Chapter 8: The Truth Beneath the Accident
The building looked abandoned.
That was the first thing I noticed.
A small house at the edge of a quiet road.
No guards.
No cameras.
No obvious protection.
Which meant there was probably more security than I could see.
People like Adrian Vale didn’t survive twenty years by being careless.
I stepped out of the car.
Marco followed.
“You sure about this?””
I looked at the house.
“No.””
He almost smiled.
“That’s the first honest answer you’ve given me all day.””
I ignored him.
We approached the front door.
Before we reached it, it opened.
And there he was.
Older.
Gray hair.
A face marked by time.
But the eyes were the same.
Adrian Vale.
He looked at me for a long moment.
Then he said:
“You have your father’s anger.””
I stared at him.
“And you have his habit of disappearing.””
Adrian nodded slowly.
“I deserved that.””
“You deserved much worse.””
He looked past me.
“At least you came alone.””
I glanced at Marco.
Adrian smiled faintly.
“You never were alone.””
I stepped inside.
The house was simple.
Too simple.
No luxury.
No evidence of wealth.
Just someone hiding.
“Where is my mother?””
Adrian looked away.
“She’s resting.””
“Alive?””
“Yes.””
The answer should have made me happy.
Instead, it made me angry.
“You let me believe she was dead.””
His face changed.
“I didn’t.””
“Then who did?””
Silence.
That silence told me everything.
Someone had built my entire life on a lie.
“Tell me the truth.””
Adrian sat down.
“You need to hear the whole story.””
“I don’t have time.””
“You have more time than you think.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What does that mean?””
Adrian looked at me.
“The accident was never about killing you.””
“I heard that already.””
“Then listen carefully.””
He leaned forward.
“Your father knew someone inside the family was planning a takeover.””
“Lorenzo.””
“No.””
The answer surprised me.
“Lorenzo was angry. Greedy. Dangerous.””
Adrian paused.
“But he wasn’t the mastermind.””
My stomach dropped.
“Who was?””
Adrian looked toward the window.
“The person who benefited the most from your father’s death.””
I waited.
He didn’t speak.
“Say the name.””
Adrian looked at me.
“Vincent…”
His voice became quieter.
“You.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
“Your father knew that if you inherited everything immediately, you would become a target.””
“So he faked my mother’s death?””
“He hid her.””
“He hid himself.””
“He hid the truth.””
My anger grew.
“He manipulated my entire life.””
Adrian shook his head.
“No. He protected it.””
I laughed.
“Protection doesn’t look like betrayal.””
Adrian looked at me.
“You were twenty years old. Hot-headed. Angry. You wanted revenge against anyone who crossed your family.””
I didn’t answer.
Because it was true.
“You would have walked into a war without knowing who was standing behind the enemy.””
“And now?””
“Now you’re different.””
I thought about Sophia.
The wheelchair.
Vanessa.
The poison.
“I became different because someone tried to destroy me.””
Adrian nodded.
“Exactly.””
A door opened behind us.
I turned.
A woman stepped into the room.
My breath stopped.
Because even after fifteen years…
I knew her.
“Mom?””
Tears filled her eyes.
“Vincent.””
I couldn’t move.
The woman I buried was standing in front of me.
Alive.
She reached for me.
But I stepped back.
“Why?””
The pain in her face was real.
“We were trying to save you.””
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“You let me mourn you.””
“I know.””
“You let me think I lost everything.””
She cried silently.
“I had to.””
“Why?””
My mother looked at Adrian.
Then back at me.
“Because the person who ordered your father’s death…”
She stopped.
My heart raced.
“Who?””
Her voice trembled.
“It was someone in this house.””
I felt the blood leave my face.
“Who?””
May you like
My mother whispered:
“Someone who has been close to you since the day you were born.””
