Chapter 6: The Property I Never Bought
Dana arranged a conference call with Daniel the following morning.
She insisted that he communicate through her office.
I agreed.
At 8:30 a.m., I sat in a small meeting room on base with my laptop open and a notebook beside me.
Dana appeared on the screen.
Daniel joined two minutes later.
He looked terrible.
His hair was uncombed, his shirt collar was wrinkled, and the dark circles beneath his eyes suggested he hadn't slept.
"Charlotte," he said.
I didn't greet him.
"Tell me what Richard bought.""
Daniel looked toward Dana.
She nodded.
"Answer the question.""
Daniel swallowed.
"A commercial property in North Carolina.""
I frowned.
"Where?""
"Outside Raleigh.""
"What does that have to do with me?""
He rubbed his forehead.
"Richard bought it through a company called Whitmore Property Holdings.""
I opened my notebook.
"Your company?""
"Originally, yes. But he arranged for the ownership structure to change.""
"To what?""
Daniel hesitated.
"An entity with your name on it.""
For several seconds, I didn't understand.
Then I spoke.
"What do you mean, an entity with my name?""
"A limited liability company. Charlotte Mercer Holdings.""
I stared at him.
"My name is Charlotte Bennett.""
Daniel's face changed.
"I know.""
"Then why would there be a company registered under Charlotte Mercer?""
He looked at Dana.
Dana leaned closer to her camera.
"Daniel, explain exactly what you know.""
Daniel took a breath.
"Richard told me he was setting up an investment vehicle for his wife. He said the company would purchase commercial properties and hold them separately from his business.""
"Did I authorize that?""
"No.""
"Did I sign anything?""
"Richard said you had.""
I laughed without humor.
"Of course he did.""
Daniel continued.
"The Raleigh property cost approximately two hundred and sixty thousand dollars. It was purchased using funds from the first loan and additional money transferred through the business.""
I looked down at my notes.
"Why put it in a company using a different surname?""
"Richard said it would keep your personal identity separate from the business.""
Dana interrupted.
"Who prepared the formation documents?""
"Richard's accountant.""
"Name?""
"Martin Keene.""
Dana wrote something down.
"Who signed the purchase documents?""
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
"Richard.""
"Under whose authority?""
"Yours, apparently.""
I felt my jaw tighten.
"Apparently?""
Daniel lowered his eyes.
"I didn't see you sign anything.""
"Then why did you participate?""
He didn't answer.
I leaned toward the screen.
"Daniel, you uploaded the loan documents containing my signature. You transferred money to a company you managed. You knew Richard was using my property as collateral. Why?""
His face reddened.
"Because I believed the arrangement was legitimate.""
"Did you receive money?""
He hesitated.
"Yes.""
"How much?""
"Thirty thousand dollars.""
I stared at him.
There it was again.
Another person had apparently decided my financial security was worth a payment.
Dana spoke calmly.
"Daniel, do you understand that you may be asked to provide records and testimony concerning these transactions?""
"Yes.""
"Then I suggest you preserve everything. Every email, message, invoice, transfer record, and document. Do not delete anything.""
Daniel nodded.
Then he looked directly at me.
"There's something else.""
I waited.
"Richard has been telling people that you agreed to the property purchase because you wanted to invest before retirement.""
"I never agreed to retire.""
"I know that now.""
"Who else knows?""
Daniel looked down.
"His accountant. Melissa. And possibly someone at the first lender.""
I closed my notebook.
"Why did you contact me?""
He took a long breath.
"Because Richard told me yesterday that you were going to accept responsibility for the loans.""
My stomach tightened.
"What?""
"He said you'd come around once the divorce papers arrived. He said you'd rather pay the debt than have your military career dragged into a public financial dispute.""
I stared at the screen.
"He's threatening my career?""
Daniel didn't answer.
Dana's expression hardened.
"Did Richard say anything about contacting her command?""
Daniel nodded.
"He said he'd make sure everyone knew she was involved.""
I felt a strange calm settle over me.
Richard had spent five years benefiting from my reputation.
Now he was threatening to damage it to protect himself.
"Did he say how he planned to prove I was involved?""
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
"He has copies of documents with your signature.""
"Forged documents.""
"I know.""
"Do you have copies?""
"Yes.""
Dana immediately spoke.
"Preserve them. Send them through the secure channel I'll provide. Do not alter the files.""
Daniel nodded.
Then he said something that made my blood run cold.
"There's another property.""
I closed my eyes.
"Where?""
"Virginia.""
"What's the address?""
He gave it to Dana.
She searched her records.
A few seconds passed.
Then she looked up.
"Charlotte, this property appears to have been purchased through the same entity.""
"What is it?""
"A small office building.""
Daniel nodded.
"Richard said he was buying it as an investment. He planned to rent the units to small businesses.""
"How much?""
"Approximately four hundred and ten thousand dollars.""
I stared at the screen.
"So the loans were used to buy two properties.""
"Some of the money, yes.""
"Who owns them?""
"On paper, Charlotte Mercer Holdings.""
I felt sick.
Richard hadn't just borrowed money in my name.
He had apparently created a company using a false identity, purchased property through it, and placed my name on documents I had never authorized.
"Why didn't you stop him?"" I asked.
Daniel looked at me.
"I should have.""
"That's not an answer.""
He lowered his voice.
"Because I had money invested in the company. And because Richard told me everything was approved.""
I looked at Dana.
She was typing rapidly.
"Daniel, the call is over. You will communicate through my office from now on.""
He nodded.
Before disconnecting, he looked at me one last time.
"Charlotte, I'm sorry.""
I didn't respond.
An apology was easy.
An explanation was harder.
And neither would erase what he'd done.
After the call ended, Dana remained on the screen.
"Are you all right?""
"No.""
She nodded.
"That's understandable.""
"How much debt are we talking about?""
"At least one million and thirty thousand dollars in the two loan facilities. We still need to confirm the exact disbursements, outstanding balances, and any additional obligations.""
I rubbed my eyes.
"And two properties.""
"Apparently.""
"Can the lenders take them?""
"That depends on the actual ownership, validity of the transactions, and the security documents. We need to investigate whether the entities were properly formed and whether the signatures were genuine.""
I looked at the company name Daniel had given us.
Charlotte Mercer Holdings.
It was a name I had never used.
"Can you search the company records?""
"I'm already doing that.""
Dana paused.
Then her expression changed.
"Charlotte, I found something.""
"What?""
"The company wasn't formed six months ago.""
I sat up.
"When?""
"Fourteen months ago.""
My mind raced.
Fourteen months.
Richard had been planning this long before the Sunday dinner.
"Who registered it?""
"An online formation service. The registered contact information leads back to an email account associated with Richard's business.""
I stared at the screen.
"Can we see the original filing?""
Dana shared a document.
I opened it.
The registered manager was listed as Charlotte Mercer.
The mailing address was my home.
And the signature section contained a scanned authorization.
I enlarged the image.
It wasn't my signature.
It wasn't even a convincing imitation.
The surname was written in a handwriting style I had never used.
But there was something more disturbing.
The document contained a copy of my driver's license.
The license photograph was mine.
The address was mine.
But the name had been altered.
My heart started pounding.
"How did he get this?""
Dana studied the page.
"Do you recognize the image?""
I looked closer.
Then I remembered.
About a year earlier, Richard had asked me to send him a photograph of my driver's license.
He'd claimed our insurance company needed updated identification for the household policy.
I had sent it without hesitation.
He'd used it to create a fake business identity.
"Can he do that?""
"He wasn't authorized to use your identity this way. We'll address the legal consequences once we establish the complete record.""
I stared at the document.
"Why would he create an entirely separate identity instead of simply putting my real name on the company?""
Dana zoomed in on the registered address.
Then she noticed something.
"Charlotte, look at the contact email.""
I leaned closer.
The email address wasn't Richard's usual business account.
It belonged to an account I'd seen once before.
A shared family email address.
One Patricia used for holiday invitations and family announcements.
I looked at Dana.
"His mother had access to that account.""
Dana didn't respond immediately.
She opened another page.
The original company formation record included an emergency contact number.
I recognized the last four digits.
They belonged to Patricia.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then my phone rang.
Richard.
I let it ring.
A voicemail appeared.
I played it through the laptop speakers.
His voice filled the room.
"Charlotte, I know you've been talking to Daniel. I don't know what he's told you, but you need to stop this before it gets out of control.""
A pause.
Then his voice became quieter.
"Mom is involved, and if you keep pushing, you're going to hurt people who had nothing to do with this.""
I stopped the recording.
Dana looked at me.
"Did you hear that?""
"Yes.""
"Save the voicemail. Do not delete it.""
I looked again at the company registration.
Patricia's phone number.
Patricia's email account.
Melissa's notarization.
Daniel's submission.
Richard's signature on the applications.
This wasn't one desperate decision made by a failing businessman.
It was a network of people, documents, and financial transactions.
And my husband had placed me in the middle of it without my knowledge.
I opened the voicemail again.
Mom is involved.
That was the sentence I couldn't stop hearing.
Richard had just confirmed something his mother had tried to hide.
And now I needed to know exactly what Patricia had done.
Because if she had helped create a false identity using my documents, the dinner-table humiliation might have been more than an ugly family argument.
May you like
It might have been an attempt to keep me quiet.
And I was beginning to suspect that the entire family had been counting on me never looking closely enough to discover the truth.
