Chapter 6: The File With My Name On It

The meeting with Vanessa was scheduled for nine the following morning.

I barely slept.

Every time I closed my eyes, I heard Grayson's voice.

There's a reason I married you.

It was the sentence that changed everything.

Not because it surprised me.

But because, for the first time, he had stopped pretending.

At 8:15, my father drove me to the meeting.

Eleanor had advised us not to bring any documents that could compromise the ongoing investigation. Daniel had agreed to provide copies of the records and explain how he obtained them.

The office was on the second floor of an old commercial building.

The hallway smelled of dust and fresh paint.

Daniel was waiting outside a small meeting room.

He looked older than his photograph, with grey hair around his temples and a deep crease between his eyebrows.

“Mrs. Whitmore,” he said.

“Claire, please.””

He shook my hand.

Then he looked at my father.

“Mr. Bennett. It's been a long time.””

My father studied him.

“Daniel Reeves.””

“Yes, sir.””

“I remember you.””

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“I wish I had spoken sooner.””

“Then let's make sure you speak clearly now.””

Daniel opened the meeting room door.

A woman was sitting beside the window.

She wore a dark green coat and had her hair tied back.

When she saw me, she stood.

“Claire?””

I nodded.

“Vanessa?””

She gave a small, tired smile.

“I suppose we have a lot to discuss.””

We sat down.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa placed a photograph on the table.

It showed her standing beside Grayson at what looked like a restaurant.

He was holding her hand.

They looked happy.

Very happy.

“I was engaged to him for eleven months,” she said.

“I thought he was the most honest man I'd ever met.””

I looked at the photograph.

“What happened?””

“He convinced me that marriage required financial transparency. He said he wanted us to build a future together.””

She opened her handbag and took out a folder.

“He asked me to transfer my inherited townhouse into a company structure. He said it would protect the property if either of us faced financial difficulties.””

“Did you?””

“Yes.””

“And then?””

“Three weeks later, he told me he wasn't ready to get married.””

Her fingers trembled slightly.

“I asked him to reverse the transfer. He refused.””

Daniel placed another document on the table.

“The company was controlled by a trust connected to Lorna.””

I read the name.

The Whitmore Family Asset Trust.

Vanessa continued.

“I spent months trying to get my property back. Grayson insisted everything had been legal. His mother told everyone I was unstable.””

I looked at her.

“Did you ever discover why he wanted the townhouse?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Because it was close to a redevelopment project. Its value had tripled within a year.””

I stared at her.

“So he planned to take your property and profit from it?””

“That's what I believe.””

She turned another page.

“And when I refused to stay quiet, something else happened.””

“What?””

“My father lost his job.””

My heart sank.

“Was he connected to Whitmore Aerospace?””

Vanessa nodded.

“He was a senior procurement officer at a company that supplied components to them. After I complained, an anonymous report accused him of leaking confidential information.””

My father leaned forward.

“Was the accusation investigated?””

“Yes. It was eventually dismissed, but his reputation was damaged. He never recovered professionally.””

My father exchanged a look with Daniel.

“Did Grayson have access to your father's employment records?””

Vanessa nodded.

“He knew everything about my family.””

I thought about the questions Grayson had asked about my father.

His interest in my work.

His curiosity about our family history.

The way he had encouraged me to bring Dad to dinners.

I suddenly felt cold.

“Why me?”” I whispered.

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

He nodded.

Daniel opened a thick folder and removed several printed pages.

“This is the internal due-diligence file I mentioned.””

My name appeared at the top.

*CLAIRE BENNETT — POTENTIAL FAMILY CONNECTION.*

Underneath was a list of details.

My education.

My employment history.

My grandmother's property.

My father's company position.

Even the names of two people I had worked with.

I stared at the page.

“Where did they get all this?””

“Some information came from public records,” Daniel explained.

“Other details were gathered through private inquiries.””

My father picked up the next sheet.

His expression became darker with every line.

“Who prepared this?””

Daniel pointed to the bottom.

A name was printed beside the approval signature.

*LORNA WHITMORE.*

Vanessa leaned toward me.

“Claire, there's something else. I don't think Grayson met you by chance.””

I looked up.

“What do you mean?””

“Six months before you met him, I overheard him speaking to his mother. He was discussing your father.””

My mouth went dry.

“What did he say?””

Vanessa closed her eyes briefly.

“He said your father was the one person who could help them regain access to a contract they'd lost years earlier.””

My father stood.

“That's enough.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Sir?””

“I want to know whether this file contains any references to my daughter's marriage.””

Daniel turned to the final section.

There was a separate page.

It contained a series of dates.

The first date was the day Grayson had approached me at a charity event.

The second was the day he invited me to dinner.

The third was the date he introduced me to Lorna.

Then came the date of our engagement.

And finally, the date of our wedding.

Beside each date were short handwritten notes.

*Initial contact successful.*

*Family relationship established.*

*Target receptive to long-term commitment.*

*Marriage secured.*

I felt as though someone had struck me.

“Target?””

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“That's what they called me, too.””

My father picked up the page.

He read the last handwritten note.

Then he looked at Daniel.

“What does this mean?””

Daniel hesitated.

“It's the reason I contacted Claire.””

He placed another document on the table.

It was a confidential memorandum dated two months before my engagement.

The subject line read:

*BENNETT FAMILY ACCESS STRATEGY — PHASE TWO.*

My father went completely still.

“Where did you get this?””

“From the company's archived correspondence.””

“Who wrote it?””

Daniel pointed to the bottom of the page.

There were two signatures.

One belonged to Lorna.

The other belonged to Grayson.

I read the final paragraph.

Then I read it again.

It said that marriage to Claire Bennett could establish a permanent personal connection with the Bennett family, potentially creating opportunities for future business cooperation.

But the next sentence was worse.

*If direct access to the father proves unsuccessful, the marriage should still be maintained until the property acquisition and associated financial objectives are completed.*

I pushed the paper away.

“So my marriage was a business strategy.””

Nobody answered.

My father walked toward the window.

His hands were clenched.

For a moment, he looked less like the calm man who had raised me and more like someone remembering a battle he had thought was over.

Then Vanessa reached into her handbag.

“I kept one final document,” she said.

She placed a small USB drive on the table.

“It's a recording.””

Daniel looked surprised.

“Vanessa, I thought you deleted that.””

“I kept a backup.””

She turned toward me.

“It's Grayson speaking to his mother the night before he ended our engagement.””

I stared at the USB drive.

“What does he say?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“He tells her what happened when I refused to sign the last document.””

My father asked quietly:

“Is there anything about the Bennett family?””

Vanessa nodded.

“That's why I kept it.””

Daniel connected the USB drive to his laptop.

A recording opened.

There was a burst of static.

Then Lorna's voice.

“Your father will never cooperate with us after what happened.””

Grayson answered.

“Then I'll find another way.””

“What if she refuses?””

“She won't.””

“How can you be so sure?””

His voice became almost amused.

“Because I already know exactly what kind of woman she is.””

I stopped breathing.

Then came the sentence that made Vanessa cover her mouth.

Grayson said:

“Once I find the right girl, her father will give me everything without realizing he's doing it.””

My father slowly turned away from the window.

The recording continued.

Lorna asked:

“And if the girl discovers the truth?””

Grayson laughed.

“By then, Mum, she'll have signed everything.””

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message from Grayson.

*I know you've met Vanessa. Bring her to the Whitmore house tonight. There's something she needs to return.*

A second message followed.

*And Claire, ask your father why he never told you what happened to your grandfather's estate.*

I looked at my father.

His face had gone pale.

“Dad?””

He didn't answer.

I reached for his hand.

“What happened to Grandfather's estate?””

My father closed his eyes.

May you like

Then he whispered:

“That's the one thing I hoped you'd never have to know.””
