Chapter 6: The Day Everything Came To Light

Two days later, everything changed.

I was preparing breakfast when someone knocked on my door.

I expected Terrence.

Instead, I saw two people standing outside.

Lennox.

And a man in a suit I didn’t recognize.

My first instinct was not fear.

It was confusion.

“What is this?””

Lennox smiled.

Not warmly.

Politely.

The kind of smile people use when they believe they have already won.

“Margaret, this is Mr. Collins.””

The man extended his hand.

I didn’t take it.

“Why is he here?””

Lennox tilted her head.

“We need to discuss your situation.””

“My situation?””

“Yes.””

She stepped closer.

“I think you’ve misunderstood everything.””

I almost smiled.

“Have I?””

“Yes.””

She looked toward the house.

“You’re alone here.””

I felt my expression harden.

“I’m not alone. I’m independent.””

Her smile faded slightly.

“We’re family.””

“There’s that word again.””

Mr. Collins cleared his throat.

“Mrs. Harris, we’re simply here to discuss possible financial arrangements that could benefit everyone.””

I stared at him.

Then at Lennox.

“You brought someone to pressure me into giving up my home?””

“No one is pressuring you.””

I looked at her.

“Really?””

She looked away.

That was the first crack.

The first sign she knew exactly what she was doing.

“I think you need to understand,” Lennox said, “that Terrence is struggling.””

“Because of decisions he made.””

“Because life happened.””

“No.””

My voice became firm.

“Because choices happened.””

Mr. Collins looked uncomfortable.

Lennox stepped forward.

“You’re making this impossible.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You’re upset because I’m finally making things possible for myself.””

Her face changed.

The mask disappeared.

“You really think you’re better than us?””

I stared at her.

“No.””

“Then why are you acting like you’re above helping?””

“Because helping and enabling are different things.””

That sentence silenced her.

Then she did something I never expected.

She laughed.

A quiet, cold laugh.

“You really think you’re in control.””

I felt a chill.

“What does that mean?””

She leaned closer.

“It means you don’t know everything.””

Before I could respond, my phone buzzed.

A message.

From Terrence.

Only three words.

“Check your email.””

My heart started racing.

I opened my email.

And what I saw made my hands go cold.

There was a document attached.

A document that revealed Lennox had been hiding something from everyone.

Something about the $620,000.

Something about the house sale.

Something that explained why she was so desperate.

I looked up at her.

For the first time, she looked afraid.

And I realized the truth.

She wasn’t trying to save herself.

She was trying to hide what she had done.

I slowly raised my eyes from the phone.

“Lennox…”

Her face went pale.

“You need to leave.””

The confidence disappeared.

“What?””

“You need to leave my property.””

She stared at me.

Because for the first time…

May you like

She realized I knew.

And whatever secret she had been protecting was about to destroy everything.
