Chapter 10: The Key Edward Whitmore Never Returned
“Your grandfather gave Edward Whitmore the second key?””
I stared at my father.
He nodded slowly.
“Not willingly. Edward convinced him that he needed temporary access to inspect a technical component. Your grandfather trusted him enough to hand over the key.””
“And he never got it back?””
“He asked for it several times. Edward always claimed he had misplaced it.””
I looked at the photograph again.
My grandfather was smiling in it.
He looked younger, healthier, and completely unaware that the people he trusted would eventually turn his life's work into a weapon against his family.
“Why didn't you tell me this before?””
“Because I thought the second key had been destroyed.””
“Why?””
“Edward died before your wedding. I assumed whatever he had taken was gone with him.””
Dad sat down heavily.
“Apparently, I was wrong.””
Eleanor arrived twenty minutes later.
She examined the photograph, the envelope, and the documents recovered from the storage room.
“Someone knows about the second key,” she said.
“And they're deliberately trying to make us suspicious of the Whitmores.””
“Who else would know?”” I asked.
“Someone with access to the old family records.””
Daniel entered behind her.
He had been speaking to the security officers downstairs.
“I may have an answer.””
Dad turned.
“What did you find?””
Daniel placed his laptop on the desk.
“Before Edward died, Whitmore Aerospace transferred several archived assets into a private storage facility. The transaction was recorded under a subsidiary company.””
He opened a spreadsheet.
One entry was highlighted.
*ARCHIVE STORAGE UNIT 47 — LEGACY TECHNICAL MATERIALS.*
My father leaned forward.
“Where is this facility?””
“An industrial estate outside the city.””
Eleanor studied the record.
“Who currently controls the subsidiary?””
Daniel clicked another tab.
A name appeared.
Lorna Whitmore.
I felt my stomach tighten.
“So she has the second key?””
“Possibly,” Daniel said.
“Or she has whatever Edward stored there.””
Dad shook his head.
“Then we need to secure the archive before she can move anything.””
Eleanor raised a hand.
“Not so quickly. We cannot simply enter a private storage facility. We'll need to establish the ownership of the contents and obtain the appropriate legal authority.””
My phone vibrated.
A message from Grayson.
*I know you've found the box. You should stop digging before your father loses everything he built.*
A second message followed.
*Mum wants to make a deal. Come alone tonight.*
I showed Eleanor.
She read it and handed the phone back.
“Do not go anywhere alone.””
Dad looked at me.
“Claire, this is becoming dangerous.””
I glanced at the letter from Grandfather.
Never give someone the key to your future simply because they promise to love you.
“No,” I said.
“It's becoming clear.””
At 3:20 that afternoon, we received another call.
This time, it was from Susan Miller.
“Mr. Bennett, I need to tell you something urgently.””
Dad put the phone on speaker.
“What happened?””
“The Whitmore board has called an emergency meeting. Mrs. Whitmore has submitted a proposal to transfer certain legacy assets into a newly established holding company.””
“What assets?”” Eleanor asked.
“The assets associated with the Bennett technology agreement.””
Dad stood.
“She has no authority to do that.””
“I know. But she's claiming that Edward secured the rights through a separate agreement before his death.””
“Send us the paperwork.””
“I will. But there's something else.””
Susan hesitated.
“Mr. Whitmore has been telling senior executives that Claire has agreed to cooperate with the transfer.””
I laughed in disbelief.
“I'm sitting right here. I haven't agreed to anything.””
“I know, Mrs. Bennett. But they've circulated a copy of what appears to be your signed authorization.””
Eleanor's expression hardened.
“Send us that document immediately.””
After the call, she examined the incoming file.
The signature was mine.
The date was three weeks earlier.
But there was something strange about the document.
It included a paragraph authorizing Lorna to negotiate on behalf of the Bennett family trust.
I had never seen it.
“That's forged,” I said.
Eleanor nodded.
“Most likely. We'll need an independent examination.””
My father picked up his phone.
“I'm calling the trust administrator.””
He stepped into the corridor.
Daniel leaned toward me.
“Claire, there's something I haven't told you.””
I turned.
“What?””
“When I worked for Whitmore Aerospace, I discovered that Edward had kept a private ledger separate from the company's accounts.””
“What was in it?””
“Payments to people who helped him obtain confidential information.””
My throat tightened.
“Was Grayson in it?””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“Yes.””
“How much?””
“Not money. There were references to a series of favors and introductions.””
He opened a file.
One entry caught my attention.
*BENNETT FAMILY — PERSONAL ACCESS REQUIRED.*
Beside it was a date.
The day Grayson had first spoken to me at the charity event.
I stared at the screen.
“He was already looking for me.””
Daniel nodded.
“I'm afraid so.””
At 7:00 that evening, I received a call from Lorna.
I answered because Eleanor wanted every communication preserved.
“Claire,” Lorna said sweetly.
“I hope you've had time to calm down.””
“I'm perfectly calm.””
“Good. Then perhaps we can finally behave like adults.””
“What do you want?””
“To discuss a settlement.””
I waited.
“We'll arrange for the apartment to remain in your name. Grayson will withdraw any property claims, and we'll compensate you for the inconvenience.””
I almost laughed.
“And what do you want in return?””
“The archive.””
“No.””
Her voice sharpened.
“You haven't even heard the offer.””
“I don't need to.””
“Claire, you are making a very serious mistake. Your grandfather's invention belongs to the Whitmore family under the original agreement.””
“Then why are you asking me to sign anything?””
Silence.
I continued.
“Why did you forge my signature?””
“We did no such thing.””
“Why did Grayson tell you he would use my marriage to obtain the inheritance?””
Her voice dropped.
“Be careful what you accuse people of.””
“I'm being careful. That's why I'm recording this conversation.””
Lorna laughed.
“You really are your father's daughter.””
“Thank you.””
“You think being clever makes you powerful. It doesn't. Power comes from knowing who to trust.””
I looked toward my father, who had just returned to the room.
“Then perhaps you should have chosen better people to trust.””
Lorna's breathing changed.
“Listen to me, Claire. Edward made a mistake when he trusted your grandfather. I won't make the same mistake.””
The call ended.
I lowered my phone.
Dad looked at me.
“What did she say?””
“She wants the archive.””
He nodded.
“Then we know what they're after.””
Eleanor's laptop chimed.
An email had arrived from Susan.
Attached was a document titled:
*EDWARD WHITMORE — PRIVATE ASSET TRANSFER RECORD.*
Dad opened it.
The first page listed the storage facility.
The second page contained a description of the contents.
And the third page revealed something unexpected.
There was a note indicating that the second key had not been stored with the archive.
It had been transferred to an individual named *MARGARET WHITMORE*.
I stared at the name.
“Who is Margaret Whitmore?””
Dad looked up.
“Edward's younger sister.””
Daniel shook his head.
“She's been dead for twelve years.””
Eleanor examined the transfer date.
“Not according to this document.””
The record was dated six months ago.
I looked at my father.
“Someone has been using a dead woman's identity?””
He didn't answer.
Then my phone rang again.
An unfamiliar female voice spoke.
“Claire Bennett?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Margaret Whitmore.””
I gripped the phone.
“That's impossible.””
The woman laughed softly.
“Not as impossible as your husband wants you to believe.””
May you like
Then she said:
“If you want to know who really stole your grandfather's invention, meet me tomorrow. And don't bring your father.””
