Chapter 18: The Forty Million Dollar Deadline

Arthur Pembroke was eighty-four years old.

He had practiced law for more than fifty years, represented the Whitaker family through three generations, and retired shortly after William's death.

When we reached the hospital, he was conscious but exhausted.

A nurse allowed us ten minutes.

Thomas entered first.

Arthur recognized him immediately.

"Thomas Whitaker," he said.

Thomas approached the bed.

"I'm sorry this happened.""

Arthur gave a faint smile.

"Don't apologize for other people's sins.""

Then his eyes moved to me.

"And you must be Emma.""

I nodded.

"Yes.""

He studied my face.

"You look like Margaret.""

Olivia stepped forward.

"And I'm Olivia.""

Arthur closed his eyes.

"Good Lord.""

He looked between us.

"She found you both.""

I felt my throat tighten.

"She tried.""

Arthur reached toward the bedside table.

There was a small leather notebook.

"Your grandmother left instructions with me. She knew Richard would eventually attempt to seize control of the foundation.""

Daniel moved closer.

"Do you have the original agreement?""

Arthur nodded.

"Not here.""

"Where is it?""

"In a private archive. The key was stolen tonight.""

Nathan folded his arms.

"Can the archive be accessed without it?""

Arthur looked at him.

"Not without authorization.""

"Who has authorization?""

Arthur looked directly at me.

"The three beneficiaries, once the conditions in the agreement are satisfied.""

I glanced at Olivia.

"And Ethan?""

Arthur nodded.

"All three children.""

I took a breath.

"Can you explain what William intended?""

Arthur adjusted his pillow.

"William was a difficult man. Wealthy, proud, and accustomed to getting what he wanted. When he learned Thomas had fathered three children with Diane, he became concerned about the future of the Whitaker estate.""

Thomas lowered his eyes.

Arthur continued.

"He feared Richard would exploit the children to gain control of the family's assets. At first, William proposed separating the children temporarily. He believed the arrangement would protect them from a public scandal.""

Olivia frowned.

"Temporarily?""

Arthur nodded.

"That was the original intention. But Richard and Peter turned the arrangement into something permanent.""

I felt anger rising.

"So William knew?""

"He knew about the separation. He did not know the full extent of the deception until much later.""

Thomas's voice was quiet.

"Why didn't he stop it?""

Arthur looked at him.

"Because by then, he was dying.""

The room fell silent.

Arthur reached for a glass of water.

"Before his death, William amended the foundation agreement. He named all three children as equal beneficiaries and placed control in their hands once the youngest turned thirty.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"Does Richard have authority to move the assets before then?""

Arthur hesitated.

"Under the original agreement, he has administrative authority. But he cannot transfer the principal for personal benefit.""

"Unless?""

Arthur looked at me.

"Unless he produces a document claiming the children were legally disqualified from inheriting.""

Daniel's face tightened.

"The fraudulent guardianship petition.""

"Possibly. But there is another problem.""

Arthur removed a folded sheet from beneath the notebook.

It was a copy of a document.

The heading read:

*WHITAKER FAMILY FOUNDATION — BENEFICIARY DISQUALIFICATION NOTICE.*

I read the first paragraph.

It claimed that all three children had voluntarily renounced their inheritance rights.

My name appeared first.

Then Olivia's.

Then Ethan's.

None of us had signed it.

Daniel examined the document.

"This is forged.""

Arthur nodded.

"Yes. But Richard has already submitted it to the foundation's trustees.""

Olivia stared at him.

"Can he get away with that?""

"Not if we prove it was forged before the deadline.""

Nathan looked at Daniel.

"How long do we have?""

Daniel checked his watch.

"Eleven days.""

I looked back at Arthur.

"What happens if we fail?""

Arthur's expression turned grave.

"Richard could transfer the foundation's liquid assets into a company he controls. Once that happens, recovering the money could take years.""

I felt a cold anger settle inside me.

"Then we won't fail.""

Arthur smiled faintly.

"Margaret said you would say that.""

He opened the notebook.

Inside were handwritten notes, account numbers, and a list of names.

One name was circled.

Victor Lang.

Daniel recognized it.

"Richard's attorney.""

Arthur nodded.

"Victor drafted the disqualification notice. But he didn't create the original agreement.""

"Who did?""

Arthur looked toward the window.

"A trustee named Malcolm Reed.""

Daniel searched the name.

"Is he still alive?""

Arthur shook his head.

"Malcolm died five years ago.""

I exhaled.

"Then who can verify the document?""

Arthur turned another page.

A name was written at the bottom.

*Evelyn Shaw — Senior Trust Officer.*

"She handled the original beneficiary records," Arthur said.

"She knows every amendment William made.""

Daniel typed quickly.

"I can locate her.""

Arthur caught my wrist gently.

"One more thing.""

I leaned closer.

"Yes?""

"Margaret left a separate letter for you. She told me not to give it to you until all three children were together.""

He opened the leather notebook and removed a sealed envelope.

My name was written across the front.

I recognized the handwriting.

I broke the seal.

My dear Emma,

If you are reading this, then the three of you have finally found one another.

I wish I could have stood beside you.

There is something I never told you about Richard.

He did not begin this deception because he wanted money.

I stopped.

The next line made my stomach turn.

He began because he was afraid that the truth about his own birth would destroy the life he had built.

I looked up.

"His birth?""

Arthur nodded slowly.

"Richard has a secret of his own.""

Thomas looked confused.

"What kind of secret?""

Arthur's voice was barely audible.

"Richard Hale was not born into the Hale family.""

I stared at him.

"Then who was he?""

Arthur looked toward Daniel.

"That is what the original adoption file will prove.""

Daniel frowned.

"Richard was adopted?""

Arthur nodded.

"By the very family whose fortune he has spent his life trying to control.""

I looked back at the letter.

There was another page.

Richard's birth mother was connected to William Whitaker. He discovered the truth shortly before the triplets were born.

I felt my breath catch.

"Connected how?""

Arthur closed his eyes.

"She was William's daughter.""

Silence filled the room.

Thomas looked stunned.

Olivia slowly lowered herself into a chair.

I stared at Arthur.

"You're saying Richard was William's grandson?""

Arthur nodded.

"Yes. Richard was adopted by the Hale family as an infant. William knew his identity, but he never acknowledged him publicly.""

Daniel's expression changed.

"That means Richard was trying to claim the inheritance through a hidden family connection.""

Arthur nodded again.

"But William's final agreement explicitly excluded Richard from direct ownership. He wanted the three children to inherit instead.""

I looked at the forged disqualification notice.

Suddenly, everything made sense.

The money.

The separation.

The false medical reports.

The guardianship petition.

Richard hadn't simply wanted to steal our inheritance.

He believed it belonged to him.

And he had spent thirty years building a plan to take it.

My phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number.

There was no greeting.

Only a photograph.

It showed Ethan sitting in his hospital bed.

The picture had been taken minutes earlier.

Beneath it was a sentence.

*Tell your brother to stop asking questions. He has already lost one family. He can lose another.*

I looked at Nathan.

He read the message.

Then he turned toward the hospital door.

Daniel was already calling security.

But another message arrived.

This one contained a photograph of our grandmother's original adoption agreement.

May you like

And a final line:

*I HAVE THE DOCUMENT THAT PROVES WHO RICHARD REALLY IS. MEET ME ALONE TOMORROW, OR YOUR BROTHER DISAPPEARS.*
