Chapter 13: The Recording That Exposed Everything

For several seconds, my father couldn't speak.

The detective's words seemed to hang in the living room.

My mother's death might not have been an accident.

Dad gripped his phone so tightly that his knuckles turned white.

"Detective, are you telling me someone deliberately caused my wife's death?""

"I am telling you that we recovered a recording from a storage unit connected to Anthony Carter. We need to examine its contents before drawing conclusions.""

Dad looked at his brother.

Anthony was no longer smiling.

"Where is the recording?"" Dad asked.

"It's secured as evidence. We also recovered several documents and electronic devices. I need you to come to the station tomorrow morning.""

"Tomorrow? My wife has been dead for nine years!""

"I understand, Mr. Carter. But some of the evidence was recently transferred into that storage unit. We believe someone was attempting to remove it.""

Dad closed his eyes.

"Who?""

"We're still establishing that.""

When the call ended, nobody moved.

Denise stood beside the coffee table, staring at the floor.

Anthony slowly reached for his coat.

Dad blocked him.

"You're not going anywhere.""

Anthony looked at him.

"You don't have the right to detain me.""

"No. But the police might have questions for you.""

Anthony laughed nervously.

"You've always been easy to manipulate, Marcus.""

Dad stepped closer.

"Did you hurt my wife?""

Anthony's expression hardened.

"I didn't kill Rachel.""

It was the first time anyone had mentioned my mother's name in that room without tenderness.

I felt sick.

Dad's voice broke.

"Then why was your name connected to a recording from the night she died?""

Anthony didn't answer.

Daniel interrupted.

"Nobody should make accusations until the recording has been authenticated.""

I turned toward him.

"You knew something was wrong, didn't you?""

He looked at me.

"I suspected that your mother was frightened near the end of her life. But she never told me exactly why.""

"Then why didn't you tell Dad?""

Daniel lowered his eyes.

"Because she asked me to wait until the evidence could protect you.""

I wanted to be angry with him.

But I was too exhausted to understand who had been protecting me and who had been using me.

My father walked toward the window.

He looked outside for a long time.

Then he turned around.

"Denise, I want the truth.""

She shook her head.

"Marcus...""

"Did you know my wife was afraid?""

Denise's lips trembled.

"She was suspicious of everyone.""

"Did you visit her at the hospital the night before she died?""

Denise nodded.

"Yes.""

"Who was with you?""

She looked at Anthony.

He stared back at her.

Finally, she whispered, "Anthony.""

My father closed his eyes.

"Both of you?""

Denise nodded again.

Dad walked to the sofa and sat down.

He looked like someone had taken years off his life.

I sat beside him.

"There's something I need to tell you," I whispered.

He turned toward me.

"When Mom was in the hospital, I remember hearing her arguing with someone on the phone.""

His eyes widened.

"What?""

"I was eight. I was waiting outside her room. She said someone had taken something that belonged to her. Then she said, 'You promised you would leave my daughter alone.''"

Dad stared at me.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"I didn't understand what she meant.""

I remembered the hallway, the cold hospital floor, and the sound of my mother's voice behind the closed door.

I remembered seeing a man walk away.

I had never recognized his face.

But now, looking at Anthony, I wondered.

Daniel immediately wrote down my statement.

"That's important, Maya. Do you remember anything else?""

I closed my eyes.

"His shoes.""

"His shoes?""

"Brown leather shoes. One of them had a silver buckle.""

Anthony suddenly looked at me.

For the first time, he seemed genuinely frightened.

Denise noticed.

She turned toward him.

"Anthony?""

He said nothing.

Dad stood.

"Why are you looking at her like that?""

Anthony stepped backward.

"She's remembering something incorrectly.""

I shook my head.

"I know what I heard.""

Daniel looked at Anthony's shoes.

They were black now.

But he immediately asked whether the police could compare the old hospital security footage with the photographs in the storage unit.

Anthony became furious.

"This is ridiculous!""

Then he pointed at Denise.

"She was the one who handled the hospital documents!""

Denise gasped.

"Don't put this on me!""

"You signed everything!""

"Because you told me to!""

Dad stepped between them.

"Both of you stop!""

The front doorbell rang.

Two police officers stood outside.

They had come to speak with Anthony and Denise.

Detective Harris was on his way.

The officers asked everyone to remain available while they documented the financial records and the recovered evidence.

Anthony was escorted to a separate vehicle for questioning.

Denise remained inside, visibly shaking.

Before leaving, one officer approached Dad.

"Mr. Carter, the detective wants you to know that the storage unit contained more than financial documents.""

"What else?""

The officer checked his notes.

"An old digital recorder, several hospital photographs, and a sealed envelope addressed to your daughter.""

My heart stopped.

"To me?""

He nodded.

"Your name is written on it.""

The officer handed my father a photograph of the envelope.

My name was written across the front in my mother's handwriting.

Beneath it were six words.

For Maya, when she is ready.

I started crying.

Dad held the photograph.

"Where is the envelope?""

"It's being preserved with the other evidence.""

I looked toward Denise.

She was staring at the floor.

For the first time, I wondered whether she had known about the envelope all along.

That night, I couldn't sleep.

I sat on the edge of my old mattress, holding the broken photograph of my mother.

Dad had carefully removed the remaining glass and placed the picture inside a protective sleeve.

At around midnight, I heard footsteps in the hallway.

I opened my door.

Brianna stood outside.

She was holding a small cardboard box.

"Can I come in?""

I stepped aside.

She placed the box on my desk.

"I found this in Mom's closet.""

Inside were old photographs, hospital receipts, and several letters.

One photograph showed Denise and Anthony standing outside the hospital.

Another showed my mother sitting in a wheelchair.

But the final photograph made my heart stop.

It showed me as a baby.

My mother was holding me.

And beside her stood a woman I didn't recognize.

On the back was a handwritten note.

The woman who saved both my daughters.

I looked at Brianna.

"Do you know who she is?""

Brianna shook her head.

Then she pulled another envelope from the box.

"This was hidden underneath.""

It contained a business card.

The name belonged to a retired hospital nurse.

And beneath her name, someone had written an address.

Before I could read it again, my phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

May you like

One message appeared.

Your mother didn't die because of Anthony. Ask the nurse what happened to the original medication.
