Chapter 16: Margaret's Confession
Nobody moved.
Margaret stood at the bottom of the staircase, her hands clasped in front of her, looking at the document in my hand.
The underground room suddenly felt too small.
“You helped Edward steal my grandfather's invention?”” I asked.
Margaret nodded.
“Yes.””
My father stepped between us.
“Stay where you are.””
She didn't resist.
“I expected you to hate me, Richard.””
“You have no idea what I feel.””
“I know exactly what you feel. I have spent twenty years feeling it myself.””
Dad pointed toward the stairs.
“Then start explaining.””
Margaret looked at the black folder.
“Edward didn't begin as a thief. He began as Arthur's business partner. They were both ambitious, both brilliant, and both convinced they deserved more recognition than the other.””
“My grandfather trusted him,” I said.
“He did. And Edward took advantage of it.””
Margaret walked toward the steel safe but stopped before touching it.
“I was Edward's younger sister. I worked in the company's legal department. When Arthur refused to sell the licensing rights, Edward asked me to prepare a temporary transfer agreement.””
“Temporary?”” Mum repeated.
“That was what he told me. He said the agreement would protect the company during a financial dispute. He promised the rights would be returned once the dispute was resolved.””
I looked at the signature.
“And you signed it.””
“Yes.””
“Did you know what he was planning?””
Margaret lowered her eyes.
“Not at first.””
My father gave a bitter laugh.
“Convenient.””
Margaret accepted the accusation without protest.
“When I discovered what Edward had done, the agreement had already been used to redirect licensing payments. Arthur confronted me. He showed me the altered records and demanded that I testify.””
“Why didn't you?””
“Because Edward threatened my daughter.””
The room fell silent.
I stared at her.
“You have a daughter?””
Margaret nodded.
“Her name is Sophie. Edward told me he could destroy her life. He had arranged false accusations against her husband and threatened to make sure she lost custody of her child.””
Mum shook her head.
“Edward was capable of that.””
“I know. But that doesn't excuse what I did.””
Margaret looked at me.
“I kept quiet. I let Arthur believe I had chosen my brother over him. Then, when Edward's financial scheme began to collapse, I helped Arthur hide the original documents.””
Dad frowned.
“You helped hide them?””
“Yes. The first archive was moved before Edward could seize it. Arthur separated the technical designs from the legal ownership records. He gave me one key and placed the other with the family trustees.””
I looked at the two keyholes.
“So you weren't protecting Edward's property.””
“No. I was protecting the evidence of what he'd stolen.””
“Then why did you tell us you were the person who helped him?””
“Because I was.””
Her answer was quiet.
“And because you deserve to know that the person who helped save your family's inheritance also helped put it in danger.””
Dad turned away.
“Where were you when Edward supposedly died?””
Margaret's expression changed.
“I was there.””
Mum stepped forward.
“What?””
“I saw him leave the country. I helped arrange the false death record.””
Dad stared at her.
“Why?””
“Because he had discovered that Arthur was preparing to expose the entire operation. Edward wanted to disappear before the authorities could question him.””
“And you helped him?””
“I thought I could control what happened next. I believed that if Edward vanished, the threats against my daughter would stop.””
She shook her head.
“I was wrong. He continued operating through Lorna. He continued using the company. And eventually he began looking for the original archive again.””
I thought about the photograph outside Margaret's house.
Lorna had known she was alive.
“She came to you for the key,” I said.
Margaret nodded.
“She offered me money. Then she threatened Sophie. She said Edward was alive and wanted everything restored to him.””
“Why didn't you tell us?””
“Because I was afraid she would find Sophie.””
I stared at her.
“You let us believe you were dead.””
“I know.””
“And you let us believe you were helping us.””
Margaret looked at me with tired eyes.
“I was trying to help you. But I was also trying to protect the people I love. I have made selfish decisions for a very long time.””
My father picked up the legal document.
“There's something missing. You said you helped Edward steal the invention, but the agreement lists you as the approving officer. It doesn't say you transferred the rights back.””
Margaret nodded.
“Because I never did.””
She pointed toward a small compartment inside the safe.
“Arthur placed the restoration agreement there. It was signed before he died. It reverses the fraudulent transfer and confirms the original licensing rights belong to the Bennett family trust.””
I reached inside.
There was a sealed document.
The paper was old, but the signatures were clear.
Arthur Bennett.
Margaret Whitmore.
And a third signature.
Edward Whitmore.
My breath caught.
“He signed this?””
“He did. He was forced to acknowledge the original ownership after Arthur discovered the false accounts. But Edward never intended to honor it.””
Dad examined the date.
“This was signed three months before the company investigation.””
Margaret nodded.
“He thought he could get the agreement invalidated later. Arthur knew that, so he arranged for the document to be witnessed and registered through an independent legal office.””
Eleanor would need to examine it, but the implications were enormous.
The document could prove that the Whitmores had known the truth all along.
Then Margaret looked at me.
“There's one more thing.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“What?””
“Your grandfather didn't leave the archive to you simply because you were his granddaughter.””
She pointed toward the black folder.
“He left you the final authority because he believed you would be the only person in the family who could make a decision without being tempted by the money.””
I looked at the shelves.
“What decision?””
Margaret opened the folder to the final page.
A handwritten instruction was attached.
The original technology could not be licensed, sold, or transferred until the family trustees established that all previous claims had been investigated and all affected parties had been given an opportunity to respond.
It also required the beneficiary to decide whether the invention should remain within the family trust or be released under a new independent structure.
My grandfather hadn't just hidden a fortune.
He had left me responsibility for deciding what happened to it.
Eleanor arrived with two officers and carefully examined the documents.
She photographed each page and arranged for the original materials to be secured.
Margaret gave a formal statement.
Before leaving, she asked to speak to me alone.
“I know you don't trust me,” she said.
“I don't.””
She nodded.
“That's fair.””
“Did you know about Grayson and me from the beginning?””
“No. I learned about the marriage strategy after Lorna approached me. She said the family had finally found a way to obtain the archive.””
“Did she tell you Grayson was involved?””
“She said he had been prepared for the role.””
I felt sick.
Margaret continued.
“But there is something else. Lorna wasn't acting alone. She had been receiving instructions from Edward.””
“From where?””
Margaret hesitated.
“Through a private company. The same company that owns the property where he was hiding.””
I remembered the notebook.
The false identity.
The overseas trust.
“Can we prove it?””
“Not with what I have.””
She reached into her coat and removed a small photograph.
It showed Edward standing beside a woman outside a hotel.
I recognized the woman immediately.
My mother.
But the photograph was dated three years before I met Grayson.
I stared at it.
“Why was Mum with him?””
Margaret shook her head.
“I don't know.””
I turned the photograph over.
There was a handwritten message.
