Chapter 8: The Man Who Walked Back Into Our Family

My father didn't move toward the front door immediately.

He stood at the bottom of the basement stairs, staring at the photograph on Daniel's phone.

Anthony Carter.

His older brother.

The man whose funeral he had attended twenty years earlier.

The man who had apparently been living under a different identity while secretly meeting Denise.

Dad looked at me.

"Stay behind me.""

I nodded.

Daniel gathered the documents from the office and placed them inside his briefcase.

Brianna remained near the filing cabinet, hugging herself.

Denise had gone completely quiet.

Then the doorbell rang again.

Dad walked upstairs.

I followed.

He opened the front door.

A tall man in a charcoal overcoat stood on the porch.

His hair was silver, and his face had deep lines around the eyes. But there was no mistaking the resemblance.

He looked like an older version of my father.

"Hello, Marcus.""

My father stared at him.

"You have some nerve.""

Anthony glanced past him.

"I see you've found the documents.""

"Don't come inside.""

Anthony smiled faintly.

"Still the same stubborn little brother.""

Dad stepped onto the porch.

"You let me believe you were dead.""

Anthony's expression barely changed.

"It was necessary.""

"For twenty years?""

"Things became complicated.""

Dad's hands curled into fists.

"You attended your own funeral?""

Anthony looked away.

"I had reasons.""

"You let our mother die believing she had lost both sons.""

For the first time, Anthony's smile disappeared.

"Don't bring our mother into this.""

Dad moved closer.

"You don't get to decide what I bring into this house.""

Anthony looked over his shoulder.

Then his eyes landed on me.

"So this is Maya.""

I felt uncomfortable under his gaze.

"How do you know my name?""

He smiled.

"Your mother talked about you constantly.""

I stepped closer to my father.

"Then why did you help Denise hide my college letters?""

Anthony's expression hardened.

"Because you don't understand what your mother left behind.""

Dad stepped between us.

"Don't talk to her.""

Anthony looked toward the hallway.

"Can we discuss this privately?""

"No.""

Daniel appeared behind us.

"Anthony, I suggest you leave until we have legal representation present.""

Anthony gave a small laugh.

"Daniel. Still playing the hero?""

Daniel didn't respond.

Anthony reached into his coat and removed a folded document.

"Marcus, I didn't come here to fight. I came to prevent a much bigger mistake.""

He held out the paper.

Dad didn't take it.

"What is it?""

"Proof that the property was never meant to belong entirely to Maya.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

Dad finally accepted the document.

It contained a copy of an old family trust agreement.

The paper was yellowed, and the signature at the bottom belonged to my grandfather.

Dad read the first page.

Then the second.

His face changed.

"What is this?""

Anthony stepped inside without being invited.

"The original property arrangement. Our father established it before his death. You were supposed to manage the property, not own it outright.""

Dad looked at Daniel.

"Is this real?""

Daniel examined the document.

"It appears authentic, but I need to verify the attached amendments.""

Anthony smiled.

"Of course you do.""

Dad turned back toward him.

"Why now?""

Anthony glanced toward Denise.

"Because Denise and I have been trying to correct something your late wife changed.""

I looked at him.

"What did my mother change?""

Anthony sighed.

"Your mother discovered that the family trust had been mismanaged. She wanted to transfer the property into a protected arrangement for you.""

Dad frowned.

"Why would she do that?""

"Because she believed you couldn't be trusted to protect it.""

My father looked as though he had been slapped.

"That's a lie.""

Anthony shrugged.

"She had her reasons.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"Your brother is leaving out a very important detail.""

Anthony turned.

"Careful, Daniel.""

The attorney opened his briefcase.

"The original family trust was amended legally. The property was placed under a separate protective arrangement, with Maya as its sole beneficiary.""

Anthony's smile disappeared.

"That amendment was never valid.""

"Then why did the court recognize it?""

Anthony said nothing.

Daniel placed a certified copy on the table.

"This is the document your mother signed with independent witnesses. It was filed and accepted.""

Dad examined it.

"Then the house belongs to Maya?""

"Subject to the trust terms, yes.""

Anthony shook his head.

"That wasn't supposed to happen.""

I looked at him.

"What do you mean?""

He turned toward me.

"Your grandfather wanted the house to remain a family asset. Your mother changed the arrangement because she was afraid someone would take advantage of it.""

"Someone like you?""

His expression darkened.

Dad stepped forward.

"That's enough.""

Anthony put his hands in his pockets.

"You don't understand the financial situation. The property has considerable value. There are obligations attached to it.""

"What obligations?""

Anthony glanced at Denise.

She looked down.

Then he said something that made the room go silent.

"Your wife and I had an agreement. If the property was sold, the proceeds would be divided between us.""

Dad stared at Denise.

"How long?""

She began crying.

"Marcus, please.""

"How long have you been planning to sell my daughter's house?""

Denise covered her face.

Anthony answered for her.

"Since before Maya's mother died.""

I felt the room tilt.

Dad looked like he couldn't breathe.

"You're telling me you were already planning this while my wife was alive?""

Anthony nodded.

"She found out. That's why everything became difficult.""

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

"Anthony, be very careful about what you say.""

But Anthony continued.

"Your wife threatened to expose the original arrangement. She said she would protect Maya no matter what.""

Dad's voice became almost inaudible.

"And you let her die without telling me any of this?""

Anthony looked away.

"I didn't cause her death.""

Nobody had accused him of that.

But his answer made me wonder whether there was something else hidden in the story.

Daniel took out his phone.

"I've contacted the authorities regarding the suspected financial fraud. You should remain here until they arrive.""

Anthony laughed.

"You think I'm going to wait around for you?""

He turned toward the door.

Dad blocked his path.

"You're not leaving.""

Anthony stared at him.

"Move.""

"No.""

For a moment, the two brothers stood face-to-face.

Then Anthony reached into his coat again.

He pulled out a small photograph and dropped it onto the table.

"Before you decide I'm the villain, look at this.""

Dad picked it up.

It showed my mother sitting in a hospital room, holding a folder.

Beside her stood Denise.

And behind them was another person.

A person whose face had been partially hidden by the doorway.

Dad turned the photograph over.

There was a handwritten date.

The day before my mother died.

And beneath it were seven words.

Marcus must never learn who was there.

My father looked at Anthony.

"Who took this photograph?""

Anthony's voice became quiet.

"Your wife did.""

Dad stared at him.

"Then who is the person behind the door?""

Anthony looked directly at me.

"Your mother knew him better than anyone.""

May you like

He paused.

"Because he was the man she trusted with her final secret.""
