Chapter 15: The Third Name on the Birth Record
Peter agreed to meet us at a lawyer's office the following morning.
He arrived with his attorney.
He looked terrible.
His hair was uncombed, his face pale, and his hands shook as he placed a glass of water on the table.
Olivia sat beside me.
Nathan sat on my other side.
Daniel occupied the chair opposite Peter.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then I asked the question.
"How many children were born that day?""
Peter looked at me.
"Three.""
I felt the room disappear.
Olivia grabbed my hand.
"Three?""
Peter nodded.
"Your mother gave birth to triplets.""
I stared at him.
I had spent thirty years believing I was an only child.
Then I had discovered Olivia.
Now there was a third baby.
"Where is the third child?""
Peter looked down.
"I don't know.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"Mr. Hale, we need precise answers. What happened in September 1997?""
Peter took a long breath.
"Your mother was pregnant with triplets. Richard knew Thomas was the biological father. William Whitaker was furious when he learned there would be three children.""
"Why?"" Olivia asked.
"Because his family believed the children would eventually become beneficiaries of the Whitaker estate.""
Daniel nodded.
"That would explain the financial motive.""
Peter continued.
"William wanted the children separated. He believed that if they were raised in different households, there would be less chance of a future inheritance dispute.""
I felt sick.
"They separated newborn babies because of money?""
Peter closed his eyes.
"Yes.""
Olivia's voice trembled.
"What happened to the third baby?""
Peter opened his briefcase.
He removed an old hospital photograph.
Three newborn babies.
Two girls.
One boy.
I stared at the photograph.
My mother was holding one baby.
Thomas was standing beside her.
A nurse was holding the other two.
On the back, Grandma had written:
Emma, Olivia, and their little brother.
I felt tears slide down my face.
"Our brother.""
Peter nodded.
"His name was Daniel.""
I blinked.
"Where is he?""
"Richard arranged for him to be placed with another family.""
"Which family?""
Peter shook his head.
"I don't know.""
Olivia leaned forward.
"You helped arrange all this. How can you not know?""
Peter looked ashamed.
"Because Richard handled the third placement himself.""
Daniel opened his laptop.
"Was there an adoption record?""
"Yes. But it was registered under a different name.""
"What name?""
Peter looked toward the window.
"Ethan Brooks.""
The name meant nothing to me.
But Daniel immediately began typing.
"Do you have any documentation?""
Peter removed another envelope.
Inside was a copy of a birth record.
It listed three babies.
Emma Hale.
Olivia Hale.
And Daniel Hale.
But the third name had been crossed out.
A replacement name had been typed underneath.
Ethan Brooks.
I looked at the date.
September 1, 1997.
"Why did Richard keep this?""
Peter answered quietly.
"Because he needed proof that the third child had been placed legally. William wanted to make sure no one could ever challenge the arrangement.""
Daniel examined the document.
"This record has been altered.""
Peter nodded.
"Richard arranged the changes through someone at the hospital.""
Nathan leaned forward.
"Who?""
Peter hesitated.
Then he said, "A woman named Eleanor Brooks.""
The same name from the storage unit.
Daniel opened the document from the previous day.
"Eleanor Brooks was listed as the person responsible for the second placement.""
Peter nodded.
"She was a nurse who knew William Whitaker. She helped arrange the adoption.""
I stared at him.
"Where is she now?""
Peter shook his head.
"Dead.""
Olivia closed her eyes.
"Of course.""
Peter looked at us.
"But there's something you should know about Ethan.""
I turned toward him.
"What?""
"He wasn't adopted by strangers.""
I frowned.
"Then who raised him?""
Peter looked directly at me.
"Your father.""
The words hit like a physical blow.
I couldn't breathe.
"What?""
"Richard arranged for Ethan to live with a family friend. But he paid for his education, his medical expenses, and his upbringing.""
Olivia stared at him.
"Why would he do that?""
Peter looked at the floor.
"Because Ethan was the only child Richard believed could eventually help him regain access to the Whitaker family.""
Daniel frowned.
"Explain.""
Peter continued.
"William Whitaker never trusted Richard. But he believed the third child might be raised with the Whitaker family name and values. Richard promised that Ethan would grow up knowing his biological heritage.""
I looked at Nathan.
"Did Ethan know?""
Peter shook his head.
"I don't think so.""
"Then why keep him?""
Peter's voice became quieter.
"Because Richard believed that if Ethan eventually inherited the Whitaker estate, he could influence him.""
Daniel leaned back.
"That is an extraordinary allegation.""
Peter opened his briefcase again.
This time, he removed a photograph.
It showed a young man in his late twenties.
Dark hair.
Green eyes.
A familiar smile.
I stared.
There was something about his face.
Something I recognized immediately.
"Who is that?""
Peter answered.
"Ethan Brooks. He's thirty years old now.""
Daniel took the photograph.
"Where was this taken?""
"At Richard's company headquarters.""
I felt cold.
"Why would he be at Dad's company?""
Peter looked at me.
"Because he's been working for Richard for almost five years.""
My mouth fell open.
Five years.
That meant the third sibling had been living somewhere close to our family.
He might have attended family events.
He might have passed me in a hallway.
He might have been standing behind my father at the wedding.
"Does he know about us?""
Peter shook his head.
"No.""
Olivia looked furious.
"Richard has kept three siblings apart for thirty years?""
Peter nodded.
"Yes.""
I looked at the photograph again.
Then I noticed something.
The young man was wearing a silver watch.
I recognized it.
It had belonged to my grandmother.
She had worn it for years before giving it away shortly before her death.
I looked at Peter.
"Where did he get that watch?""
Peter hesitated.
"Richard gave it to him.""
"Why?""
"Because it belonged to your grandmother.""
I stared at the photograph.
Grandma had left me her trust.
She had left Olivia a separate trust.
But somehow, Richard had given our brother her personal watch.
It felt deliberate.
Like a message.
Daniel closed the file.
"We need to locate Ethan immediately.""
Peter nodded.
"There's something else. Richard has already arranged a meeting with him.""
"When?""
"Tonight.""
I looked at Nathan.
"Where?""
Peter took a folded sheet from his briefcase.
It contained the address of a private club.
And beneath it was a handwritten note.
Richard intends to tell Ethan that Emma and Olivia are trying to destroy his future inheritance.
I felt my stomach tighten.
"He's going to turn our brother against us before we even meet him.""
Nathan stood.
"Then we get there first.""
Daniel checked his watch.
"We have less than three hours.""
Olivia looked at me.
For the first time since we had met, I saw fear in her eyes.
"What if he believes Richard?""
I squeezed her hand.
"Then we'll tell him the truth.""
But as we prepared to leave, Daniel's phone rang.
He answered.
His expression changed immediately.
"What?""
He listened.
Then he slowly lowered the phone.
"Emma, there's a problem.""
"What?""
"The private club has just reported an incident.""
"What kind of incident?""
Daniel swallowed.
"Ethan Brooks was found unconscious in the parking garage.""
I felt my heart stop.
"Is he alive?""
"Yes. He's been taken to the hospital.""
Nathan grabbed his keys.
Daniel looked at me.
"And the police found something beside him.""
"What?""
"A photograph of you and Olivia.""
I stared.
"Who put it there?""
Daniel turned the phone around.
There was a handwritten message on the back of the photograph.
*THE WHITAKER CHILDREN SHOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN BORN.*
May you like
And beneath it was a signature.
Richard Hale.
