Chapter 10: The Daughter Denise Never Told Us About

My father was still holding the hospital record when Denise collapsed into the chair.

Nobody moved to help her.

Not even Brianna.

"Denise," Dad said, his voice barely recognizable, "answer my question.""

She covered her face.

Anthony stood beside the coffee table, looking almost satisfied.

Daniel Reynolds remained near the doorway, holding the second hospital record.

I stared at Brianna.

We had birthdays only a few months apart, but suddenly I wondered whether everything I knew about our family had been built on a lie.

"Are we twins?"" I asked her.

Brianna shook her head.

"I don't know, Maya.""

"Then why does your name appear on my birth record?""

She looked at Denise.

"Mom?""

Denise finally raised her head.

"Marcus, please. We can discuss this without everyone watching.""

Dad shook his head.

"No. You've had years to tell the truth. We're doing this now.""

Denise wiped her cheeks.

"When I married you, I knew you had lost someone you loved. I knew Maya needed stability. I never wanted to hurt her.""

"That's not an answer.""

She looked at Brianna.

Then at me.

And finally, she said something that made my stomach turn.

"Brianna was born that day, but she wasn't my biological daughter.""

Brianna stepped backward.

"What?""

Denise reached for her hand.

"Sweetheart, let me explain.""

Brianna pulled away.

"You're saying I'm not your daughter?""

Denise began crying harder.

"I raised you. I loved you. Nothing changes that.""

"Then whose daughter am I?""

Nobody answered.

Anthony cleared his throat.

"She's my daughter.""

My father turned toward him.

"What?""

Anthony looked at Brianna.

"Your biological father is me.""

Brianna stared at him.

For a moment, she looked as though she hadn't understood the words.

Then she laughed nervously.

"That's not funny.""

"I'm not joking.""

She shook her head.

"No. My father died before I was born.""

Anthony lowered his eyes.

"I was told you were better off believing that.""

Brianna turned toward Denise.

"You told me my father died in a car accident.""

Denise nodded slowly.

"I was trying to protect you.""

"From what?""

"From him.""

Anthony's expression hardened.

"Don't pretend you were protecting her. You were protecting yourself.""

Dad slammed his hand against the table.

"Both of you stop talking around the truth!""

He turned toward Daniel.

"I want the original records. All of them.""

Daniel opened his briefcase.

"I brought copies of the documents your wife left with me. The original birth records are being held by the hospital archive, but these are certified copies.""

He placed them on the table.

Dad examined the first document.

Then the second.

His eyes moved across the pages.

I watched him carefully.

"What does it say?""

He looked at me.

"Your mother gave birth to two daughters. You and Brianna.""

I swallowed.

"But Denise isn't her biological mother?""

"No.""

Dad turned toward Anthony.

"And you're telling me she's yours?""

Anthony nodded.

"Yes.""

"Then why was Brianna raised by Denise?""

Anthony took a breath.

"Because Denise and I were together before she married you. Brianna was born while your wife was still pregnant with Maya.""

I felt sick.

My mother had known.

My mother had apparently known that Denise and Anthony had a child together before either of them entered our family.

But why had Brianna's name appeared on the same hospital record?

Daniel answered.

"Because the hospital temporarily recorded both births under the same family admission. The records were later separated after a legal guardianship arrangement was filed.""

Dad looked at him.

"Who authorized it?""

Daniel pointed to the second page.

"Your mother.""

I stared at the document.

"Mom arranged for Brianna to be raised by Denise?""

Daniel nodded.

"She wanted both children to have stable homes. But she also made certain that Maya's inheritance and property rights remained protected.""

Anthony laughed bitterly.

"She wanted control over everything.""

Daniel ignored him.

"Your mother knew that Denise and Anthony had a complicated history. She also knew Brianna had no stable home at the time. She agreed to a temporary arrangement, believing the adults would eventually tell both girls the truth.""

Brianna sank onto the sofa.

"So Mom knew all along?""

Denise nodded.

"Yes.""

"And you let me believe Dad was my father?""

Denise reached toward her.

"I was your mother in every way that mattered.""

Brianna pulled away.

"Then why did you help her steal Maya's room?""

Denise looked at her.

"Because I was trying to secure your future.""

"By taking hers?""

Denise didn't answer.

My father turned toward Anthony.

"Why did you disappear?""

Anthony looked at the floor.

"Because I made mistakes. I had debts. I was involved with people I shouldn't have been involved with. When the financial situation became dangerous, I left.""

"And you let everyone believe you were dead.""

"I thought it was the only way to protect Brianna.""

Dad laughed bitterly.

"Protect her? You abandoned her.""

Anthony's jaw tightened.

"I wasn't proud of it.""

"Then why come back now?""

Anthony looked at the property documents.

"Because the trust is worth millions, Marcus. And I was entitled to part of the family property.""

Daniel immediately interrupted.

"That is incorrect. The original trust does not give you ownership of Maya's protected assets.""

Anthony glared at him.

"Your wife changed the arrangement.""

"Legally.""

"She had no right.""

Daniel opened another folder.

"She had every right under the original agreement.""

Dad looked at the paperwork.

Then he noticed something.

"Wait. This document says Denise was appointed temporary guardian of Brianna.""

Daniel nodded.

"Correct.""

Dad's face darkened.

"But the guardianship ended when Brianna turned eighteen.""

Brianna nodded slowly.

"I turned eighteen last month.""

Daniel examined the date.

"Then the arrangement has expired.""

Anthony looked toward Brianna.

"Which means she can finally make her own decisions.""

Dad folded the papers.

"Nobody is using these girls to gain access to my wife's trust.""

I looked at him.

"Dad, I don't understand. If Brianna is Anthony's daughter, why did Mom put her name in the records?""

He took my hand.

"Because your mother was trying to protect two children from decisions made by adults.""

For the first time, I wondered whether my mother had known how badly things would eventually unravel.

Then Daniel pulled another document from his briefcase.

"There's something else.""

Dad looked exhausted.

"What now?""

Daniel placed the document on the table.

"This is the final amendment to your wife's estate plan.""

He pointed to a paragraph near the bottom.

"She created a separate education fund for Brianna.""

Brianna looked up.

"She did?""

"Yes. But the money could only be released when you reached adulthood, provided no one attempted to interfere with Maya's trust.""

Brianna began crying again.

Denise stared at the document.

"That's impossible.""

Daniel looked at her.

"Your wife anticipated this possibility.""

Dad examined the signature.

Then he read the final sentence.

"She left both girls something.""

He looked at me.

"Your mother never wanted Brianna to suffer because of the adults' mistakes.""

I looked at Brianna.

For the first time that afternoon, I didn't see the girl who had stolen my bedroom.

I saw someone whose entire childhood had been shaped by a secret she hadn't been allowed to know.

But before I could say anything, Daniel's phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

Then his expression became serious.

"Marcus, the hospital has confirmed something.""

Dad stood.

"What?""

Daniel looked at the two birth records.

"There's a third document in the archive. A guardianship withdrawal signed just days before your wife died.""

May you like

He paused.

"And the person who signed it wasn't your wife.""
