Chapter 7: The Ghost From My Father’s Past

I stared at the photograph until my eyes burned.

My father.

Alive.

Standing in a place I didn’t recognize.

And beside him…

A man I thought had vanished from our family history.

Adrian Vale.

The name alone carried weight.

Twenty years ago, Adrian was my father’s closest friend. He wasn’t a blood relative, but he was treated like family. He sat at our dinner table.

He attended every important event. He was the man my father trusted when nobody else could be trusted.

Then one night, Adrian disappeared.

The official story was simple.

He had betrayed my father and fled.

But my father never spoke about it again.

Not even to me.

I always assumed it was because the wound was too deep.

Now I wondered if the truth was much worse.

Marco returned to the room.

“What happened?””

I handed him the phone.

His expression changed immediately.

“Who is this?””

“Adrian Vale.””

Marco looked at me.

“Boss…”

“I know.””

“You’re sure?””

“I know his face.””

Marco studied the picture.

“Everyone believed he was dead.””

“So did I.””

The silence that followed was heavy.

Then Marco asked the question I had been avoiding.

“Why would your father hide this from you?””

I looked toward Sophia’s room.

Because that was the question haunting me.

My father loved me.

I knew that.

But love and honesty were not always the same thing.

Sometimes people hid the truth because they believed they were protecting you.

And sometimes they hid it because the truth would destroy everything.

“I need to find Adrian,” I said.

Marco nodded.

“We’ll start looking.””

“No.””

He stopped.

“This stays between us.””

“Boss, if Adrian is alive—”

“I know exactly how dangerous that is.””

I lowered my voice.

“If Lorenzo knows Adrian is alive, then everything we thought we understood is wrong.””

Marco nodded.

Then he handed me another file.

“What about Vanessa?””

I opened it.

Inside were more documents.

Her childhood records.

Her family history.

Bank accounts.

Connections.

“She wasn’t random,” Marco said.

I looked through the pages.

“She was chosen.””

“Yes.””

My stomach tightened.

Someone had placed Vanessa in my life.

Someone had planned everything.

But why?

To kill me?

To control me?

Or something bigger?

That night, I couldn’t sleep.

I sat beside Sophia’s bed and watched her breathe.

She looked peaceful.

Too peaceful for a child who had spent months carrying a secret alone.

I gently touched her hair.

“Daddy?””

Her eyes opened.

“I thought you were asleep.””

She shook her head.

“Are you leaving?””

The question hit me.

“No.””

“People always leave.””

I sat down beside her.

“Who told you that?””

She shrugged.

“Mommy said after the accident, you might not be the same anymore.””

My jaw tightened.

Vanessa had been preparing her.

Making her believe I was already gone.

“Sophia.””

She looked at me.

“You’re the strongest person in this house.””

She smiled slightly.

“I’m only six.””

“I know.””

I kissed her forehead.

“That’s why I’m proud of you.””

A few hours later, Marco called.

I answered immediately.

“What did you find?””

His voice was tense.

“We found Adrian.””

I stood.

“Where?””

“New Jersey.””

“Is he alone?””

A pause.

“No.””

Something in his voice changed.

“Who is with him?””

Marco answered quietly.

“Your mother.””

I froze.

My mother.

A woman I buried fifteen years ago.

A woman I watched leave this world.

Impossible.

“That’s not possible.””

“I thought the same thing.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“Send me the location.””

“Boss, wait.””

“What?””

Marco hesitated.

“You need to understand something.””

“What?””

“We found them because they wanted us to.””

I looked at the photograph again.

My father.

Adrian.

My mother.

All alive in the same secret world I never knew existed.

May you like

Then Marco said the words that changed everything.

“They’ve been watching you since the accident.””
