Chapter 11: The Secret My Father Died Protecting
The drive home felt endless.
Daniel sat across from me in the back seat.
A man I wanted to hate.
A man I still needed.
That was the worst part.
Because sometimes the truth was more complicated than revenge.
“Start talking,” I said.
Daniel looked out the window.
“Your father knew there was a threat before his death.””
“I know.””
“No. You know pieces.””
He looked at me.
“You don’t know the reason.””
I waited.
“Your father discovered a hidden network inside the family. Not just criminals. Not just business rivals.””
“What kind of network?””
“One built around controlling information.””
I frowned.
“Information?””
Daniel nodded.
“Secrets. Records. Names. Evidence.””
“And Sophia?””
He took a breath.
“When your daughter was born, your father discovered something.””
“What?””
Daniel looked at me.
“She inherited something.””
I stared at him.
“Money?””
“No.””
“Then what?””
“Knowledge.””
I almost laughed.
“That makes no sense.””
Daniel pulled out a small folder.
Inside was an old photograph.
Sophia as a baby.
My father holding her.
On the back was a handwritten note.
*She is the future. Protect her at all costs.*
I looked at Daniel.
“What did he mean?””
Daniel’s voice lowered.
“Your father discovered that Sophia’s mother had uncovered information about the organization behind the family.””
I froze.
“My first wife?””
“Yes.””
The room went silent.
“My wife knew?””
“She was investigating.””
I remembered.
The late nights.
The phone calls she refused to explain.
The way she became nervous whenever certain names were mentioned.
I thought she was hiding something from me.
Maybe she was trying to protect me.
“What happened to her?””
Daniel looked away.
“You were told it was an accident.””
My chest tightened.
“You’re saying it wasn’t?””
“I’m saying your family has been surrounded by lies for years.””
I closed my eyes.
Too many deaths.
Too many secrets.
Too many people pretending they were protecting me.
My phone rang.
Marco.
I answered.
“Tell me you found Sophia.””
Silence.
That was enough.
My hand tightened.
“Marco.””
“We’re tracking them.””
“Who has her?””
“We don’t know yet.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Guess.””
Daniel’s face became pale.
Then he whispered:
“Vanessa.””
I stood.
“No.””
“She was the easiest person to get close to your daughter.””
“No.””
My voice became dangerous.
Daniel looked at me.
“Vincent…”
I turned away.
Because if Vanessa had taken Sophia, then I had failed.
I had spent months trying to expose betrayal.
And I had missed the only thing that mattered.
My daughter.
Another message appeared on my phone.
A video.
My fingers froze.
I opened it.
Sophia was sitting in a room.
Crying.
But alive.
A woman stood behind her.
Vanessa.
“Daddy!””
Sophia’s voice came through the phone.
I felt something break inside me.
Then Vanessa looked into the camera.
Her face was different.
No kindness.
No fear.
Only desperation.
“Vincent.””
I stared at the screen.
“Let her go.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“You don’t understand.””
“Understand what?””
“That if I don’t do this, they’ll kill both of us.””
I froze.
“Who?””
Vanessa looked behind the camera.
Someone else was there.
Someone standing in the shadows.
Then a voice spoke.
A voice I recognized.
A voice I thought belonged to someone who was helping me.
“Hello, Vincent.””
May you like
My blood turned cold.
Because the voice belonged to Marco.
