Chapter 9: The Battle Beyond Family

The first thing I did was secure everything.

No emotional decisions.

No angry reactions.

No public accusations.

That was exactly what Richard wanted.

He wanted me to lose control.

So I did the opposite.

I became more careful than ever.

By Monday morning, my legal team had frozen suspicious transactions.

Our security team had restricted access.

Every executive was reviewed.

And Mark Collins was placed on administrative leave pending investigation.

But the hardest part wasn't business.

It was family.

Because my parents still didn't understand.

My mother called that afternoon.

"Claire, what is happening?""

I looked at the files on my desk.

"What do you mean?""

"Your brother says there are problems.""

I almost laughed.

"My brother finally told you something?""

She became quiet.

"Claire...""

"Did he tell you about Richard?""

"What about him?""

I realized.

They didn't know.

Julian had hidden the truth from them.

"Mom, your son wasn't just planning a wedding.""

I explained everything.

The company.

The documents.

The betrayal.

The silence afterward was painful.

Finally, she whispered:

"I didn't know.""

I believed her.

But that didn't erase everything.

"You knew enough to believe him over me.""

She started crying.

"I was wrong.""

Those words were difficult to hear.

Not because they fixed anything.

Because they came too late.

That evening, I received an invitation.

Not from family.

From Richard Whitmore.

A business meeting.

I almost ignored it.

Then Victoria said something important.

"Sometimes people reveal themselves when they think they are winning.""

So I went.

The meeting was at an expensive restaurant downtown.

Richard was already seated.

He smiled when he saw me.

"Claire.""

I sat across from him.

"Richard.""

He looked relaxed.

Too relaxed.

"I imagine you're angry.""

I didn't respond.

He continued.

"But anger doesn't build companies.""

I smiled slightly.

"And betrayal doesn't build relationships.""

His expression changed for half a second.

Then he recovered.

"I think there has been a misunderstanding.""

"No.""

I looked directly at him.

"There hasn't.""

He leaned back.

"You are young. Successful. Emotional.""

There it was.

The assumption.

That I was too inexperienced.

Too soft.

Too easy to manipulate.

"I built my company from nothing.""

He smiled.

"With help.""

"Yes.""

I nodded.

"With employees. Partners. People who believed in me.""

I paused.

"Not people who tried to steal it.""

His face hardened.

"You should be careful with accusations.""

"I am.""

I placed a folder on the table.

His eyes moved toward it.

Inside were copies of the evidence.

The messages.

The transfers.

The plan.

For the first time, Richard looked uncertain.

"You don't understand what you're doing.""

I looked at him.

"I understand perfectly.""

He lowered his voice.

"You think your company makes you untouchable.""

"No.""

I stood.

"My company taught me something.""

"What?""

"Anyone can smile while standing beside you.""

I picked up my bag.

"But only a few people stay when there is nothing to gain.""

As I walked away, my phone buzzed.

A message from Victoria.

*You need to see this immediately.*

I opened the attachment.

A photograph appeared.

A document.

A transfer agreement.

My heart stopped.

Because it wasn't between Richard and Mark.

It wasn't between Richard and Julian.

It was between Richard...

and my father.

I stared at the screen.

May you like

Then another message appeared.

*Your father signed this three months ago.*
