Chapter 14: The Storage Unit Full of Lies

The storage facility was located outside Hartford, Connecticut.

It was an ordinary place.

Rows of gray metal doors.

A small reception office.

A security camera above the entrance.

Nothing about it suggested that it contained the secrets of an entire family.

But according to Grandma's letter, Unit 418 had belonged to Peter Hale for more than twenty years.

Olivia stood beside me while Daniel spoke to the facility manager.

Nathan had arranged for an investigator to accompany us.

We weren't interested in taking anything illegally.

We wanted the contents preserved and properly documented.

The manager checked the ownership records.

"Mr. Peter Hale is still listed as the account holder," he said.

Daniel showed him a copy of the estate-related authorization.

"We have reason to believe this unit contains documents connected to a suspected financial fraud investigation. We'd like to arrange lawful access through the appropriate procedure.""

The manager examined the paperwork.

After several phone calls, he returned with a key.

"Mr. Hale hasn't paid for this unit in fourteen months. It's currently under review for delinquency, but the contents haven't been disposed of.""

I looked at the metal door.

418.

My sister stood beside me.

"Ready?""

"No.""

She smiled sadly.

"Me neither.""

The manager unlocked the unit.

The door rolled upward.

Inside were cardboard boxes, old furniture, several filing cabinets, and a wooden desk.

Dust covered everything.

Daniel photographed the room before anyone entered.

"Don't touch anything until we establish what we're looking at.""

An hour later, the investigators had catalogued twelve boxes.

The first contained old tax records.

The second held photographs.

The third contained business documents belonging to my father.

The fourth was different.

It was labeled:

*WHITAKER FAMILY — CONFIDENTIAL.*

Daniel opened it carefully.

Inside were bank statements, legal correspondence, and several envelopes bearing my grandmother's handwriting.

Olivia reached for one.

"That's Grandma's.""

She opened it.

The letter was addressed to Peter.

Peter,

I know what you did.

I know you accepted money to help Richard separate Emma and Olivia from their biological father.

I also know you have continued to assist Richard in hiding the truth.

You have disappointed me more than I can express.

If you have any conscience left, return the original documents and stop participating in this deception.

Olivia read the final line twice.

These girls deserve the truth. They have already lost enough.

I felt my throat tighten.

"Grandma knew everything.""

Daniel nodded.

"Apparently, she discovered Peter's involvement years ago.""

Nathan opened the next folder.

It contained a list of bank transfers.

Several payments had gone from Richard's business account to Peter's.

Others had gone to Victor Lang.

But one transaction stood out.

$500,000.

Transferred to an offshore investment company.

The date was October 1997.

Less than two months after our birth.

Daniel studied the paperwork.

"That's significant.""

"Why?"" I asked.

"Because the company was registered under a false name, but the beneficial owner appears to have been Richard.""

Olivia frowned.

"Was that money part of the trust?""

Daniel shook his head.

"No. It appears to have originated from the Whitaker family settlement.""

I felt sick.

My father had received $200,000 to disappear from Thomas's life.

Then he had used another $500,000 to establish a hidden investment structure.

He hadn't been a struggling young father trying to build a future.

He had been a man who had profited from separating two children from their biological family.

And apparently, he had never stopped.

The investigator opened another cabinet.

Inside was a black binder.

On its spine, someone had written:

*PROJECT EMMA.*

I stared at it.

The same phrase from the $90,000 payment.

Daniel opened the binder.

The first page contained a handwritten timeline.

1997 — Birth and separation.

2001 — Margaret establishes protected trust.

2008 — Medical evaluation arranged.

2014 — First unauthorized trust inquiry.

2020 — Beneficiary access delayed.

2025 — Estate restructuring proposal.

2026 — Guardianship and settlement strategy.

I looked at the last entry.

"What does estate restructuring mean?""

Daniel turned the page.

A document appeared.

It was a draft agreement between Richard, Diane, Peter, and Victor.

The agreement described a plan to transfer my grandmother's remaining assets into Hale Legacy Holdings.

But there was a condition.

Both Emma and Olivia had to be legally recognized as incapable of independently managing their inherited interests.

I looked at my sister.

"They were planning to take both our inheritances.""

Olivia nodded.

"My adoptive parents never told me I had any inheritance.""

Daniel examined the document.

"That may be because the trust was structured to protect both beneficiaries.""

I frowned.

"Both?""

He pulled out another document.

It was a trust amendment.

My grandmother had established a separate protected allocation for Olivia.

The amount was $1.8 million.

Olivia covered her mouth.

"She left me money?""

"Yes," Daniel said.

"And according to the amendment, you were never required to know about it until you reached thirty.""

Olivia looked at me.

"That's next month.""

I felt tears fill my eyes.

Grandma had protected us both.

Even when she couldn't bring us together, she had made sure neither of us would be left with nothing.

Then Nathan found something at the bottom of the binder.

A handwritten note.

It was from Peter.

Richard is becoming reckless. He believes the girls will never discover the truth. I am no longer certain that's true.

Underneath was another sentence.

If anything happens to me, the original adoption agreement is with the person who arranged the second placement.

Daniel looked up.

"Second placement?""

Olivia's face went pale.

"What does that mean?""

He turned the page.

There were two adoption records.

One for Olivia.

And another document describing a temporary placement arrangement involving an unidentified third party.

I stared.

"Who was the third party?""

The investigator checked the envelope attached to the document.

There was a name.

A woman named Eleanor Brooks.

I had never heard of her.

Olivia shook her head.

"Neither have I.""

Daniel studied the date.

"She was connected to the Whitaker family.""

I looked at him.

"Was there another child?""

He didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he examined the document's final paragraph.

Then he looked at us.

"There's a possibility that the adoption arrangement involved more than one child.""

My heart began pounding.

Olivia gripped my hand.

"Emma, what is happening?""

Before Daniel could answer, his phone rang.

It was the investigator's supervisor.

He listened silently.

Then he turned toward us.

"Peter Hale has been located.""

"Where?"" I asked.

"At a private residence in Connecticut.""

"Is he under arrest?""

"Not yet. But he has requested legal protection in exchange for providing information about Richard.""

Daniel frowned.

"Information about what?""

The investigator checked his notes.

Then he looked at me.

"He's claiming Richard has been hiding another child.""

My blood went cold.

"Another child?""

May you like

He nodded.

"And according to Peter, that child is the reason Richard arranged the separation of you and Olivia in the first place.""
