Chapter 10: The Million Dollar Lie

For several minutes after Terrence told me the truth, I couldn’t move.

I sat at my kitchen table, staring at the same spot on the wall, trying to process what I had just heard.

Almost a million dollars.

The number felt unreal.

Too large.

Too impossible.

Only weeks earlier, Terrence and Lennox had arrived at my door carrying expensive luggage and telling me they had lost everything.

They had looked desperate.

They had acted defeated.

They had convinced me they were two people who had made terrible mistakes and needed help getting back on their feet.

But now there was another possibility.

They hadn’t lost everything.

Someone had hidden something.

And that someone was Lennox.

“Tell me exactly what you found,” I said.

Terrence was quiet for a moment.

“I found emails between Lennox and the buyer’s agent.””

“Your house buyer?””

“Yes.””

“And?””

“She negotiated a higher price than what she told me.””

I closed my eyes.

My hands tightened around the phone.

“How much higher?””

“She told me the house sold for $620,000.””

“And the real amount?””

“$940,000.””

The room felt colder.

Almost three hundred thousand dollars.

Gone.

Hidden.

“Are you sure?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“I found the original contract.””

My voice lowered.

“Where?””

“In her old email account.””

I immediately understood.

Lennox hadn’t expected anyone to look.

She believed the truth would stay buried.

“Why would she hide that money?””

Terrence didn’t answer right away.

Then he said something that made my stomach turn.

“Because she was afraid I would take control.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“She always said money gave people power.””

I leaned back.

“So she hid money because she wanted power.””

“Yes.””

The pieces started falling into place.

The designer clothes.

The confidence.

The way she spoke.

The way she treated everyone around her.

Lennox wasn’t just careless with money.

She believed money was a weapon.

And she wanted to be the person holding it.

“Where is the money now?”” I asked.

“That’s what I’m trying to find out.””

The next morning, Terrence came to my house with the documents.

This time, I could see the difference in him.

He wasn’t confused anymore.

He wasn’t making excuses.

He looked like someone who had finally accepted that the person he trusted most had betrayed him.

We sat at the dining table while he spread everything out.

“The sale documents.””

“The bank transfers.””

“Her private account records.””

I looked through the papers.

Every page revealed another layer of deception.

The money from the sale had been divided.

Some went into their shared account.

Some went into Lennox’s private account.

Some was moved through different transfers.

“She planned this,” I whispered.

Terrence looked down.

“I think she did.””

I hated hearing that.

Not because I cared about Lennox.

Because I cared about my son.

I knew what it felt like to realize someone you loved was not who you believed they were.

That kind of pain wasn’t just sadness.

It was the collapse of a future you thought was guaranteed.

“I don’t understand,” Terrence said quietly.

“What?””

“How could I not see it?””

I looked at him.

“Because you wanted to believe the best.””

“That sounds stupid.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“It sounds human.””

He looked at me.

“But I ignored every warning.””

“Yes.””

“And you saw it.””

“I saw something wasn’t right.””

He gave a sad smile.

“You always do.””

I reached across the table.

“Terrence, listening now matters more than ignoring before.””

He nodded.

But before we could continue, my phone rang.

It was Derek.

Lennox’s brother.

I answered.

“Hello?””

“Margaret, you need to know something.””

His voice sounded urgent.

“What happened?””

“My sister knows you found out.””

My heart sank.

“How?””

“I don’t know. But she knows.””

Terrence stood up immediately.

“What did she say?””

I put the phone on speaker.

Derek continued.

“She called me last night.””

“What did she want?””

“She wanted to know if I had told you anything.””

“And?””

“I told her no.””

“Why?””

“Because I wanted to know what she would do.””

A pause.

Then:

“She’s leaving.””

“Leaving where?””

“I don’t know.””

Terrence looked at me.

“Does she have the money?””

Derek was silent.

That silence answered everything.

“Derek?””

“I think so.””

My chest tightened.

“So she lied about everything.””

“Yes.””

“And now she’s running.””

“Yes.””

After the call ended, Terrence paced across the room.

“She’s going to disappear.””

“Maybe.””

“We have to stop her.””

I looked at him.

“We have to be careful.””

“She stole from me.””

“Yes.””

“But—”

“Terrence.””

He stopped.

“Do not let anger make your decisions.””

He looked frustrated.

“I just want justice.””

“And you can get it.””

“But?””

“But justice requires patience.””

That was something I had learned over thirty years.

The loudest person in a conflict was rarely the strongest.

The strongest person was the one who stayed calm.

Later that evening, there was another knock at my door.

This time, it was Lennox.

Alone.

No lawyer.

No confidence.

No attitude.

She looked exhausted.

“Margaret.””

I didn’t invite her inside.

“What do you want?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I need to explain.””

I almost laughed.

“Now?””

She looked down.

“I made mistakes.””

“That’s a very small word for what happened.””

She swallowed.

“I was scared.””

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“Then tell me the truth.””

She looked at me.

For a moment, she said nothing.

Then she whispered:

“The money wasn’t supposed to disappear.””

My expression hardened.

“Where is it?””

She looked away.

And that was when I knew.

She wasn’t there to apologize.

She was there because she needed something.

“Where is the money, Lennox?””

Her voice dropped.

“I invested it.””

“In what?””

She hesitated.

And then she said the words that changed everything.

“A property deal.””

I stared at her.

“What property deal?””

She looked terrified.

“One that went wrong.””

I felt my anger rising.

“You mean you lost it?””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“I mean someone else took it.””

The answer made no sense.

“What are you talking about?””

She looked directly at me.

“The person who bought our house wasn’t just a buyer.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who were they?””

May you like

Her voice became barely audible.

“My business partner.””
