Chapter 12: The Money Was Never for His Business
The next morning, Dana placed three documents in front of me.
The first was the original loan disbursement schedule.
The second was the company registration for Northbridge Asset Management.
The third was a spreadsheet recovered from Richard's warehouse.
Across the top, someone had written:
*Family Protection Fund.*
I stared at the heading.
"Who made this?""
"We're still establishing that.""
I looked at the numbers.
The spreadsheet listed payments to Patricia, Julian, Daniel, and several companies.
But the last column was what caught my attention.
It was labeled:
*Destination After Settlement.*
Several entries had already been completed.
Two properties.
One apartment.
An offshore account.
A company registered outside Virginia.
I looked up.
"Is this an actual offshore account?""
"We've identified a foreign financial institution listed in the supporting records. We haven't independently confirmed the balance or ownership yet.""
"How much?""
"The spreadsheet lists approximately $210,000.""
I leaned back.
"Two hundred and ten thousand dollars?""
"That's the amount Richard recorded.""
I looked at the other entries.
The money from the first and second loans had apparently been divided among several destinations.
The commercial properties.
Julian's apartment.
Patricia's company.
Daniel's business.
And now an overseas account.
I rubbed my forehead.
"How much of the original loan money is unaccounted for?""
"At least two hundred thousand dollars based on the records currently available. We need complete bank statements to establish the exact amount.""
I looked at the spreadsheet again.
There was a column marked with initials.
C.B.
Beside it was a figure.
$420,000.
My stomach tightened.
"What's that?""
Dana looked at the page.
"That appears to be a projected amount.""
"Projected for what?""
"Possibly a liability allocation.""
I stared at the number.
The deed of trust had secured the obligation up to approximately four hundred and twenty thousand dollars.
The amount beside my initials was exactly the same.
I felt sick.
"He planned to leave me with the entire first loan.""
"That's what the document suggests, although we need the original records and supporting evidence.""
I looked at the second loan.
"What about the six hundred and fifty thousand?""
Dana turned another page.
The spreadsheet listed the second facility separately.
Under the heading was a handwritten note:
*Charlotte — total exposure.*
The amount was $650,000.
I sat very still.
Richard had apparently assigned the full amount of both loans to me.
More than a million dollars.
He had planned to move the assets elsewhere while leaving me responsible for the debts.
I thought about his threat.
You have no idea what you've just done.
He hadn't been warning me about the consequences of freezing an account.
He had been warning me that I was disrupting a plan.
Dana closed the folder.
"Charlotte, I need you to understand something. These records are significant, but we're not going to assume every handwritten note reflects a completed transaction. We need to verify the money trail.""
"I understand.""
"There's another issue.""
"What?""
"Richard has retained a lawyer.""
I looked up.
"Already?""
"Yes. His attorney contacted me this morning.""
"What did he want?""
"To discuss a possible settlement.""
I almost laughed.
"A settlement?""
"Apparently Richard wants to resolve the marital dispute privately.""
I stared at her.
"Does he know about the investigation?""
"His attorney knows that financial documents have been disputed.""
I shook my head.
"What exactly is Richard offering?""
Dana opened an email.
"He proposes that you withdraw your complaints to the lenders, acknowledge that the loans were entered into with your consent, and agree to a repayment arrangement.""
I stared at her.
"He wants me to sign a statement saying I authorized the loans?""
"Yes.""
"And what does he offer in return?""
"To transfer the two commercial properties into your name.""
I looked at her.
"He wants me to accept the debt and take ownership of the properties?""
"That's the proposal.""
I laughed.
A real laugh this time.
"He's offering me property purchased with money he borrowed using my identity, in exchange for admitting I approved the loans?""
"Essentially.""
I shook my head.
"Absolutely not.""
Dana nodded.
"That was my recommendation.""
I looked out the window.
"He's trying to make the forged documents legitimate after the fact.""
"That's one concern.""
My phone buzzed.
A message from Richard.
*Dana has probably told you about my offer. It's fair. Take the properties, and we can move forward.*
I stared at the screen.
Another message followed.
*You wanted independence. This is your chance.*
I forwarded both messages to Dana.
Then I typed:
*I will communicate through my attorney.*
I didn't send anything else.
At noon, Richard's attorney sent a formal settlement proposal.
It included a draft declaration stating that I had knowingly participated in the loan applications and had authorized the use of my property as collateral.
It also required me to release any claims against Richard, Melissa, Patricia, and Daniel relating to the transactions.
In exchange, I would receive ownership of the two commercial properties.
I read the document twice.
Then I looked at Dana.
"Does he really think I'm going to sign this?""
"He's trying to create a record that you accepted responsibility. That's why you must not sign it.""
I pushed the paper away.
"Decline.""
Dana drafted a response.
Within twenty minutes, it was sent.
At 1:36 p.m., Richard called.
I let it go to voicemail.
His message was short.
"Charlotte, you're making a mistake. I'm trying to give you a way out. If you refuse, nobody is going to help you when this gets ugly.""
I saved the voicemail.
Then I checked my email.
There was a message from an address I didn't recognize.
The subject line read:
*You Need to Know What Richard Did With the Remaining Money.*
The sender identified herself as Claire Morgan.
I immediately forwarded it to Dana.
She told me not to open any attachments until she had reviewed the message.
The email contained only a short paragraph.
*I worked with Richard on the identity verification documents. I was paid to attend a meeting as you, but the meeting never happened. I have records showing where the money went. I also have a document Richard told me to sign after the first loan was approved.*
Below it was a telephone number.
Dana contacted her through counsel.
Two hours later, Claire agreed to provide a statement.
She appeared on a video call at 4:15 p.m.
She looked younger than the woman in the warehouse photograph.
Her hair was tied back.
She kept glancing away from the camera.
"I don't want trouble," she began.
Dana answered calmly.
"Then tell us what happened truthfully.""
Claire nodded.
"Richard hired me through a contractor. He said his wife was aware of the financial arrangements, but she was often unavailable because of military work.""
I stared at her.
"Did he ask you to impersonate me?""
"Yes.""
"Why did you agree?""
"He offered me fifteen thousand dollars.""
"Did you receive it?""
"Ten thousand.""
"What happened to the rest?""
"He said it would be paid after the verification meeting.""
Dana asked whether Claire had attended any meeting.
"No. It was canceled.""
"Did you know the identity documents were false?""
Claire looked down.
"I knew the photograph wasn't mine. Richard told me the identity was only for a temporary verification process.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Did you know my name was being used?""
"Yes.""
"Did you know I hadn't authorized it?""
She hesitated.
"Not at first.""
"How did you find out?""
"Richard called me after the lender requested additional verification. He told me the wife was refusing to cooperate and that I needed to be prepared to answer questions.""
I stared at her.
"What did you do?""
"I told him I wanted out.""
"What happened?""
"He threatened to report me for fraud.""
Dana interrupted.
"Did he provide anything in writing?""
Claire nodded.
"Yes. Messages and an agreement.""
She sent the documents through Dana's secure channel.
One was a payment agreement.
The other was a text exchange.
Richard had written:
*Once the verification is complete, everyone gets paid. Charlotte won't know anything until the transfer is finished.*
I read the sentence twice.
Everyone gets paid.
My name was being used to borrow money.
My house was being used as collateral.
And the people helping him were expecting payment.
Claire continued.
"There's another thing.""
Dana looked up.
"What?""
"Richard told me the money wasn't actually for the business.""
I leaned forward.
"Where was it going?""
Claire swallowed.
"He said he was buying assets before the company collapsed. He planned to move everything into separate companies and leave the debts behind.""
I stared at the screen.
"Did he say what would happen to me?""
Claire nodded slowly.
"He said you'd be responsible for the loans because your name was on the documents.""
I felt my hands tighten.
"Did he say anything about leaving the country?""
Claire looked frightened.
"Yes.""
Dana asked her to explain.
"He said he had somewhere overseas where he could stay if the investigation became serious.""
"Where?""
"I don't know exactly. He mentioned Portugal.""
I looked at Dana.
Richard had discussed leaving the country with Patricia.
He had moved money overseas.
He had created false identities.
And he had apparently planned to leave me holding the debt.
Then Claire opened another document.
It was a handwritten instruction sheet.
The heading read:
*Final Transfer — November.*
Beneath it were several steps.
Transfer the properties.
Move the remaining reserve funds.
Close the business accounts.
Terminate the warehouse lease.
And one final instruction:
*Charlotte to receive notice only after settlement is complete.*
I stared at the date.
November.
It was the current month.
Richard hadn't been preparing an escape for some distant future.
He had been preparing to execute it now.
At 5:02 p.m., Dana received a message from the investigator.
The first lender had identified another attempted transfer.
A payment of $85,000 had been initiated from an account connected to the holding company.
The destination account was overseas.
The transfer had been flagged before completion.
I looked at Dana.
"Can they stop it?""
"They've placed a temporary hold pending review.""
I exhaled.
Then my phone rang.
Richard.
This time, I answered.
His voice was almost unrecognizable.
"What have you done?""
I said nothing.
"They've frozen the transfer.""
"Which transfer?""
"Don't play stupid, Charlotte!""
I leaned back.
"Richard, I have no idea what you're talking about.""
"You've ruined everything!""
I looked at Dana.
She was silently taking notes.
Richard continued.
"You think you're clever because you have a lawyer? You think you can just walk away and leave me with nothing?""
I waited.
Then he said:
"You need to tell them the money was yours. You need to tell them you authorized the transfers.""
I closed my eyes.
There it was.
The admission I'd been waiting for.
"Why would I do that?""
"Because you're my wife!""
"Not for much longer.""
He went silent.
Then his voice dropped.
"If you don't fix this, I'll tell everyone what you've been hiding.""
I stared at the phone.
"What have I been hiding, Richard?""
A long pause.
Then he said:
"Your signature isn't the only thing I have.""
The call ended.
I looked at Dana.
She had stopped writing.
"What does he mean?"" I asked.
She didn't answer immediately.
Then she opened the latest file from the warehouse.
There was another document inside.
A personal financial declaration bearing my name.
This time, the signature looked almost perfect.
But beneath it was a handwritten note.
*Use original signature sample from Charlotte's personnel records.*
Dana enlarged the final page.
At the bottom was the name of the person who had supplied the sample.
*Lieutenant Colonel Barnes.*
I felt the room tilt.
May you like
Richard had apparently obtained a document bearing my commanding officer's name.
And for the first time, the financial fraud seemed connected to something that could threaten my military career in a way I had never imagined.
