Chapter 3: The Woman Before Me
I didn't drive home immediately.
Instead, I sat in my car outside Lorna's mansion, staring at the messages.
The man called Daniel Reeves had sent me a phone number and an address.
I called him.
He answered almost immediately.
“Mrs. Whitmore?””
“Who are you?””
“My name is Daniel. I worked in financial administration for Whitmore Aerospace for eleven years.””
“Why are you contacting me?””
“Because I saw your wedding announcement yesterday.””
I gripped the steering wheel.
“And?””
“And I recognized your name. I also recognized the apartment address.””
My mouth went dry.
“What does that have to do with Grayson's previous fiancée?””
Daniel lowered his voice.
“Her name was Vanessa Cole. She was engaged to Grayson six years ago.””
I remembered Grayson mentioning Vanessa once.
He had described her as unstable.
A woman who had become obsessed with money and eventually tried to destroy his family.
“What happened to her?””
“She inherited a townhouse from her aunt. Grayson convinced her to transfer it into a company structure before their wedding.””
“And?””
“She signed the documents. Two months later, the engagement ended. The townhouse was sold. She received almost nothing.””
I closed my eyes.
“Was it legal?””
“That's what she spent the next two years trying to prove.””
A car passed in front of me.
I watched its red taillights disappear around the corner.
“Why didn't she go to the police?””
“She did. But the documents she signed gave the company enough authority to defend the transfer. She couldn't afford a prolonged legal fight.””
I felt sick.
“Where is she now?””
“I don't know. But I kept copies of some internal correspondence.””
“Why?””
“Because I knew what they were doing was wrong.””
I took a breath.
“Can we meet?””
“Tomorrow morning. There's something else you should see.””
That evening, Grayson came home at 8:15.
I was sitting on the sofa in our coastal apartment.
The windows were open. The sound of waves drifted through the room.
A box of wedding gifts sat beside the dining table.
He loosened his tie and placed his keys in the bowl near the entrance.
“Still upset?””
I didn't answer.
He walked into the kitchen.
“I'm ordering dinner. Do you want anything?””
“No.””
He opened the refrigerator.
“Claire, this silent treatment is childish.””
I watched him take out a bottle of sparkling water.
“Did you have another fiancée named Vanessa?””
His hand stopped.
The refrigerator door remained open.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then he closed it.
“Where did you hear that name?””
“Does it matter?””
He laughed.
“Vanessa was a mistake.””
“What happened to her townhouse?””
His expression hardened.
“Why are you asking me about someone from six years ago?””
“Because someone contacted me.””
He placed the bottle on the counter.
“Who?””
“Daniel Reeves.””
The color drained from his face.
It was subtle, but I saw it.
“Daniel?””
“Yes.””
He walked toward me.
“Listen to me very carefully. Daniel was dismissed from the company for misconduct. He's a bitter man. He steals confidential information and invents stories about people who are more successful than him.””
“Did he lie about Vanessa?””
Grayson rubbed his jaw.
“Vanessa was financially irresponsible. I helped her protect her assets. She later accused me of stealing from her because she couldn't accept that our relationship was over.””
“Did she lose her townhouse?””
“She made bad decisions.””
“Did you profit from them?””
He stared at me.
Then he laughed.
“God, Claire. Is this what marriage is going to be like? Every conversation becomes an interrogation?””
I stood.
“Just answer the question.””
He stepped closer.
“You're letting strangers poison your mind.””
“I heard you talking to your mother last night.””
His face changed completely.
The silence that followed was so sudden that I could hear the refrigerator humming.
“What?””
“Under the bed. In the bridal suite.””
He didn't move.
I continued.
“I heard you explain exactly how you intended to take the apartment from me after a few months.””
His mouth opened.
Then closed.
“You recorded that?””
I nodded.
His eyes moved toward my handbag.
“Where is it?””
“Somewhere safe.””
He took another step.
“Claire, give me your phone.””
“No.””
“Don't be stupid.””
I looked at him.
“You told your mother I was easy to manage.””
He ran a hand through his hair.
“That's not what you think.””
“I heard every word.””
“You don't understand the context.””
“Then explain it.””
He paced toward the window.
“Mother was worried about the property. She has been through a lot. She wanted reassurance.””
“By planning to take my apartment?””
“It's our property!””
“Then why did you tell her you intended to keep every receipt so you could take it from me?””
He turned.
“Because you don't understand how complicated financial arrangements can become during a divorce!””
I stared at him.
There it was.
He had just admitted that he had already been planning our divorce.
Before we had even spent one night together.
I reached for my handbag.
“I'm going to speak to a lawyer tomorrow.””
He moved quickly.
He grabbed the bag.
“Don't.””
I held on.
“Let go.””
“Claire, listen to me. You're making a terrible mistake.””
I pulled the bag away.
His voice dropped.
“You have no idea what my family can do.””
I looked at him.
“Is that a threat?””
He said nothing.
Then he stepped back and straightened his shirt.
“Fine. Go speak to your lawyer. But don't expect me to sit around while you destroy this marriage.””
He walked upstairs.
A few seconds later, I heard the bedroom door slam.
I stood alone in the living room.
My hands were shaking.
But I didn't cry.
Instead, I opened my phone and checked the recording from the previous night.
It was still there.
Every word.
Every laugh.
Every mention of the apartment.
I copied the file to a secure account and sent another copy to my father's private email.
Then I called Daniel.
“I'm meeting you tomorrow,” I said.
“Good,” he replied.
“Bring the original recording if you can.””
“Why?””
“Because I think I know why Grayson chose you.””
I frowned.
“What do you mean?””
Daniel hesitated.
“Your apartment isn't the only thing he's interested in.””
“What else could he possibly want?””
“Your family.””
My stomach tightened.
“What about my family?””
“Your father worked on a classified aerospace project years ago, didn't he?””
I felt the room tilt.
“Yes. He's an engineer.””
“Claire, your father isn't just an engineer. He's the chief architect behind one of the most valuable defense systems developed by his company.””
I gripped the edge of the table.
“How do you know that?””
“Because Whitmore Aerospace once tried to secure a contract connected to that project. They failed. And from what I saw in the old company records, your husband has been trying to get close to your father for years.””
I couldn't breathe properly.
Grayson had always been interested in my family.
He had asked about my father's work at dinner.
He had offered to help him with business contacts.
He had even suggested inviting him to the wedding rehearsal dinner.
I had thought it was kindness.
Now every memory looked different.
Daniel spoke again.
“There's one more thing, Claire.””
“What?””
“Vanessa didn't disappear because she lost her money.””
I waited.
“She discovered something about Grayson's father. Something that could have destroyed the entire Whitmore family.””
My phone vibrated.
A new message appeared.
It was from Grayson.
*Come downstairs. We need to talk.*
I looked toward the staircase.
Then another message arrived.
*And Claire, bring your phone. Mum wants to hear the recording.*
I stared at the screen.
How did he know I had already told Daniel?
Before I could answer, I heard the front door unlock.
Lorna's voice floated into the apartment.
“Where is she, Grayson?””
Then came his reply.
“Upstairs. And this time, Mum, we're not asking nicely.””
I slowly slipped my phone into my pocket.
Because suddenly, I understood something.
May you like
They weren't afraid of losing the apartment.
They were afraid of what I might discover next.
