Chapter 13: My Sister Had Been Looking for Me

I stared at Olivia's photograph for nearly five minutes.

She had my eyes.

Not similar eyes.

The exact same shade of green, with the tiny brown flecks near the pupils that I had inherited from my grandmother.

She also had my smile.

The kind I had always thought came from my mother's side of the family.

I zoomed in on the photograph.

Olivia was standing beside Grandma Margaret in front of a Christmas tree. They were holding matching mugs, laughing at something outside the frame.

My grandmother looked happy.

Not politely happy.

Genuinely happy.

The kind of happiness I hadn't seen in her photographs for years.

"She knew," I whispered.

Nathan stood beside me.

"Apparently.""

"She knew where my sister was, and she never told me.""

Daniel carefully closed his laptop.

"Emma, there's a possibility she was protecting both of you.""

I turned toward him.

"From what?""

"We don't know yet.""

I looked at the photograph again.

Grandma had died eleven months after it was posted.

That meant Olivia had known her.

She had spent time with her.

She had probably celebrated birthdays with her.

Meanwhile, I had visited Grandma every Sunday, believing I was her only grandchild.

I felt a familiar ache behind my eyes.

"How could she keep this from me?""

Nathan pulled me into his arms.

"Maybe she intended to explain everything eventually.""

"She died before she could.""

He didn't argue.

Daniel cleared his throat.

"I found Olivia's professional contact information. She works at a law firm in Boston.""

I looked at him.

"Can you contact her?""

"Yes. But I suggest we approach this carefully. We don't know what her adoptive parents told her.""

I nodded.

"Tell her the truth.""

Daniel drafted a brief email.

He explained that we had discovered records indicating we were biological twins and that our grandmother had maintained contact with her.

He attached one photograph.

A picture of Grandma holding two newborn babies.

One of them was me.

The other was Olivia.

We sent it.

Then we waited.

Twenty minutes passed.

Nothing.

An hour.

Still nothing.

At 4:36 p.m., my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

"Hello?""

A woman's voice came through.

"Is this Emma?""

My heart stopped.

"Yes.""

"My name is Olivia Bennett.""

I closed my eyes.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then she asked the question that would stay with me forever.

"Are you really my sister?""

I couldn't answer.

Tears rolled down my face.

"Yes.""

She inhaled sharply.

"Oh, my God.""

I heard something fall.

Then she began crying.

"I knew something was wrong. I knew there was something they weren't telling me.""

I gripped the phone.

"What do you mean?""

Olivia took a shaky breath.

"My adoptive parents told me I was adopted when I was six. They said my birth mother couldn't raise me and that there was no information about my biological family.""

I looked at Nathan.

He squeezed my hand.

"Did you know about Grandma Margaret?""

"Yes. She visited me every year.""

My chest tightened.

"Every year?""

"Until she died.""

Olivia paused.

"She told me I had a sister. She said you were living with a difficult family and that she couldn't safely bring us together yet.""

I felt tears streaming down my cheeks.

"She told you about me?""

"She showed me pictures.""

I couldn't speak.

Olivia continued.

"I have a photograph of you when you were about eight. You're wearing a yellow dress, standing beside a Christmas tree.""

I remembered that dress.

Grandma had bought it for me.

"She said you loved drawing.""

I laughed through my tears.

"I still do.""

Olivia laughed too.

Then her voice became serious.

"Emma, there's something else.""

"What?""

"Grandma left me a letter. She told me to open it if anyone ever tried to contact me about the family trust.""

My stomach tightened.

"Do you still have it?""

"Yes.""

"Can you read it?""

There was a pause.

"I think you should hear this in person.""

We arranged to meet the following afternoon.

Before ending the call, Olivia said something that made my heart ache.

"Emma?""

"Yes?""

"I've imagined meeting you my entire life.""

I swallowed.

"Me too.""

The next day, Nathan and I drove to Boston with Daniel.

Olivia chose a small private room at her law firm's office.

When we entered, she was standing near the window.

For a moment, we simply stared at each other.

Then she walked toward me.

Neither of us knew whether to hug.

Finally, Olivia opened her arms.

I stepped into them.

It felt strange.

And familiar.

Like finding a missing piece of something I hadn't known was broken.

She smelled like vanilla perfume.

Her hands trembled against my back.

"I can't believe you're real," she whispered.

I laughed softly.

"Same.""

We sat together.

Olivia studied my face.

"Your nose...""

I touched the medical splint.

"My father broke it.""

Her expression hardened.

"Your father?""

"Richard Hale.""

Olivia went very still.

"Richard?""

I nodded.

She looked toward Nathan.

Then back at me.

"Emma, we need to talk about him.""

I frowned.

"Why?""

Olivia opened her handbag and removed a thick envelope.

"I found this among Grandma's belongings after she died.""

She placed it on the table.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Margaret Hale.

Olivia opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter, several photographs, and a copy of a legal agreement.

She handed me the letter.

My darling girls,

If you are reading this together, then the truth has finally found its way home.

I stopped.

My eyes filled immediately.

Olivia continued reading aloud.

I have spent too many years watching powerful people make decisions for children who had no voice.

I could not save you both when you were born. But I made certain that neither of you would be erased.

Emma, your father is Thomas Whitaker.

Olivia, your father is also Thomas Whitaker.

And Richard Hale is the man who arranged your separation.

I looked at Olivia.

She was crying.

But the letter continued.

There is one more truth. Richard did not act alone.

I turned the page.

The person who helped him arrange the adoption was someone you both know.

At the bottom was a name.

Not Diane.

Not Victor.

Not William Whitaker.

It was the name of the man who had spent twenty-seven years telling everyone he was protecting our family.

*Peter Hale.*

I looked at Olivia.

"Uncle Peter?""

She nodded slowly.

Then she opened the legal agreement.

It was dated September 1997.

At the bottom were three signatures.

Richard Hale.

Peter Hale.

And Diane Hale.

But there was another document attached.

A financial authorization.

It showed a transfer of $150,000 to Peter Hale's personal account.

The payment had been made two days after our separation.

I looked at Olivia.

"Why would Uncle Peter get paid?""

She turned the document over.

There was a handwritten note on the back.

Payment for arranging the placement and ensuring Thomas Whitaker receives no information about the second child.

My hands began trembling.

Peter hadn't simply helped my father steal my inheritance.

He had helped separate two newborn sisters.

And he had been standing in the ballroom, pretending to be shocked by everything.

Olivia reached for my hand.

"Emma, there's something else Grandma told me.""

"What?""

She looked directly into my eyes.

"She said Peter kept the original adoption agreement.""

"Where?""

Olivia swallowed.

"In a storage facility in Connecticut.""

May you like

Then she added:

"Grandma also said that if we ever found that document, we would discover why Richard was so desperate to keep us apart.""
