Chapter 8: The Secret Alexander Buried With His Daughter

The file appeared on the screen.

*VICTORIA VANCE.*

No other words.

No explanation.

Just her name.

And somehow, that was more terrifying than any accusation.

Victoria stared at the monitor inside the vault.

Her own name looked unfamiliar.

Like it belonged to someone else.

Someone she did not know.

Someone whose entire life had been written by another person.

"What is this?""

Her voice was quiet.

Nobody answered.

Daniel continued fighting with the vault controls.

The steel door remained sealed.

The security system ignored every command.

Margaret stepped closer to the screen.

"Open the file.""

Victoria immediately turned.

"No.""

Everyone looked at her.

Lucas noticed first.

"You don't want to know.""

Victoria's eyes hardened.

"Don't pretend you understand me.""

Lucas smiled faintly.

"I understand more than you think.""

"Really?""

She stepped toward him.

"You disappeared.""

A pause.

"You abandoned this family.""

Lucas accepted the accusation.

"Yes.""

"And now you come back pretending to know everything?""

"No.""

His voice became colder.

"I came back because I spent twenty-five years learning everything.""

The words silenced her.

Because there was truth behind them.

Lucas had lost his childhood.

His identity.

His place in the world.

While Victoria had grown up inside the empire.

But now she was discovering something painful.

She had not been the winner.

She had simply been another prisoner.

Margaret looked at the screen.

"Victoria.""

She spoke gently.

"Whatever is in that file, you need to see it.""

Victoria looked at her.

"You don't know that.""

Margaret nodded.

"No.""

A pause.

"But Alexander created this.""

She pointed at the screen.

"Which means he wanted you to find it.""

Victoria looked away.

Her entire life, she had searched for her father's approval.

Even after his death.

Even after everything she learned.

Some part of her still wanted to believe Alexander Vance loved her.

That maybe everything had been a misunderstanding.

That maybe somewhere beneath all the manipulation...

There was still a father who cared.

Daniel finally stopped trying to override the vault.

"The system won't open.""

Lucas looked at the screen.

"Then we have to play the file.""

Victoria stared at him.

"And if I don't?""

Lucas looked at the locked door.

"Then we stay here until the system decides what happens next.""

Nobody liked that answer.

But they had no choice.

Daniel activated the file.

The screen went black.

Then a video appeared.

Alexander Vance.

Not the billionaire.

Not the man seen on magazine covers.

This version looked older.

Tired.

A man carrying the weight of every decision he had ever made.

Victoria's breath caught.

Because she had never seen her father like this.

"Victoria.""

Alexander looked directly into the camera.

"If you are watching this, then I failed.""

The words hurt.

Even though he was gone.

Even though he had caused so much damage.

She still felt them.

"I spent my entire life believing control was the same as protection.""

He looked down.

"I was wrong.""

The video showed Alexander sitting in his private office.

The same office where he had collapsed.

"The Vance family was built on a lie.""

Lucas watched silently.

"Not because we had enemies.""

Alexander continued.

"But because we created them.""

A pause.

"I destroyed people to protect what I built.""

The confession shocked everyone.

Even Daniel.

Alexander continued.

"I told myself it was necessary.""

"I told myself sacrifices had to be made.""

"But eventually...""

His voice became weaker.

"I realized I had become the kind of person I spent my life fighting.""

Victoria looked down.

She had never heard him admit weakness.

Never.

Alexander continued.

"The first person I destroyed was Caroline.""

The room became silent.

"She discovered what I had done.""

A document appeared on the screen.

"Illegal financial agreements.""

"Hidden partnerships.""

"Manipulated acquisitions.""

"Corporate crimes.""

Victoria watched the evidence appear.

Her father.

The legendary businessman.

The man she admired.

Had built his empire through deception.

"Caroline threatened to expose me.""

Alexander continued.

"So I did what powerful people always do when they are afraid.""

A pause.

"I attacked the person telling the truth.""

Margaret closed her eyes.

Lucas looked away.

Alexander continued.

"I convinced everyone Caroline was unstable.""

"I took Amelia away.""

"I erased my own daughter.""

The words filled the vault.

Victoria covered her mouth.

Because hearing him say it made it real.

Her father had destroyed his own family.

Not because he hated them.

Because he wanted control.

Alexander looked directly at the camera.

"But Amelia was not the only child I failed.""

Victoria froze.

The screen changed.

A photograph appeared.

A young Victoria.

A child.

Standing beside Alexander.

Then another photograph.

A hospital record.

Victoria frowned.

"What is that?""

Daniel moved closer.

The document showed a date.

A birth record.

But something was missing.

A name.

Alexander's voice continued.

"Victoria.""

She stared.

"Your mother never told you the truth.""

A pause.

"Because I made sure she couldn't.""

Victoria felt cold.

"What truth?""

Alexander continued.

"When you were born, I believed I had finally created the perfect heir.""

The words sounded disgusting now.

Not loving.

Not proud.

Possessive.

"But then I discovered something.""

The screen changed again.

A DNA report.

Victoria stepped backward.

"No.""

Lucas looked at her.

"What?""

She shook her head.

"I don't want to see this.""

But the video continued.

"Victoria was not born from ambition.""

Alexander's voice broke.

"She was born from my greatest mistake.""

Everyone stared.

The DNA report loaded.

Then another name appeared.

A name Victoria had never seen before.

Daniel looked confused.

Margaret read it aloud.

"Father: Alexander Vance.""

She paused.

"Mother: Caroline Vance.""

The room went silent.

Victoria stared.

"What?""

Lucas looked at the screen.

Then at her.

"No.""

Alexander continued.

"The truth is...""

A long pause.

"Victoria and Amelia were sisters.""

The world stopped.

Victoria could not breathe.

"No.""

Her voice cracked.

"No, that's impossible.""

Alexander continued.

"I hid Amelia because she was the rightful first heir.""

"I protected Victoria because she was the child I believed could continue my legacy.""

Victoria stepped back.

Her entire identity collapsed.

Everything she believed about her place in the family.

Everything.

Lucas stared at her.

"You're Caroline's daughter.""

Victoria looked at him.

"No.""

But she knew.

Somewhere deep inside.

She knew.

That was why Alexander had always treated her differently.

Not because she was special.

Because she was useful.

A replacement.

A second chance.

A way to rewrite his mistakes.

The video continued.

"I separated my children because I believed competition created strength.""

Alexander looked ashamed.

"I was wrong.""

A tear fell from Victoria's eye.

She quickly wiped it away.

She refused to let anyone see.

Even now.

Even after everything.

She was still a Vance.

Alexander continued.

"If Victoria discovers this, she must understand one thing.""

The screen focused on his face.

"She was never the villain of this story.""

Victoria froze.

Nobody expected those words.

"She was my daughter.""

A pause.

"My mistake was making her believe love had to be earned.""

The video ended.

The screen went black.

Nobody spoke.

Not even Victoria.

Because for years, she had believed she was the chosen child.

The favored child.

The one destined to inherit everything.

But the truth was far more painful.

She had not been chosen.

She had been placed in a role.

A role created by a man who wanted to control the future.

Lucas approached slowly.

Victoria looked at him.

"You knew.""

He shook his head.

"No.""

"Then why did you look at me like that?""

Lucas swallowed.

"Because I recognized her.""

Victoria frowned.

"Who?""

"Our mother.""

The answer broke something inside her.

Lucas continued.

"Your eyes.""

Victoria looked away.

"Don't.""

"You have the same eyes as Caroline.""

She closed her eyes.

For years, she had believed Caroline was just another person erased by the family.

An enemy.

A threat.

But she was her mother.

And Caroline had been fighting for her children all along.

A sudden noise interrupted them.

The vault door unlocked.

Everyone turned.

The speakers activated.

Caroline's voice returned.

But this time...

There was no anger.

Only exhaustion.

"Now you understand.""

Victoria looked upward.

"Where are you?""

A long silence.

Then:

"Standing outside the only home I ever had.""

Everyone froze.

Daniel immediately moved toward the door.

The vault opened slowly.

Beyond it stood the library.

Empty.

But on the table outside...

Was a single photograph.

A photograph of two children.

Victoria.

And Amelia.

Together.

Happy.

Before everything was destroyed.

On the back of the photograph, there was a handwritten message.

Victoria picked it up.

Her hands trembled.

Only seven words were written.

*"The truth was never meant to hurt you.""*

Then another line appeared beneath it.

*"It was meant to free you.""*

Victoria stared at the words.

Because for the first time in her life...

May you like

She wondered if the empire she had spent years protecting...

Was the very thing she needed to escape.
