Chapter 11: The Woman Who Was Pretending to Be Me

Dana arranged for the photograph and related documents to be examined.

She also contacted the appropriate authorities regarding the suspected identity misuse.

I sat across from her desk, staring at the image.

"Who is she?""

"We don't know yet.""

"Can we find out?""

"We're working through the information contained in the warehouse records.""

I rubbed my forehead.

"Richard had an actual person prepared to impersonate me?""

"That's one possibility. We shouldn't assume the photograph proves that she participated.""

I nodded.

But my mind kept returning to the handwritten note.

Alternate identity.

In-person verification.

It was horrifyingly specific.

At 2:15 p.m., Dana received a message from the investigator handling the document review.

The photograph had been identified.

The woman was named Vanessa Cole.

She was thirty-four years old and had previously worked as an administrative contractor for a company associated with Richard's business.

I stared at the name.

"Do I know her?""

"Not personally, according to the preliminary information.""

"What did she do for Richard?""

"Administrative work. Document processing. Client correspondence.""

"Could she have been the person who uploaded the loan applications?""

"Possibly. We don't know yet.""

Dana continued reading.

Then she stopped.

"Interesting.""

"What?""

"Vanessa left the company eight months ago.""

"Why?""

"Apparently, she resigned after a dispute over unpaid compensation.""

I looked at the photograph.

"Could Richard have paid her to impersonate me?""

"We need evidence before reaching that conclusion.""

At 3:04 p.m., an unknown number called my phone.

I answered cautiously.

"Hello?""

"Is this Charlotte Bennett?""

"Who's calling?""

"My name is Vanessa Cole.""

I sat upright.

Dana looked at me.

"How did you get my number?""

"Richard gave it to me months ago. He said you might contact me.""

My stomach tightened.

"Why?""

There was a pause.

Then she said:

"Because I think he's going to blame me for everything.""

I put the call on speaker.

Dana introduced herself as my attorney and asked Vanessa whether she was willing to speak with her.

"Yes," Vanessa said.

"But I want to be clear. I didn't know what he was doing at first.""

Dana asked her to explain.

Vanessa took a shaky breath.

"Richard hired me to organize financial documents for his business. He said he was restructuring the company and needed help preparing applications.""

"What kind of applications?"" Dana asked.

"Commercial loans. Property purchases. Company registrations.""

"Did you know Charlotte?""

"No. I'd never met her.""

"Did you ever communicate with her directly?""

"No.""

I leaned toward the phone.

"Did you use my identity?""

Vanessa went silent.

Then she answered.

"Yes.""

My chest tightened.

"How?""

"Richard gave me copies of your identification documents. He told me you were his wife and had authorized him to handle the paperwork.""

"Did you know the documents were false?""

"Not at first.""

"When did you find out?""

She exhaled.

"When the lender requested a live verification.""

I felt my blood run cold.

"What happened?""

"Richard told me to prepare for a video call.""

Dana asked, "What did he ask you to do?""

Vanessa hesitated.

"He wanted me to appear on the call.""

I stared at the phone.

"You were supposed to pretend to be me?""

"Yes.""

The room went silent.

Vanessa began crying.

"He said it was just a routine identity check. He gave me a script. He told me what to say about the property and the loan.""

I closed my eyes.

"What did you say?""

"I refused.""

"Why?""

"Because I knew it was wrong. I asked him why he couldn't simply have you join the call.""

"And?""

"He told me you were overseas and wouldn't be available.""

I looked at Dana.

"When was this?""

Vanessa gave us a date.

It was approximately six weeks before the Sunday dinner.

I had been in Virginia.

I had been working at my regular installation.

Richard had lied.

Dana asked whether Vanessa had kept any messages.

"Yes.""

"Any emails?""

"Yes.""

"Documents?""

"Some.""

"Have you deleted anything?""

"No.""

Dana instructed her to preserve everything and communicate through counsel.

Then Vanessa said something that made me grip the desk.

"There's something you need to know about the woman in the photograph.""

I looked at the screen.

"What?""

"That's not my photograph.""

I froze.

Dana leaned forward.

"Explain.""

"Richard showed me that image. He said it was a sample identity photograph for a document template. I told him it looked like a real person.""

"Did he identify her?""

"No.""

"Did he say where he got it?""

"He said someone had prepared it for him.""

I looked at the photograph again.

If it wasn't Vanessa, then who was the woman?

Vanessa continued.

"Richard had another person working with him. A woman who handled the verification paperwork.""

"Who?""

"I don't know her full name. He called her Claire.""

Dana wrote it down.

"Did you meet her?""

"Once. At the warehouse.""

"What did she look like?""

Vanessa described a woman in her late thirties with dark hair and a small scar near her chin.

I looked at the photograph.

It matched.

"Did she pretend to be Charlotte?""

Vanessa swallowed.

"She was supposed to.""

I felt sick.

Dana asked for more details.

Vanessa explained that Richard had arranged a verification appointment with the first lender.

The appointment was scheduled for a Thursday afternoon.

He told Vanessa to prepare the documents and ensure the woman was available.

But the appointment had been canceled at the last minute.

"Why?""

Vanessa hesitated.

"Richard said the lender had accepted the paperwork without needing the call.""

"Who told him that?""

"I don't know.""

"Did the woman receive money?""

"I heard Richard mention five thousand dollars.""

I thought about Melissa.

Five thousand dollars.

Another payment.

Another person being compensated for helping Richard use my identity.

"Did you ever see Claire again?"" I asked.

"No.""

"Do you know where she is?""

"No.""

Dana thanked Vanessa and ended the call.

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

Then I whispered:

"How many people did he involve?""

Dana looked at the evidence on her screen.

"We're still finding out.""

At 5:20 p.m., my phone rang.

Richard.

I declined.

A message arrived.

*You need to stop talking to Vanessa.*

Then:

*She doesn't know anything about our marriage.*

I stared at the words.

How did he know I'd spoken to her?

I sent the messages to Dana.

She called immediately.

"Do not respond.""

"He's monitoring everyone.""

"Or someone is telling him what is happening. We need to identify the source.""

At 6:02, another message arrived.

This one was from Richard's mother.

*Charlotte, please. Richard says the police are asking questions. You need to tell them this was a misunderstanding.*

I read it twice.

Then I called Patricia.

"Why?""

She began crying.

"Because this is getting out of hand.""

"Did you know Richard had arranged for someone to impersonate me?""

Silence.

"Patricia?""

"I didn't know about the woman.""

"Did you know about the false company?""

"I told you I only helped with the paperwork.""

"Did you know about the second loan?""

She began crying harder.

"Richard said everything was under control.""

I closed my eyes.

"Did you receive money from Northbridge?""

"Yes.""

"How much?""

"I already told you.""

"No. You told me about the eighteen thousand. I'm asking about Northbridge.""

She went quiet.

Then she whispered:

"One hundred and twenty thousand.""

I stood up.

"What?""

"Richard said he was putting the money somewhere safe.""

I gripped the phone.

"Did you keep it?""

"Some of it.""

"Where is the rest?""

"I don't know.""

"Patricia, you received one hundred and twenty thousand dollars from a company connected to fraudulent loans?""

"I didn't know they were fraudulent!""

"Then why did Richard tell you to keep the money safe?""

She began sobbing.

"He said you were going to take everything from him.""

I stared at the wall.

"Did he tell you what he planned to do with the money?""

"He said it was for the family.""

"Which family?""

She didn't answer.

Then she whispered:

"Richard said if you found out, we'd all have to leave the country.""

My entire body went cold.

"Leave the country?""

"He said he had somewhere we could go.""

"Where?""

"I don't know.""

I heard her crying.

Then the call disconnected.

I immediately called Dana.

She listened carefully.

"That's a significant statement. Document it. We'll need to investigate whether there are plans to transfer assets or relocate.""

I looked at the clock.

6:18 p.m.

Richard had apparently prepared a false identity, involved a woman to impersonate me, moved money through multiple companies, and discussed leaving the country with his family.

I thought about the sentence from the dinner table.

You're grounded until you apologize to my son.

He had believed he could still control me.

He had believed I would stay in the house, accept his rules, and keep paying for his mistakes.

Instead, I had left.

And now his entire arrangement was beginning to collapse.

At 7:03 p.m., Dana received a new email from the lender.

The message contained a preliminary list of beneficiaries connected to the loan proceeds.

One name stood out.

*Claire Morgan.*

Payment received: $15,000.

Description: Identity verification services.

Dana looked at me.

"Charlotte, I think we've found the woman from the photograph.""

Then she opened another attachment.

It contained a photograph of a bank transfer authorization.

The account receiving the fifteen thousand dollars belonged to a company registered in another state.

May you like

And its manager was not Claire.

It was Richard.
