Chapter 2: The Woman Behind the Smile
I didn’t move.
Not because I couldn’t.
Because I was calculating.
A lifetime in my world taught me one thing: the most dangerous people were not the ones who showed their anger.
They were the ones who smiled while they planned your downfall.
Vanessa slowly stood up.
“What is it?”” she asked.
I locked my phone.
“Business.””
She studied my face.
I knew she noticed something was different.
For months, I had played the role of a broken man. A husband who needed help. A father who depended on others to survive.
But now she had seen something in my eyes.
The man she thought was gone.
The man she thought she had trapped.
“I’m going to take Sophia downstairs,” Vanessa said.
“No.””
The word came out sharper than I intended.
She froze.
I looked at my daughter.
“Sophia stays with me.””
Vanessa forced a smile.
“Vincent, she’s upset. She needs space.””
“My daughter stays with me.””
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Vanessa nodded.
“Of course.””
But her voice carried no kindness.
After she left the room, I waited until the door closed.
Then I stood.
Sophia gasped.
“Daddy?””
I walked slowly toward her.
Her eyes widened.
“You can walk?””
I knelt down and hugged her.
“Yes, princess.””
“Why didn’t you tell anyone?””
Because I wanted to find the truth.
Because I wanted to know who would stay when they thought I had nothing left.
But I couldn’t say that to a six-year-old.
“I needed to know who was honest with me,” I whispered.
Sophia wiped her tears.
“I tried to tell you.””
“I know.””
“She said nobody would believe me.””
I felt a pain deeper than any injury.
“Tell me everything.””
Sophia looked toward the door.
“She comes into your room every morning before breakfast. She puts something in your juice.””
“How long?””
“Since you came home from the hospital.””
I closed my eyes.
Almost three months.
Three months of trusting the wrong person.
My phone rang again.
This time it was Marco, my most loyal lieutenant.
I answered.
“Talk.””
“Boss, we checked the pill.””
My jaw tightened.
“And?””
A pause.
Then Marco lowered his voice.
“It’s not a sleeping medication.””
I looked at Sophia.
“What is it?””
“We’re still testing it, but it appears to be something designed to weaken your body over time.””
The room became silent.
Someone wasn’t trying to kill me quickly.
They were trying to make me disappear slowly.
“Find out who gave it to her,” I said.
“Already working on it.””
I ended the call.
Sophia looked at me.
“Daddy, are we safe?””
I wanted to tell her yes.
I wanted to promise that everything would be okay.
But promises were dangerous things.
Especially in my world.
“We will be.””
A few hours later, I watched Vanessa from the security cameras in my office.
She walked into the kitchen.
She thought nobody was watching.
She pulled out her phone.
“Why are you calling me?”” she whispered.
I turned up the volume.
A man’s voice answered.
And the moment I heard it, my entire body went still.
“Because you’re taking too long, Vanessa.””
My fingers tightened around the chair.
I knew that voice.
A voice from my past.
A voice belonging to someone who had every reason to want me gone.
Vanessa looked around nervously.
“He’s suspicious.””
The man laughed.
“Then finish what you started.””
My breathing slowed.
I leaned closer to the screen.
Vanessa whispered:
“What if he finds out?””
The man answered:
“He won’t.””
Then he said my father’s name.
A name that had not been spoken inside my house for years.
A name connected to the darkest betrayal my family had ever suffered.

And suddenly, I realized Vanessa wasn’t just trying to hurt me.
She was part of something much bigger.
