Chapter 11: The Enemy Behind The Curtain

I didn’t sleep that night.

Not because I was afraid.

Because there were too many unanswered questions.

For weeks, I had believed the story was simple.

My son and his wife had spent their money irresponsibly.

They lost everything.

They came to me because they had nowhere else to go.

But the truth was much more complicated.

The money wasn’t simply gone.

It had been moved.

Hidden.

Invested.

And apparently taken by someone Lennox trusted.

The next morning, Terrence arrived early.

“I talked to Lennox.””

I looked up.

“What did she say?””

“She told me about the property deal.””

I waited.

“She says she was trying to create a bigger investment.””

“Of course she was.””

He sighed.

“I know how it sounds.””

“It sounds like another excuse.””

He nodded.

“I thought the same thing.””

That surprised me.

“You believed her?””

“No.””

He sat down.

“But then she showed me something.””

“What?””

“A contract.””

He placed a folder on the table.

I opened it.

The documents were complicated, but one thing stood out.

A company name.

A company connected to Lennox.

And another name.

Her business partner.

I looked at Terrence.

“Who is this?””

He hesitated.

“That’s the person who bought our house.””

I stared at the page.

“So Lennox sold the house to someone she was working with?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“She said it was part of a bigger plan.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Terrence looked at me.

“What?””

“She didn’t sell the house.””

He frowned.

“What do you mean?””

“She transferred an asset.””

The realization hit both of us at the same time.

The house sale wasn’t just a sale.

It was part of a financial arrangement.

A way to move money.

A way to hide ownership.

A way to make it appear like the money was gone.

Terrence stood up.

“So she planned this?””

“I don’t know.””

“But?””

“But she was much more involved than she admitted.””

That afternoon, we met with the attorney again.

He reviewed the documents carefully.

After nearly an hour, he looked up.

“There are several concerning issues here.””

“What kind?””

“The transaction appears unusual.””

“How?””

“The buyer and seller had a previous financial relationship.””

Terrence clenched his jaw.

“So what does that mean?””

“It means we need more information.””

“Could she have hidden assets?””

The attorney looked at him carefully.

“Yes.””

The word was quiet.

But powerful.

Terrence looked devastated.

Not angry.

Destroyed.

Because now he wasn’t just dealing with a failed marriage.

He was dealing with the possibility that his entire relationship had been built on lies.

When we left, Terrence barely spoke.

Finally, he said:

“I loved someone who didn’t exist.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

He looked surprised.

“You loved someone who showed you only the parts she wanted you to see.””

He looked down.

“That feels worse.””

Maybe it did.

Because betrayal hurts most when it comes from someone who knows exactly where your heart is.

That evening, I received a message from Lennox.

“I need to tell you the truth before it’s too late.””

I stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

“I was trying to protect myself.””

Then another.

“But I made a mistake.””

I almost ignored her.

But something stopped me.

I replied:

“Come tomorrow. Tell the whole truth.””

The next day, Lennox arrived.

She looked nothing like the woman who had walked into my house weeks earlier.

The confidence was gone.

The perfect image was gone.

She looked scared.

“I know you hate me.””

I shook my head.

“Hate takes too much energy.””

She looked down.

“I made terrible choices.””

“Yes.””

“But I never wanted things to become this bad.””

I remained silent.

She took a deep breath.

“The person who bought our house convinced me to invest with him.””

“Why?””

“He promised a huge return.””

“And you believed him?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She looked embarrassed.

“Because I wanted to prove everyone wrong.””

There it was.

The truth.

Not about money.

About pride.

She wanted success more than she wanted security.

“I thought if I became wealthy enough, nobody could look down on me.””

I looked at her.

“And now?””

“Now I lost everything.””

I studied her.

“Did you?””

Her eyes lifted.

“What?””

“You came here saying you lost everything.””

She became quiet.

I continued.

“But you still haven’t told me where the remaining money went.””

Her face changed.

Fear.

Again.

“What are you hiding?””

She looked away.

And I knew.

There was still another secret.

“I can’t.””

“You can.””

“No.””

“Why?””

Her voice trembled.

“Because if I tell you, everything will collapse.””

I leaned forward.

“Lennox.””

She looked at me.

“Everything has already collapsed.””

The tears finally came.

And then she whispered:

“The money isn’t gone.””

My heart stopped.

“Where is it?””

She looked terrified.

“Hidden.””

“Where?””

May you like

She took a shaky breath.

“In your name.””
