Chapter 11: The Signature That Changed Everything

Daniel put his phone on speaker.

A woman's voice came through.

"Mr. Reynolds, we've located the archived guardianship file. However, there's a discrepancy involving the authorization.""

Dad leaned closer.

"What kind of discrepancy?""

"The withdrawal form was submitted under your late wife's name, but the signature does not match the samples we have on file.""

I felt my father's hand tighten around mine.

"Who submitted it?"" he asked.

The woman paused.

"The record indicates it was delivered by Denise Carter.""

Denise immediately stood.

"I was helping with paperwork. That doesn't mean I did anything wrong.""

Dad turned toward her.

"You signed your wife's name?""

"I was authorized to handle family matters.""

"By whom?""

Denise said nothing.

Daniel asked the hospital representative to send the certified records to his office.

After ending the call, he opened another folder.

"There's a second problem. The guardianship withdrawal wasn't the only document submitted that week.""

He removed a photocopy.

"This is an application to change Brianna's legal parentage.""

Brianna looked confused.

"What does that mean?""

Daniel explained carefully.

"Someone attempted to remove Anthony's name from the original records and replace it with another individual.""

Anthony stepped forward.

"That's impossible.""

Daniel showed him the paper.

The proposed replacement was Marcus Carter.

My father stared at the page.

"They tried to make me her legal father?""

Denise began crying.

"I thought it would make things easier.""

Dad looked at her.

"Easier for whom?""

"For Brianna. She needed a father.""

Anthony laughed.

"That's rich, coming from you.""

Denise turned toward him.

"You disappeared! You left me with a newborn and no money!""

Anthony stepped closer.

"And you married my brother.""

"I was trying to survive!""

Dad raised his voice.

"Stop using your children as excuses for what you did.""

The room fell silent.

I looked at Brianna.

She was staring at the document with tears running down her cheeks.

"Did you know about this?"" I asked.

She shook her head.

"No. I swear.""

I believed her.

At least, I wanted to.

Daniel placed the application beside the financial records.

"There's a connection between these documents and the trust withdrawals. Someone was attempting to create a legal arrangement that would make Brianna appear to be Marcus's dependent and give Denise greater control over family assets.""

Dad frowned.

"But the trust was established for Maya.""

"Exactly. Which is why the attempted amendment was never approved.""

Anthony paced across the living room.

"Your wife complicated everything.""

Dad looked at him.

"Don't talk about her like that.""

"She was determined to give everything to Maya.""

"She was protecting her daughter.""

Anthony stopped.

"She was protecting the wrong person.""

I stepped forward.

"What does that mean?""

He looked at me.

"Your mother believed I was trying to steal the house. But I wanted what our father originally intended. The property was supposed to support the family.""

"Then why did you use Denise?""

Anthony looked away.

"Because she understood the financial situation.""

Dad shook his head.

"You were both willing to take from a child.""

Denise suddenly pointed at Anthony.

"He was the one who told me to move Maya out of the bedroom!""

Anthony spun around.

"You agreed to it.""

"You said the hidden documents were behind the old wall panel!""

Dad froze.

I looked toward the staircase.

The bedroom.

The hidden compartment.

Everything suddenly connected.

Denise had known about the compartment.

She had known where my mother's documents were hidden.

And the bedroom takeover wasn't simply an attempt to give Brianna more space.

It was a search.

Dad looked at her.

"You knew what was behind that panel?""

Denise's eyes widened.

"I didn't know exactly.""

"But you knew something was there.""

She lowered her head.

Anthony stepped forward.

"Marcus, don't make this worse than it needs to be.""

Dad turned toward him.

"Get out.""

Anthony laughed.

"You can't throw me out of a house that belongs to the family.""

Dad pointed toward the door.

"This house belongs to my daughter under the trust. And you are not welcome here.""

Anthony looked at Daniel.

"Tell him.""

Daniel didn't move.

Anthony's expression changed.

"Tell him what happens if he refuses to cooperate.""

Daniel opened his briefcase and removed a final document.

"I was going to explain this after the trust audit.""

He placed it in front of Dad.

"This is a notice of attempted fraudulent transfer. It identifies the people who submitted the forged documents.""

Dad examined the page.

Denise's name appeared.

Anthony's name appeared.

And beneath them was another name.

Brianna.

She gasped.

"I didn't sign anything!""

Daniel nodded.

"Your identification was used. We have no evidence yet that you knowingly participated.""

Brianna covered her face.

Denise rushed toward her.

"Don't worry, sweetheart. We'll fix this.""

Brianna stepped away.

"Stop calling me sweetheart!""

Denise froze.

Brianna was crying openly now.

"You lied about my father. You lied about Maya. You lied about the house. You even lied about college.""

Denise's face crumpled.

"I did everything for you.""

"No. You did everything because you wanted something.""

Brianna turned toward my father.

"Can I ask you something?""

Dad nodded.

"Did you ever know?""

"Know what?""

"That I wasn't your daughter?""

He looked at her for a long moment.

"No.""

Brianna lowered her eyes.

"I wish you had been.""

Those words seemed to hurt him more than anything else.

He reached toward her.

"You didn't do anything wrong by being born.""

Brianna began sobbing.

I stood beside her.

For the first time, we weren't fighting over a room.

We were two girls discovering that the adults around us had built an entire family on secrets.

Then Daniel's phone vibrated again.

He checked the message.

His expression hardened.

"Marcus, the bank has completed its preliminary review.""

Dad stood.

"What did they find?""

Daniel turned the screen around.

A large payment had been scheduled to leave the trust account that morning.

It had been stopped before processing.

The destination account belonged to a company registered overseas.

Dad looked at the amount.

"Who authorized this?""

Daniel examined the transaction details.

Then he looked at Denise.

"Your wife.""

Denise shook her head.

"No.""

Daniel pointed to the authorization.

"The request was submitted using her credentials.""

Anthony suddenly grabbed his coat.

Dad blocked the door.

"Where do you think you're going?""

Anthony looked at him.

"You're making a mistake.""

Daniel's phone rang again.

He answered.

Listened.

Then slowly lowered it.

"Marcus, there's another development.""

"What?""

"The bank has identified the original source of the overseas account.""

Dad stared.

Daniel took a breath.

"It's connected to an account opened in your name.""

My father went completely still.

"That's impossible.""

Daniel nodded.

"Someone has been using your identity for years.""

I looked at Denise.

She was no longer crying.

May you like

She was staring at the front door.

And when a second phone began ringing inside her purse, she suddenly looked terrified.
