlights switched off.
Emily whispered,
“They found us.””
“Who?”” I asked.
She looked terrified.
“The people who were looking for me.””
Daniel reached for his phone.
“Get down.””
“What?””
“Now.””
A sharp crack split the night.
The window beside us shattered.
I screamed.
Daniel grabbed me and pulled me to the floor.
Glass rained over the carpet.
Another crack.
Then another.
Someone outside shouted.
Emily crawled behind the couch.
Linda dropped to her knees.
For the first time, I saw genuine terror on her face.
Daniel pulled out his phone.
“Police.””
I looked at him.
“You said we didn't know who to trust.””
“We don't.””
He dialed anyway.
Another shot struck the wall.
I covered my head.
“Ryan!””
I suddenly remembered him.
He could still be somewhere nearby.
Daniel grabbed my arm.
“Stay down.””
“My husband—”
“We'll find him.””
“How?””
He looked at the shattered window.
“First we survive this.””
The shooting stopped.
Silence returned.
A few seconds later, the black SUV sped away.
Daniel stood slowly.
He checked the room.
“Everyone okay?””
Emily nodded.
Linda was shaking.
I looked around.
“Where's Richard?””
Nobody answered.
My heart dropped.
“He's gone.””
Daniel moved toward the front door.
He looked outside.
No one.
Then he noticed something on the floor.
A small envelope.
He picked it up.
His expression changed.
“What?””
He handed it to me.
My name was written across the front.
Sarah.
My hands trembled as I opened it.
Inside was a single photograph.
I unfolded it.
The image showed a man sitting at a small table.
Older.
Thinner.
But I knew that face.
My father's face.
My knees nearly gave out.
On the back, one sentence had been written.
HE'S ALIVE, AND HE KNOWS WHAT RYAN DID.
I stared at the words.
“What did Ryan do?””
Emily went pale.
Daniel looked toward the dark street.
Then his phone rang.
He answered.
His face changed.
“Where?””
A pause.
“No.””
He listened.
Then whispered,
“Are you sure?””
He ended the call.
I looked at him.
“What happened?””
Daniel's eyes met mine.
“They found a car.””
“Whose?””
“Ryan's.””
My heart stopped.
“Where?””
“Near the old quarry outside town.””
“Is he inside?””
Daniel's silence terrified me.
“There’s blood on the driver's seat.””
I couldn't breathe.
“Is he dead?””
“No one knows.””
I stood.
“We're going.””
Daniel grabbed his keys.
Emily stood too.
Linda suddenly shouted,
“You can't go there!””
We all turned.
I stared at her.
“Why?””
Linda's face was white.
“Because that's where your father disappeared.””
May you like
And suddenly, the mystery wasn't about where my father had been hiding.
It was about why the same place had now swallowed my husband.
