Chapter 1: The House of Shadows

The afternoon sun bled through the arched stained-glass windows of Vance Manor, painting the Italian marble floor with fractured rivers of crimson and gold.

For outsiders, the mansion was a dream carved from stone—a symbol of generations of wealth, influence, and power. Sitting proudly on the cliffs of Newport, Rhode Island, the estate overlooked the Atlantic Ocean like a king watching over his kingdom.

But behind the towering iron gates and perfectly trimmed gardens, Vance Manor had always carried another name among those who truly knew its history.

The House of Shadows.

For over one hundred years, the walls had swallowed secrets no newspaper had ever printed. Families had been destroyed behind those elegant doors. Business partners had disappeared from boardrooms overnight. Inheritance battles had ended with mysterious illnesses and convenient accidents.

The Vance family did not simply inherit money.

They inherited control.

And control was something they protected at any cost.

At the bottom of the grand double staircase stood Victoria Vance.

She looked like she belonged in a portrait hanging inside a museum dedicated to arrogance.

Her emerald-olive satin gown shimmered beneath the sunlight, the expensive silk wrapping around her body like the skin of a dangerous creature. Every movement was calculated. Every glance was designed to remind everyone around her that she was no longer just a member of the Vance family.

She was the owner.

In her right hand, she held a crystal goblet.

The glass was empty.

But the damage had already been done.

A thick, milky residue clung to the edge of the goblet, dripping slowly onto the spotless marble floor beneath her designer heels.

Standing several feet away was Elena Marlowe.

For thirty-two years, Elena had served the Vance family.

She had polished their silverware. Prepared their meals. Remembered every birthday.

Comforted their children when they cried. She had witnessed marriages, divorces, betrayals, and funerals.

She knew every hidden hallway.

Every locked room.

Every secret conversation whispered after midnight.

But loyalty meant nothing inside Vance Manor.

Not when power changed hands.

Her black-and-white housekeeper uniform was soaked completely through. The strange, sticky liquid covered her shoulders and chest, dripping from her gray hair and trembling eyelashes.

The substance burned against her skin.

Her breathing became shallow.

Her hands shook as she leaned against the mahogany staircase railing to keep herself from collapsing.

Victoria slowly walked toward her.

The sound of her heels echoed through the enormous foyer.

Click.

Click.

Click.

Each step felt like a countdown.

"Do you know what your problem is, Elena?"" Victoria asked softly.

Elena looked up.

Her eyes were filled with disbelief.

"I... I don't understand, Mrs. Vance.""

Victoria smiled.

It was not a kind smile.

It was the smile of someone who had already decided another person's fate.

"You spent too many years believing you mattered.""

The words cut deeper than Elena expected.

"I gave this family my entire life.""

Victoria tilted her head.

"And that was your mistake.""

The older woman's lips trembled.

"Mr. Alexander Vance trusted me.""

At the mention of Alexander Vance, something dark flickered across Victoria's expression.

A warning.

A threat.

"Alexander is gone," she whispered.

The entire mansion seemed colder.

The billionaire patriarch who had ruled the Vance empire for decades had died six months earlier.

Officially, his death had been caused by heart complications.

But everyone inside the mansion knew there were unanswered questions.

Victoria stepped closer.

"And now I am the owner of this house.""

She looked Elena directly in the eyes.

"Learn your place.""

The sentence echoed throughout the foyer.

Learn your place.

Those four words had destroyed people before.

Employees who questioned the family vanished from the payroll.

Partners who challenged the Vances lost their companies.

Friends who discovered too much suddenly stopped receiving invitations.

But Elena did something Victoria never expected.

She fought back.

Not with anger.

Not with violence.

With evidence.

Her trembling hand moved slowly toward her apron pocket.

Victoria noticed.

"What are you doing?""

Elena did not answer.

Her fingers wrapped around something hidden inside.

A heavy matte-black walkie-talkie.

Not the kind used by ordinary household staff.

The kind used by security teams.

Victoria's confident expression changed slightly.

Only slightly.

But Elena saw it.

Fear.

For the first time in years, Victoria Vance looked afraid.

Elena pressed the button.

Static exploded through the speaker.

Then came her broken voice.

"Daniel...""

Her throat tightened.

"Daniel, please come down.""

Victoria froze.

The walkie-talkie crackled again.

"Daniel!""

The sound traveled through every corner of the mansion.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then a voice answered.

A man's voice.

Calm.

Confused.

"Elena? What's happening?""

Victoria's face lost color.

Because she knew that voice.

Daniel Cross.

The head of Vance security.

A man who had worked directly under Alexander Vance for fifteen years.

A man who knew every camera angle, every locked drawer, every hidden file.

A man Victoria thought she had already controlled.

"What did you do?"" Victoria whispered.

Elena stared at her.

For the first time that day, the frightened maid looked powerful.

"You should have asked that before you poured poison into my dress.""

Silence.

Complete silence.

Victoria's eyes widened.

"What did you say?""

Elena slowly looked down at the ruined uniform covering her body.

"The liquid wasn't cleaning solution.""

Victoria stepped backward.

The crystal goblet slipped slightly in her hand.

"No.""

Elena's voice became stronger.

"You wanted everyone to believe I accidentally spilled chemicals on myself.""

Victoria stared.

"You wanted me to look like an old servant who made a mistake.""

A tear rolled down Elena's face.

"But you forgot something.""

The walkie-talkie remained active.

Recording everything.

"You forgot the security system at Vance Manor records every conversation.""

Victoria's breathing changed.

Because that was impossible.

The security system had been redesigned after Alexander's death.

Only three people had access.

Victoria.

Daniel.

And Alexander's private attorney.

But Alexander was dead.

Or so everyone believed.

A sudden noise came from upstairs.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Heavy.

Everyone looked toward the staircase.

Daniel Cross appeared.

But he was not alone.

Behind him was a woman holding a black leather folder.

Victoria recognized her immediately.

Her blood turned cold.

"That can't be...""

The woman walked down the stairs.

Older.

Elegant.

Unshaken.

Someone Victoria had spent months trying to erase from existence.

Margaret Hale.

Alexander Vance's personal attorney.

The woman who had prepared his final documents.

The woman who supposedly left Newport the night before his funeral.

The woman who was supposed to be gone forever.

Margaret stopped beside Elena.

Then she looked at Victoria.

"Good afternoon, Victoria.""

Victoria could barely speak.

"You're dead to this family.""

Margaret smiled faintly.

"No.""

She opened the leather folder.

"I was waiting for the right moment to come back.""

The mansion became painfully quiet.

Then Margaret removed a single document.

And placed it on the marble table.

"Your father left instructions.""

Victoria's expression hardened.

"My father is dead.""

"Yes," Margaret replied.

"And before he died, he discovered what you were planning.""

The air disappeared from Victoria's lungs.

Nobody spoke.

Not even the ocean outside seemed to move.

Margaret continued.

"Alexander Vance knew someone inside this house was trying to steal everything from him.""

Victoria clenched her fists.

"You have no proof.""

Margaret looked at the walkie-talkie in Elena's hand.

Then she smiled.

"Actually...""

May you like

She pointed toward the small device.

"We have exactly what we need.""
