Chapter 14: The Family That Finally Broke

My father's words stayed with me.

"Our family.""

I sat across from him, waiting.

For years, I thought the worst betrayal was someone wanting my money.

I was wrong.

Money was only the surface.

The real damage came from believing people loved me while they were planning around me.

"What does that mean?"" I asked.

My father looked older than I had ever seen him.

"Richard and I knew each other years ago.""

"How?""

"Business.""

I waited.

"We worked on a project together.""

I frowned.

"And?""

"It failed.""

He looked down.

"I lost everything.""

I was quiet.

"Richard blamed me.""

"So he spent years planning revenge?""

My father nodded slowly.

"Partly.""

"Partly?""

He took a deep breath.

"He believed your success should have belonged to him.""

I almost couldn't believe it.

"My success?""

"He helped me during difficult years. He thought that gave him ownership over our family's future.""

I stood.

"He thought he owned me?""

My father didn't answer.

Because that was exactly the truth.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

He looked ashamed.

"Because I was embarrassed.""

I laughed sadly.

"You were embarrassed?""

He nodded.

"I failed. I needed help. And when Richard came back, I thought maybe working with him could fix things.""

I stared at him.

"You sacrificed me to fix your mistake.""

His eyes filled with tears.

"I was wrong.""

For once, I believed him.

But understanding someone's reason didn't erase what they did.

"I need you to understand something, Dad.""

He looked up.

"I don't hate you.""

His face changed.

"But I don't trust you.""

That hurt him.

I could see it.

But some wounds needed honesty.

Not comfort.

The legal battle moved quickly after that.

With the evidence from Mark and Andrew, Richard's claims started collapsing.

His lawyers tried to argue that he had legitimate business interests.

But the documents told another story.

He wasn't investing.

He was planning control.

A week later, Richard requested a private meeting.

Victoria advised against it.

"He may be trying to manipulate you.""

"I know.""

"Then why go?""

I looked at the invitation.

"Because I want him to hear the answer directly from me.""

The meeting was held in a quiet office downtown.

Richard looked different.

Less confident.

More frustrated.

"You've made things difficult.""

I sat across from him.

"You mean impossible.""

He smiled slightly.

"You think this is over?""

"I know it is.""

He shook his head.

"You still don't understand power.""

I looked at him.

"No.""

I smiled.

"You don't understand people.""

His expression changed.

"You had everyone around you.""

I continued.

"And you still lost.""

He leaned forward.

"You think your brother betrayed you because he was weak?""

I stayed silent.

"He betrayed you because he was desperate.""

I didn't react.

"He thought he could become someone important.""

Richard smiled.

"That's why people like me win.""

I looked at him.

"People like you?""

"People who understand ambition.""

I shook my head.

"No.""

I stood.

"People who mistake greed for ambition.""

For the first time, Richard looked angry.

Before I left, he said:

"You'll regret destroying your own family.""

I turned around.

"My family wasn't destroyed when I stood up.""

I paused.

"It was destroyed when they decided I was only valuable when I was useful.""

The next morning, something unexpected happened.

Julian arrived at my office.

But this time, he wasn't asking for help.

He handed me an envelope.

"What is this?""

"My confession.""

I frowned.

"Julian.""

"I need to take responsibility.""

Inside was a signed statement.

Everything he did.

Everything he knew.

Every conversation with Richard.

I looked at him.

"You don't have to do this.""

"I do.""

He swallowed.

"I spent my whole life wanting people to see me.""

A sad smile appeared.

"And I became someone I wouldn't even respect.""

I didn't know what to say.

Then he asked:

"Do you think someday you can forgive me?""

I looked at my brother.

The boy who used to protect me.

The man who hurt me.

"I don't know.""

He nodded.

"That's fair.""

And for the first time in months, I saw something I hadn't seen from my family.

Accountability.

That evening, Victoria called with the final update.

"Claire.""

"What happened?""

"The investigation is complete.""

"And?""

She paused.

"Richard is finished.""

I exhaled.

But before I could respond, she added:

"There is one more thing.""

"What?""

"The board wants to discuss your future.""

I frowned.

"My future?""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

Victoria smiled.

"Because after everything that happened, they want to know one thing.""

May you like

"What?""

"Whether you still want to lead.""
