Chapter 3: What They Were Afraid I Would Find

The drive home felt longer than usual.

Daniel kept both hands on the steering wheel, his eyes fixed on the road outside Dallas.

I sat in the passenger seat with my arms folded tightly across my chest.

Neither of us spoke for several minutes.

My scalp still hurt.

My knees throbbed.

But none of that was what kept my thoughts racing.

It was Ryan's last sentence.

There are still things you don't know.

About why they wanted you gone.

I stared through the windshield.

“Tell me.””

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

“Tell me everything.””

He exhaled slowly.

“Are you sure?””

“No.””

I looked at him.

“But I'm done being kept in the dark.””

Daniel nodded.

“That’s fair.””

He changed lanes.

“Before I tell you, there’s something you need to understand.””

“What?””

“This wasn't supposed to happen today.””

I frowned.

“What wasn't?””

“The confrontation.””

“Your arrival?””

“No.””

He glanced at me.

“Linda was supposed to make you leave Ryan on her terms.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“What does that mean?””

“She thought she had more time.””

“For what?””

“To move money.””

The words sat between us.

I stared at him.

“How much?””

“That's not the biggest question.””

“What is?””

“Whose money.””

I swallowed.

“Ryan's?””

Daniel nodded.

“Some of it.””

“And the rest?””

He was quiet.

“Your father-in-law's.””

I turned toward him.

“Richard?””

“Yes.””

“What does Linda have to do with Richard's money?””

Daniel gave a humorless smile.

“Almost everything.””

He drove another mile before speaking again.

“Richard started a construction company thirty years ago.””

“I know.””

“Do you know how big it became?””

“Not really.””

“Seven states. Commercial development. Apartment complexes.

Land holdings. Private investments.””

I looked at him.

“That much?””

“He built an empire.””

I frowned.

“And Linda married him?””

“Years after he had already become successful.””

That detail caught my attention.

“Why does that matter?””

“Because Linda signed a prenuptial agreement.””

I looked out the window.

“Okay.””

“She didn't like it.””

I turned back.

“She couldn't touch most of Richard's separate assets if they divorced.””

“So?””

“So she started building her own financial structure.””

“Through Ryan?””

“Through Ryan.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“How?””

“Accounts. Property. Trust distributions.

Investments. Anything she could legally place under her control.””

“And Ryan knew?””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“That doesn't make sense.””

“It will.””

He turned onto a quiet road.

“Ryan's thirty-two now.””

“Yes.””

“His trust became partially accessible when he turned thirty.””

I remembered what Daniel had said at Linda's house.

“The trust.””

“Yes.””

“What happened when he turned thirty?””

“Linda convinced Richard to delay the transfer.””

“Why?””

“Because she claimed Ryan wasn't financially responsible enough.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Ryan manages a company.””

“Now.””

I looked at him.

“What changed?””

“Sarah, before you married him, Ryan trusted his mother completely.””

I went silent.

Daniel continued.

“He didn't question her financial advice.””

“And after I came along?””

“She couldn't control what he did anymore.””

I thought about all the arguments.

All the times Linda had insisted Ryan needed to discuss our finances with her.

All the times she had asked what was in our savings account.

All the times she had told him that marriage changed nothing about his obligations to his mother.

My fingers tightened.

“She wanted me gone.””

“Yes.””

“Because I knew she was controlling him?””

Daniel shook his head.

“Because she was afraid you would eventually notice the money.””

I stared at him.

“What money?””

“The money missing from the trust.””

My breath caught.

“How much?””

Daniel paused.

“Close to two million dollars.””

I couldn't speak.

Two million.

The number was too large to feel real.

“That's impossible.””

“I have the statements.””

“Ryan doesn't know?””

“No.””

“How could he not know?””

“Because Linda kept every account statement going to an address she controlled.””

I shook my head.

“And Richard?””

“Richard knew something was wrong.””

“Then why didn't he stop her?””

Daniel's expression changed.

“Because your father-in-law isn't innocent either.””

I turned toward him.

“What?””

“He signed off on the original arrangements.””

“Why?””

“He trusted his wife.””

I stared out the window again.

Everyone had trusted Linda.

Everyone except the man sitting beside me.

“Who are you, Daniel?””

He didn't answer right away.

“I'm an attorney.””

“I know that.””

“I've worked with Richard's company for nine years.””

“That doesn't explain why you were investigating Linda.””

Daniel's hands tightened around the steering wheel.

“Because Richard asked me to.””

I turned sharply.

“Richard?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“About eight months ago.””

“Why?””

“He found irregularities.””

“What kind?””

“Payments. Transfers. Properties that didn't match the books.””

I swallowed.

“And you thought Linda was responsible.””

“I knew she was.””

“Then why didn't you stop her?””

“Because I needed proof.””

“You had eight months.””

“I did.””

“And now?””

“I have enough.””

I watched him.

“Why did you wait until today?””

“I didn't.””

He reached into the center console and pulled out a folder.

He handed it to me.

“Open it.””

My fingers trembled as I opened the folder.

Inside were bank statements.

Transfer records.

Property documents.

Copies of emails.

And photographs.

At first, I didn't understand what I was looking at.

Then I saw my name.

My hands froze.

“Why is my name here?””

The first document was dated three months after my wedding.

A transfer.

Money moved from a trust account to a company I had never heard of.

I turned the page.

Another transfer.

Then another.

All of them had something in common.

A note beside each payment.

Sarah M.

I looked at Daniel.

“Why is my name attached to these?””

“It was part of the cover.””

“What cover?””

“Linda created fake financial records suggesting money was being moved for your benefit.””

My heart pounded.

“She was making it look like I stole money?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“So if the trust was ever audited, you would become the obvious suspect.””

I stared at the pages.

“But I never touched any of this.””

“I know.””

“How?””

“We traced the accounts.””

I turned another page.

There was a list of transaction dates.

Amounts.

Account numbers.

Recipients.

Then I saw something familiar.

An apartment complex.

The name meant nothing to me.

But the address did.

My stomach dropped.

“That’s Ryan's mother's old investment property.””

Daniel nodded.

“When did she buy it?””

“Two years before your wedding.””

“So why is it on these records?””

“Because she transferred it using money from the trust.””

I stared at him.

“She stole it.””

“Yes.””

“And blamed me.””

“Yes.””

I closed the folder.

“I need to tell Ryan.””

Daniel shook his head.

“Not yet.””

“Why?””

“Because Ryan isn't the only person who doesn't know the truth.””

“Who else?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Linda doesn't know how much we know.””

A chill ran through me.

“What does that mean?””

“It means she's going to make another move.””

“When?””

“Soon.””

“How soon?””

“Tonight.””

My heart began racing.

“What are you talking about?””

Daniel's phone rang.

He glanced at the screen.

His expression changed.

“Who is it?””

He didn't answer.

The phone rang again.

He pulled over.

“Daniel?””

He answered.

“Yeah?””

He listened.

His jaw tightened.

“Did he leave?””

A pause.

“Where?””

Another pause.

“Okay. Don't contact anyone else. I'll handle it.””

He ended the call.

I stared at him.

“What happened?””

“Ryan left the house.””

“That’s good.””

“No.””

Daniel looked at me.

“He took the bracelet.””

“Why would he?””

“Because he thinks it can prove something.””

“What?””

“That Linda planted it.””

I looked at him.

“Did she?””

“Yes.””

“Then what's wrong?””

Daniel's expression was grim.

“He wasn't supposed to confront her alone.””

My heart dropped.

“What do you mean?””

“Linda knows Ryan found the bracelet.””

“And?””

“And she knows the recordings exist.””

I immediately reached for my phone.

“I need to call him.””

Daniel grabbed my wrist gently.

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because Linda will know you're involved.””

“I don't care.””

“I do.””

He looked directly at me.

“Sarah, listen carefully.””

I had never heard him speak with that much urgency.

“If Linda realizes you're working with us, she won't try to destroy your marriage anymore.””

“What will she do?””

“She'll try to destroy you.””

My throat tightened.

“She already did.””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“Today was humiliation.””

He paused.

“I'm talking about something much worse.””

My phone suddenly buzzed.

I looked down.

Ryan.

Calling.

I answered immediately.

“Ryan?””

Nothing.

“Ryan?””

I heard breathing.

Then his voice.

“Sarah.””

I stood in the car.

“Where are you?””

“I need you to listen.””

“Are you okay?””

“No.””

My heart stopped.

“What happened?””

“I went back upstairs.””

“To your mother's house?””

“Yes.””

“And?””

“I found something.””

“What?””

“Her safe wasn't where my father said it was.””

I frowned.

“What do you mean?””

“There was a second compartment.””

My stomach tightened.

“What was inside?””

Ryan's voice dropped.

“Documents.””

“What documents?””

“Documents with your name.””

I closed my eyes.

Daniel looked at me.

“Ryan,” I said carefully, “leave the house.””

“I'm trying.””

“Where's your mother?””

Silence.

“Ryan?””

“She isn't here.””

“What?””

“I don't know where she went.””

I looked at Daniel.

He shook his head.

“Get out of the house,” I said.

“I am.””

“Now.””

Then I heard a sound in the background.

A door slamming.

Ryan gasped.

“Someone's here.””

I froze.

“Ryan?””

His breathing became faster.

“Sarah…”

“Where are you?””

“Upstairs.””

“Lock the door.””

“I can't.””

“Why?””

“I don't have time.””

Daniel took the phone from my hand.

“Ryan, this is Daniel.””

“What?””

“Listen to me. Don't confront anyone.””

A pause.

Then Ryan said,

“Daniel, you were right.””

“About what?””

“My mother wasn't working alone.””

Daniel's face changed.

“Who is with her?””

Ryan whispered,

“Dad.””

Everything inside me went still.

Richard.

Ryan's father.

The quiet man who had stood in the living room and watched me being dragged across the floor.

The same man who had looked uncomfortable.

The same man who had seemed powerless.

I felt a cold wave move through me.

“Ryan,” Daniel said, “get out now.””

“I can't.””

“Why?””

Another silence.

Then Ryan said the words that made my blood turn cold.

“They locked me in the room.””

The call went dead.

I stared at the phone.

“Ryan?””

No answer.

“Ryan!””

Nothing.

I looked at Daniel.

“What do we do?””

He started the engine.

“We go back.””

“Back to Linda's?””

“Yes.””

“But you said—”

“I know.””

He accelerated onto the highway.

I held onto the door.

“Daniel.””

He looked at me.

“What?””

“What if Richard really is involved?””

Daniel stared straight ahead.

“Then we have a much bigger problem than I thought.””

I looked down at the folder in my lap.

A photograph slipped from between the papers.

I picked it up.

It was a picture of me.

Standing outside my house.

Taken from across the street.

My blood ran cold.

On the back, someone had written three words.

SHE KNOWS TOO MUCH.

I turned the photograph over.

Daniel saw it.

His face went completely pale.

“Sarah…”

“What?””

He stared at the photograph.

“That wasn't supposed to be in the file.””

“Why?””

“Because I never gave that picture to anyone.””

I looked at him.

“What are you saying?””

He reached for the photograph.

“I’m saying somebody else has been watching you.””

And suddenly, the darkness beyond the car windows didn't feel empty anymore.

May you like

It felt occupied.

As if somewhere out there, someone was waiting for us to arrive too late.
