Chapter 2: The Contract Nobody Read

I didn't cry after sending "Fine.""

That surprised me.

For years, I thought the day my family betrayed me would break me.

I imagined screaming.

I imagined throwing accusations.

I imagined asking them how they could do this after everything I had done.

But sitting there in that conference room, surrounded by people who had no idea what had happened, I felt something different.

Clarity.

I opened my laptop under the table.

Not my personal email.

Not my bank account.

The wedding folder.

Three months of documents appeared on my screen.

Cedar Grove Estate Agreement.

Catering Contract.

Photography Agreement.

Florist Contract.

Rental Agreement.

Every single one had my name attached.

I clicked the venue agreement.

There it was.

The section Julian never noticed.

The section my father never cared to understand.

*Primary Contract Holder: Claire Bennett.*

I leaned back in my chair.

For the first time that day, I smiled.

Not because I wanted revenge.

Because I finally understood the truth.

They didn't remove me from the wedding.

They removed themselves from the person who made the wedding possible.

After the meeting ended, I went back to my office.

My assistant, Megan, noticed something was wrong.

"Claire?""

I looked up.

"Yes?""

"You've been staring at the same email for ten minutes.""

I closed my laptop.

"Family problem.""

She hesitated.

"Do you need me to clear your afternoon?""

Normally, I would have said no.

Normally, I would have pretended everything was fine.

But something inside me had changed.

"Actually, yes.""

I packed my things and drove straight to Cedar Grove Estate.

The property sat on a hill outside the city, surrounded by tall trees and perfectly maintained gardens.

It was exactly the kind of place Julian wanted.

Elegant.

Expensive.

Impossible to afford without someone else paying.

The wedding coordinator, Rachel, recognized me immediately.

"Claire! Thank goodness you're here.""

She walked toward me carrying a tablet.

"Julian said you would approve the final arrangements today.""

I looked at her.

"He said that?""

Rachel frowned.

"Yes. He told us everything was still moving forward.""

I slowly nodded.

Interesting.

"Rachel, can I ask you something?""

"Of course.""

"Who is listed as the contract holder?""

She looked confused.

"You are.""

The answer came quickly.

"Julian and Chloe are listed as the wedding couple, but all financial responsibility belongs to you.""

I looked around the beautiful estate.

The flowers hadn't arrived yet.

The decorations weren't finished.

But everything was already moving.

Everything was built on my signature.

"Has anyone contacted you about removing me from the event?""

Rachel shook her head.

"No.""

I smiled.

"Good.""

Before I left, Rachel called my name.

"Claire?""

I turned.

"Are you okay?""

That question almost broke me.

Because nobody in my family had asked that.

Not once.

I looked at the woman who barely knew me but somehow cared more than my own relatives.

"I'm fine.""

But this time, I meant something different.

I wasn't fine because nothing hurt.

I was fine because I finally stopped begging people to appreciate me.

That evening, Julian called.

I watched his name appear on my phone.

I let it ring.

Then again.

Then again.

Finally, I answered.

"What do you want?""

There was silence.

Then his annoyed voice came through.

"Wow. So you're really going to act like this?""

I almost laughed.

"Like what?""

"Like you're the victim.""

I looked at the wedding contracts sitting beside me.

"Julian, you told me I wasn't invited to a wedding I paid for.""

"You know why.""

"No. Actually, I don't.""

He lowered his voice.

"Chloe's family is coming. Important people. We can't have someone causing drama.""

I stared at the wall.

Someone.

Not his sister.

Not the person who helped him.

Someone.

"Julian.""

"What?""

"Do you know whose name is on the venue contract?""

He paused.

"What are you talking about?""

I smiled.

"Exactly.""

His voice changed.

"What did you do?""

"Nothing.""

"Claire.""

"Nothing yet.""

The silence became heavier.

Then he said something that told me everything.

"You wouldn't ruin my wedding.""

I looked at the folder.

The same folder I had created.

The same folder they never bothered to read.

And I realized something.

Julian wasn't afraid because he thought I would hurt him.

He was afraid because deep down, he knew I had every right not to save him anymore.

"I'll see you soon," I said.

Then I ended the call.

Ten minutes later, my phone rang again.

This time, it wasn't Julian.

It was Cedar Grove Estate.

I answered.

The coordinator's voice sounded nervous.

"Claire, I'm sorry to bother you, but there is a problem.""

I sat up.

"What happened?""

She hesitated.

"Julian and Chloe just arrived here with a group of people.""

"And?""

Her voice dropped.

"They're asking us to transfer the wedding ownership to them.""

I looked at the contract in front of me.

Then I heard her say the words that changed everything.

"They brought a lawyer.""

I smiled slowly.

Because they had made one mistake.

They thought bringing a lawyer meant they were prepared.

May you like

They didn't know I had already read every line of every contract.

And I knew exactly what their lawyer had missed.
