Chapter 11: The Brother’s Final Choice

I couldn't understand.

After everything.

After the lies.

After the wedding.

After the contract.

Why would Julian be involved again?

I called him immediately.

He answered quickly.

"Claire.""

"Where are you?""

Silence.

That was enough.

"Julian.""

"I'm at home.""

"Then tell me why Mark sent files to you.""

Another pause.

This time longer.

"I can explain.""

I closed my eyes.

That sentence again.

Everyone had explanations.

Nobody had answers.

"Come to my office.""

"Claire...""

"Now.""

An hour later, Julian sat across from me.

He looked exhausted.

Not like the confident groom from weeks ago.

Not like the brother who thought he could control everything.

Just tired.

"Tell me the truth.""

He nodded.

"I found out Mark was involved before.""

"When?""

"After I talked to you.""

"Then why didn't you tell me?""

He looked down.

"Because I was scared.""

I laughed once.

"Of what?""

"Of what would happen when you knew everything.""

I stared at him.

"You mean what would happen when I knew you were part of it.""

His face tightened.

"I was trying to fix it.""

"By hiding it?""

He had no answer.

Julian reached into his jacket and placed a small drive on the desk.

"What is this?""

"Everything Mark sent me.""

I didn't touch it.

"Why did he send it to you?""

"Because Richard thought I was still on their side.""

That surprised me.

Julian continued.

"They didn't trust me after I started helping you.""

I studied his face.

"You were helping me?""

He nodded.

"I was.""

"Why?""

His eyes became red.

"Because I finally understood what I did.""

I looked away.

Part of me wanted to believe him.

Another part remembered the pain.

"Julian, you don't get to hurt me and then become the hero because you regret it.""

"I know.""

His voice was quiet.

"I know I don't deserve forgiveness.""

For the first time, he didn't ask for it.

That mattered.

I picked up the drive.

"What's on this?""

"Proof.""

"Proof of what?""

"That Richard and Mark planned everything.""

I looked at him.

"Everything?""

He nodded.

"The wedding. The contract. The company takeover.""

I inserted the drive into my computer.

Files appeared.

Emails.

Recordings.

Financial documents.

Then I saw something.

A folder labeled:

*Bennett Acquisition Plan*

My hands tightened.

I opened it.

Inside were details about my company.

Employee information.

Investor relationships.

Future expansion plans.

Everything.

Then I found the final document.

A takeover proposal.

The buyer?

A company connected to Richard Whitmore.

The estimated value was enormous.

They weren't trying to help my company.

They were trying to steal it.

Julian watched me.

"Claire.""

I looked up.

"Why didn't you show me this earlier?""

He swallowed.

"Because I was ashamed.""

I believed him.

But shame didn't undo damage.

"I need to ask you something.""

He nodded.

"Did you ever actually plan to marry Chloe?""

His face changed.

That question hurt him.

"I thought I did.""

"Thought?""

He looked at the floor.

"I realized something.""

"What?""

"Everyone around Chloe loved the life I could pretend to provide.""

I stayed quiet.

"Nobody cared who I really was.""

For the first time, I saw my brother clearly.

Not as the villain.

Not as the victim.

Just as someone who made terrible choices because he wanted approval.

But choices still had consequences.

The next morning, I called an emergency board meeting.

I presented the evidence.

Nobody spoke for several minutes.

Then Daniel looked at me.

"We can protect the company.""

I nodded.

"But we need to act quickly.""

Before the meeting ended, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man's voice came through.

"Claire Bennett.""

"Who is this?""

"You know exactly who this is.""

Richard.

My grip tightened.

"What do you want?""

A quiet laugh.

"You think you won.""

I looked around the boardroom.

At the people standing beside me.

"No.""

I said calmly.

"I think you underestimated me.""

His voice became colder.

"You should ask your brother what he hasn't told you.""

My eyes moved toward Julian.

"What are you talking about?""

Richard said only one sentence.

May you like

Then he hung up.

"Ask him why he was the original person I chose to replace you.""
