Chapter 12: The Name On The Account
For several seconds, I didn’t understand what Lennox had said.
I thought I had misunderstood.
“What did you just say?””
Her eyes filled with panic.
“The money is connected to you.””
I stared at her.
“That makes no sense.””
“I know.””
“Explain.””
She looked around my living room.
The same room where she had demanded help.
The same room where she had tried to intimidate me.
Now she looked like someone who needed protection.
“I never intended for this to happen.””
“That sentence usually comes before someone explains exactly how it happened.””
She closed her eyes.
“The investment required another person’s name.””
I felt uneasy.
“Whose name?””
She didn’t answer.
I already knew.
Mine.
“No.””
She quickly shook her head.
“Not directly.””
“Then explain.””
She took out a folder.
My stomach tightened.
“What is that?””
“The reason I came here.””
I opened it.
Inside were documents.
Financial documents.
And near the bottom of one page was a familiar name.
Mine.
My hands went cold.
“Why is my name here?””
“Because your house was used as part of the agreement.””
I looked at her.
“You told me you wanted to borrow against my house.””
She nodded.
“But I didn’t.””
My anger rose.
“Then what did you do?””
“I used the information.””
“What information?””
“Your property records.””
I stood up.
“You looked into my home.””
“Yes.””
“And used that information?””
“Yes.””
I could barely believe what I was hearing.
“You crossed every boundary.””
“I know.””
“No, Lennox. I don’t think you do.””
She started crying.
“I was desperate.””
“Desperation does not excuse this.””
“I know.””
For once, she didn’t argue.
That almost made it worse.
Because it meant she finally understood.
Terrence arrived while we were still talking.
The moment he saw the documents, he knew something was wrong.
“What happened?””
I handed him the papers.
He read them.
His face slowly changed.
“What did you do?””
Lennox looked at him.
“Terrence…”
“What did you do?””
Her voice became small.
“I made a mistake.””
He laughed bitterly.
“A mistake?””
He looked at the papers.
“You used my mother’s information.””
“I was trying to fix everything.””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“You were trying to save yourself.””
The room became silent.
For the first time, Lennox had no defense.
No argument.
No explanation.
Only the truth.
Later that day, the attorney confirmed what we feared.
Lennox had created a financial arrangement using information connected to my property.
She had not legally taken my house.
But she had placed my personal information dangerously close to a financial scheme.
And now, we needed to know who else was involved.
Because there was one question nobody could answer.
Who had helped her?
That evening, Terrence and I sat together quietly.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at him.
“You’ve said that many times.””
“I know.””
“But this time?””
“This time I mean it differently.””
I waited.
“I’m sorry I didn’t protect you when I should have.””
My heart softened.
Because that was the apology I had needed.
Not for money.
Not for the house.
For the feeling that I had been abandoned.
“You’re my son,” I said.
“I know.””
“And I love you.””
His eyes filled.
“But love doesn’t mean pretending nothing happened.””
“I know.””
We sat there in silence.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A man’s voice responded.
“Is this Margaret Harris?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Victor Hale.””
I froze.
The name sounded familiar.
“Why are you calling me?””
A pause.
Then:
“Because your son and daughter-in-law are looking for the wrong person to blame.””
My grip tightened.
“What does that mean?””
The man’s voice became serious.
“It means Lennox didn’t lose the money.””
I looked at Terrence.
“She gave it away.””
The room went silent.
“Who are you?””
His answer changed everything.
“I’m the person who warned her not to trust the man she invested with.””
I felt a chill.
“What man?””
Victor paused.
Then said:
“The same man who bought your son’s house.””
The same person.
The buyer.
The business partner.
The person behind the entire mess.
And suddenly, I realized something.
Lennox wasn’t the only person who had been hiding the truth.
Someone else had been watching.
May you like
Someone else had been waiting.
And that person was finally ready to tell us why.
