Chapter 5: The Brother Who Was Erased

The man standing in the doorway looked like a ghost that had returned to collect a debt.

For years, Victoria Vance had convinced herself that Lucas Vance was nothing more than a painful memory.

A photograph hidden away.

A name never spoken.

A chapter of her childhood that the family had carefully removed from every record.

But now he was standing inside the library of Vance Manor.

Alive.

Older.

Changed.

And carrying the kind of anger that only came from being betrayed by the people who were supposed to protect you.

The storm outside grew louder.

Lightning flashed through the tall windows, briefly illuminating Lucas's face.

Victoria saw the similarities immediately.

The same sharp jawline.

The same cold eyes their father had.

The same presence that made people listen when he entered a room.

But there was something Alexander Vance had never possessed.

Pain.

Lucas had spent years carrying it.

"You're dead.""

Victoria finally spoke.

Her voice was barely audible.

Lucas smiled.

A humorless smile.

"That's what they wanted everyone to believe.""

Nobody moved.

Daniel Cross lowered his weapon slightly but did not put it away.

"Lucas Vance.""

The man looked at him.

"Daniel.""

A strange silence followed.

Because Daniel did not look surprised.

Not completely.

Victoria noticed.

"You knew?""

Daniel hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

Victoria turned toward him.

"You knew he was alive?""

"No.""

The answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

Lucas laughed quietly.

"Daniel always was loyal.""

He walked farther into the room.

"But loyalty is dangerous when the person you serve is hiding the truth from you.""

Victoria's eyes narrowed.

"What do you want?""

Lucas looked around the library.

The same room where their father had made countless decisions.

The same room where their family had celebrated victories.

The same room where secrets had been buried.

"I want what was taken from me.""

Victoria shook her head.

"You have no idea what you're talking about.""

Lucas stopped.

"Really?""

His voice changed.

"You don't remember?""

Victoria looked away.

A mistake.

Lucas noticed.

"Of course you remember.""

Margaret watched the exchange carefully.

"Victoria.""

She turned.

"What?""

"What happened to Lucas?""

Victoria remained silent.

Lucas answered for her.

"She doesn't want to tell you.""

He looked at the others.

"Because the official story is easier.""

He walked toward the table.

"The official story says I died in a car accident when I was sixteen.""

He touched the edge of the old documents.

"But the truth is...""

He looked at Victoria.

"I survived.""

Elena covered her mouth.

"Why would they say you died?""

Lucas laughed softly.

"Because dead people can't inherit.""

The words changed the atmosphere instantly.

Daniel looked at him.

"What are you saying?""

Lucas reached inside his coat.

He removed a small envelope.

"Alexander Vance built his empire around one idea.""

He placed the envelope on the table.

"Control.""

Margaret looked at the envelope.

"What is that?""

"The original inheritance agreement.""

Victoria stared.

"That doesn't exist.""

Lucas smiled.

"Exactly.""

He opened the envelope.

Inside were old documents.

Yellowed with age.

Protected carefully.

"My father created the Vance Foundation before his company became what it is today.""

Daniel examined the papers.

Lucas continued.

"The foundation was supposed to control the family's wealth until all his children reached adulthood.""

Victoria looked confused.

"All his children?""

Lucas looked at her.

"Yes.""

A pause.

"All.""

The word struck her.

Because she understood.

The inheritance was never meant to belong only to her.

The empire she believed was hers...

Never belonged only to her.

"My father removed my name.""

Lucas's voice became colder.

"He erased me.""

Margaret looked at the documents.

"Why?""

Lucas stared at Victoria.

"Ask her.""

Victoria immediately shook her head.

"No.""

"Tell them.""

"I was a child.""

Lucas stepped closer.

"And I was too.""

The room became silent.

For a moment, nobody saw the billionaire daughter.

Nobody saw the powerful woman in designer clothing.

They saw two children trapped inside an old family tragedy.

Lucas looked away.

"Our father was not a good man.""

Victoria's expression changed.

She hated hearing it.

Not because it was false.

Because some part of her knew it was true.

"He raised us to compete.""

Lucas continued.

"He told us only one person could lead the family.""

Daniel listened carefully.

"Alexander made you fight each other?""

Lucas nodded.

"Every day.""

He looked at Victoria.

"He made her believe I was trying to take everything from her.""

Victoria whispered:

"You were.""

Lucas looked at her.

"Because he told me you were trying to destroy me.""

The words hit harder.

Victoria remembered.

The arguments.

The accusations.

The teenage years filled with suspicion.

Their father had created a war between his own children.

And both of them thought they were fighting each other.

When they were actually being controlled.

Margaret looked disturbed.

"Alexander manipulated both of you.""

Lucas smiled bitterly.

"Yes.""

He looked around.

"And he was very good at it.""

Daniel picked up the inheritance documents.

"Why come back now?""

Lucas looked toward the vault.

"Because Alexander finally realized what he created.""

He walked toward the hidden files.

"He spent his entire life controlling people.""

A pause.

"Then he discovered someone had learned from him.""

Everyone became still.

Victoria knew where this was going.

"Who?""

Lucas looked at her.

"You.""

The accusation landed immediately.

Victoria stepped back.

"No.""

Lucas opened another file.

"This is why father recorded that message.""

He removed photographs.

Bank transfers.

Private communications.

Margaret examined them.

Her expression changed.

"What are these?""

Lucas answered.

"Evidence.""

Daniel looked through the papers.

Then froze.

"This account...""

Lucas nodded.

"An offshore account created six months before Alexander died.""

Victoria stared.

"That proves nothing.""

Daniel looked at her.

"Your name is attached.""

The room went silent.

Victoria grabbed the papers.

"No.""

Her eyes moved quickly.

The account.

The transfers.

The signatures.

Everything appeared connected.

But something was wrong.

She knew she had never created those accounts.

She knew she had never authorized those transactions.

"This is fake.""

Lucas watched her carefully.

"That's exactly what I said.""

Victoria looked at him.

"What?""

"When they showed me evidence against me.""

The room became quiet.

Lucas's voice lowered.

"They blamed me for stealing company funds.""

Daniel looked confused.

"Who blamed you?""

Lucas didn't answer immediately.

Then:

"Father.""

Everyone froze.

Alexander Vance.

The man whose recordings had started this investigation.

The man who claimed to expose betrayal.

Had he also destroyed his own son?

Lucas continued.

"He told me I was dangerous.""

"He told me I had become greedy.""

"He told everyone I betrayed the family.""

Victoria stared.

"But why?""

Lucas looked at her.

"Because someone wanted me gone.""

The lights flickered.

Nobody spoke.

Then Margaret slowly asked:

"Who?""

Lucas turned toward the hidden vault.

"The same person who poisoned Elena.""

Victoria's expression hardened.

"You keep saying that.""

Lucas looked at her.

"Because it's true.""

"Then prove it.""

Lucas smiled.

"I can.""

He removed a small device from his pocket.

A flash drive.

"I have the original security footage from the night Alexander died.""

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

"Where did you get that?""

Lucas looked at him.

"From the person who helped me escape.""

Margaret frowned.

"Who?""

Lucas looked toward the doorway.

Nobody was there.

But his answer changed everything.

"Your father.""

Everyone froze.

Daniel stared.

"Alexander helped you?""

Lucas nodded.

"Yes.""

Victoria's face went pale.

"That makes no sense.""

"It does.""

Lucas placed the flash drive on the table.

"Because Alexander discovered the truth too late.""

He looked directly at Victoria.

"He realized he had been protecting the wrong person.""

Victoria's voice became cold.

"You're lying.""

Lucas did not react.

"Maybe.""

He stepped back.

"That's why we should watch the footage.""

Daniel connected the flash drive to the security system.

The screen inside the library turned on.

Everyone gathered around.

The video began.

A hallway.

Vance Manor.

Six months earlier.

The night Alexander supposedly died.

The timestamp appeared.

11:47 PM.

The footage showed Alexander entering his private office.

Alive.

Walking.

Healthy enough to stand.

Then another person entered.

A person everyone recognized.

Victoria stopped breathing.

Because the person on the screen was her.

The recording showed Victoria walking into her father's office.

Then closing the door.

Ten minutes passed.

Twenty.

Thirty.

Then the office door opened again.

Victoria left.

But something was different.

Her hands were shaking.

The video zoomed closer.

In her hand was a small glass bottle.

Daniel looked at Victoria.

She said nothing.

The footage continued.

Then Alexander appeared at the doorway.

He looked weak.

Confused.

He held his chest.

And collapsed.

Elena gasped.

Victoria stared at the screen.

"No.""

Her voice broke.

"No, that's not what happened.""

Lucas watched her.

"Then tell us.""

Victoria looked at everyone.

For the first time that night...

She looked truly afraid.

Because she remembered that night.

But not the way the video showed it.

She remembered entering the office.

She remembered arguing with her father.

She remembered leaving.

But she did not remember poisoning him.

Someone had altered something.

Someone had created a perfect picture of her guilt.

The video stopped.

A new message appeared on the screen.

"FILE CORRUPTED.""

Daniel looked confused.

"What?""

Lucas's expression changed.

"That wasn't supposed to happen.""

Margaret turned toward him.

"You said you had the original.""

"I did.""

"Then why is it corrupted?""

Nobody answered.

Then a sound came from behind them.

A quiet click.

Like someone entering a code.

Everyone turned.

The vault door began closing.

Slowly.

Automatically.

Daniel ran toward it.

Too late.

The heavy steel door slammed shut.

The library lights flickered again.

And from the speakers hidden inside the walls...

A voice appeared.

Not Alexander's.

Not Lucas's.

A new voice.

A woman's voice.

"Congratulations.""

Everyone froze.

The voice continued.

"You found the truth.""

A pause.

"But you found the wrong version.""

Victoria looked around.

"Who are you?""

The woman laughed softly.

"Someone who has been watching the Vance family destroy itself for years.""

The speakers crackled.

Then came the final sentence:

"And now that all of you are trapped together...""

Silence.

"...we can finally finish what Alexander Vance started.""

The room went dark.

May you like

And somewhere inside Vance Manor...

Someone else was smiling.
