Chapter 8: The Name in the Bloodline

The elevator climbed in silence.

Ethan stood rigidly against the mirrored wall, Lily in his arms and Sarah beside him.

Nobody spoke.

The photograph remained in Ethan's hand.

He couldn't stop looking at the boy standing beside Jonathan Mercer and Dr. Adrian Cole.

Ten years old.

Dark hair.

Narrow face.

A small scar across his right hand.

The same scar Lily had described.

The same man who had supposedly been treating Sarah in a hidden medical room.

Ethan looked at Sarah.

“You said you didn't know who was behind this.””

“I didn't.””

“You knew Adrian Cole was involved.””

“Yes.””

“You knew Jonathan was involved.””

“I suspected.””

“And now you're telling me there's someone above them.””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Sarah looked at the elevator floor.

“I don't know.””

Ethan's jaw tightened.

“Everybody knows something except me.””

“That was the point.””

He stared at her.

Sarah took a breath.

“They wanted you outside the circle.””

“Why?””

“Because your father built the circle.””

Ethan looked at the photograph again.

“My father.””

“Yes.””

“He died eighteen years ago.””

“I know.””

“Then why does everyone keep talking about him?””

“Because Victor Vance left something behind.””

The elevator stopped.

The doors opened.

They had reached the tenth floor.

The presidential suite corridor looked untouched by the chaos below.

Soft golden lights.

Thick carpet.

Paintings worth more than most people's houses.

Not a single alarm could be heard.

Ethan stepped out.

“Where?””

Michael pointed down the hallway.

“Suite 1001.””

Ethan frowned.

“That room has been sealed since the renovation.””

“I know.””

“Then how do we get inside?””

Michael gave him a look.

“Your father kept a private key.””

Ethan almost laughed.

“Of course he did.””

They reached the door.

Michael reached beneath a decorative molding and removed a small brass key.

He handed it to Ethan.

Ethan stared at it.

“You've had this for three years?””

“Longer.””

“And you never told me.””

“I couldn't.””

“Why?””

“Because I didn't know whether you were being watched.””

Ethan inserted the key.

The lock turned.

The door opened.

Dust hung in the air.

The suite had clearly been abandoned for years.

Furniture covered in white sheets.

A piano near the windows.

Shelves filled with old books.

And on the far wall, a massive portrait of Victor Vance.

Ethan had not seen that portrait since he was a teenager.

His father looked younger than Ethan remembered.

Confident.

Controlled.

Standing beside him was Jonathan Mercer.

But beneath the portrait was something Ethan had never seen.

A brass plaque.

*THE VANCE FAMILY ARCHIVE*

Ethan walked toward it.

“What's in here?””

Michael answered.

“Everything your father wanted hidden.””

Ethan turned.

“And you knew.””

Michael didn't look away.

“Yes.””

“You worked for him.””

“Yes.””

“You knew he had secrets.””

“Yes.””

“And you let me believe he was exactly what I thought he was.””

Michael's expression hardened.

“You were twenty-nine when he died.””

“I was thirty.””

“You were still his son.””

“And?””

Michael's voice softened.

“You worshipped him.””

Ethan said nothing.

That was true.

Victor Vance had never been an easy father.

He had been demanding.

Rarely affectionate.

Always working.

But Ethan had believed he was honest.

A man who built everything from nothing.

A man who taught his son that a promise meant more than a contract.

A man who had looked Ethan in the eyes after Sarah's diagnosis and said:

“Family comes before money.””

Now Ethan wasn't sure what those words had ever meant.

Sarah moved toward an old desk.

“He kept the original trust documents here.””

She opened a drawer.

Empty.

Another.

Nothing.

Michael cursed.

“They moved it.””

“Who?””

“Jonathan.””

Ethan turned sharply.

“Then why is he still helping us?””

Michael gave him a tired smile.

“That's the part you're missing.””

“What?””

“Jonathan isn't helping us.””

A slow clap echoed from the doorway.

Everyone froze.

Daniel turned first.

Emma gasped.

A man stepped into the suite.

Gray suit.

Silver hair.

A walking cane.

Calm eyes.

Ethan had never met him.

But he recognized the face.

From the photograph.

From twenty years ago.

From the hospital footage.

From Lily's memory.

Dr. Adrian Cole.

He smiled.

“Finally.””

Sarah stepped between him and Lily.

“Stay away from my daughter.””

Adrian sighed.

“You still think this is about her.””

“It is.””

“No.””

He looked at Ethan.

“It's about him.””

Ethan stared.

“What do you want?””

Adrian tapped the cane against the floor.

“I want the truth to stop being buried.””

“That doesn't explain why you hunted my family.””

“I didn't.””

Sarah shook her head.

“You worked for them.””

“I worked for your father.””

Ethan's face tightened.

“My father has been dead for eighteen years.””

Adrian smiled.

“Your father died.””

He paused.

“His plans didn't.””

Ethan stepped forward.

“What plans?””

Adrian looked around the room.

“Victor knew the company would eventually become too large to protect traditionally.””

“So he created the trust.””

“Yes.””

“He put Lily in control.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Adrian's expression became serious.

“Because he knew what your family had become.””

Ethan frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“Your father discovered that several investors had begun using the company for private medical research.””

Sarah closed her eyes.

Adrian continued.

“By the time he confronted them, it was too late.””

“Who were they?””

Adrian looked at Michael.

Then Daniel.

Then Emma.

“Some are still inside your company.””

Ethan felt cold.

“Names.””

Adrian reached into his coat.

He pulled out a folder.

But before he could hand it over, gunfire erupted outside.

Everyone ducked.

The window shattered.

Sarah grabbed Lily.

Ethan threw himself over them.

Glass scattered across the floor.

Daniel shouted:

“Down!””

Another shot.

The portrait of Victor Vance exploded from the wall.

Michael rushed to the door.

“Someone's coming!””

Adrian dropped his cane.

For the first time, panic appeared on his face.

“They're here.””

Ethan looked at him.

“Who?””

Adrian answered:

“Your board.””

The door burst open.

Two armed security officers entered.

Behind them came Patricia.

The receptionist.

Her perfect hair was still in place.

But the friendly customer-service expression was gone.

She looked directly at Ethan.

“Mr. Vance.””

Ethan stood slowly.

“What the hell is going on?””

Patricia raised her weapon.

“You should have checked into the motel.””

Ethan stared at her.

“You knew.””

“Yes.””

“You altered my reservation.””

“Yes.””

“You knew my daughter was here.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Patricia's face was emotionless.

“Because she is the key.””

Sarah tightened her arms around Lily.

Ethan stepped forward.

“Put the gun down.””

“No.””

“Patricia.””

“You think this is about money?””

She almost smiled.

“Your family stopped being about money a long time ago.””

Daniel moved beside Ethan.

“You're making a mistake.””

Patricia turned toward him.

“You're already dead to them, Daniel.””

A shot rang out.

Patricia's weapon fired.

Daniel collapsed.

Emma screamed.

“Daniel!””

Ethan dropped to the floor beside him.

Blood spread across Daniel's shirt.

Sarah grabbed the emergency medical kit.

“Pressure!””

Lupita pressed a towel against the wound.

Daniel looked at Ethan.

“They… changed the trust…”

Ethan leaned closer.

“What?””

Daniel struggled to breathe.

“The final beneficiary…”

He coughed.

“It's not Lily.””

Everyone went still.

“What are you talking about?””

Daniel looked toward Sarah.

“She knows.””

Sarah's face went pale.

“No.””

Daniel's eyes fluttered.

“They changed it before your disappearance.””

“Who changed it?””

Daniel looked at Ethan.

“Your father.””

Ethan stared.

“That can't be true.””

Daniel whispered:

“Victor didn't name Lily.””

“Who, then?””

Daniel's eyes moved toward Adrian.

“The first child.””

Adrian went completely still.

Ethan looked at him.

Adrian's face was unreadable.

“What child?””

Daniel's voice barely carried.

“Victor had another son.””

Silence.

Ethan slowly turned toward Adrian.

“No.””

Adrian did not answer.

Sarah whispered:

“Ethan…”

“Don't.””

He looked at her.

“Is that true?””

She couldn't speak.

“Sarah.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

Ethan's world seemed to collapse.

“My father had another child?””

“Before you.””

“Who?””

Adrian looked at Ethan.

His expression was strangely gentle.

“Me.””

Nobody moved.

The man Ethan had believed was merely a physician was standing in front of him, claiming to be the son of Victor Vance.

Ethan laughed once.

It wasn't humor.

It was disbelief.

“You expect me to believe that?””

Adrian reached into his pocket.

He withdrew an old photograph.

Victor Vance.

A woman Ethan didn't recognize.

And a little boy.

Adrian.

On the back, written in Victor's unmistakable handwriting:

*My first son.*

Ethan stared.

“What happened to him?””

Adrian answered quietly.

“I was sent away.””

“Why?””

“Because your father believed one child was enough to inherit the company.””

Ethan's eyes narrowed.

“Then why build the trust?””

“Because years later, he regretted it.””

Sarah stepped toward Ethan.

“Your father wanted to divide everything between you.””

“But someone changed it.””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Adrian looked at Patricia.

Patricia raised her gun again.

“Enough.””

Ethan turned toward her.

“You're working for him.””

Patricia's eyes flicked toward Adrian.

“No.””

“Then who?””

She smiled.

“The same person who's been paying all of us.””

A voice came through the room's old intercom.

Deep.

Distorted.

Calm.

“Patricia.””

She immediately lowered her weapon.

“Yes, sir.””

Ethan looked at the intercom.

Adrian backed away.

“No.””

Sarah whispered:

“He's here.””

The voice continued.

“Bring Ethan to the boardroom.””

Patricia nodded.

“And the girl?””

“Bring both.””

Sarah stepped forward.

“Never.””

Patricia lifted the gun.

Ethan raised both hands.

“Wait.””

Sarah looked at him.

He leaned close.

“Stay calm.””

“What are you doing?””

“Buying time.””

Patricia stared.

“You have one minute.””

Ethan looked at Adrian.

“Tell me something.””

Adrian met his eyes.

“What?””

“Why would my father fake your existence?””

“He didn't.””

“Then why have I never heard of you?””

“Because someone erased me.””

“Who?””

Adrian looked at Sarah.

“Her family.””

Sarah's face hardened.

“My family?””

“Your father discovered Victor had a second son.””

Ethan stared.

“Your father?””

Sarah nodded slowly.

“My father hated yours.””

“Why?””

“He believed Victor stole his medical research.””

Adrian continued:

“Your father wanted the trust. Victor refused to give it to him.””

Sarah's voice shook.

“Then my father threatened him.””

“Threatened with what?””

Adrian looked at Lily.

“With Sarah.””

Ethan suddenly understood.

“They targeted her because of her family.””

“Yes.””

Sarah whispered:

“My father's research was the basis for the treatment.””

Ethan stared.

“The medical treatment.””

“Yes.””

Adrian nodded.

“Your father developed the original therapy.””

“And you continued it.””

“Yes.””

“On Sarah.””

“I saved her life.””

Ethan's anger rose.

“You also helped hide her.””

“I helped keep her alive.””

“You let me believe she was dead.””

“I was ordered to.””

“By whom?””

Adrian's eyes darkened.

“By the man speaking through that intercom.””

The speaker crackled.

The distorted voice returned.

“You're all very close.””

Ethan stepped toward it.

“Show yourself.””

A pause.

Then:

“You'll see me soon.””

A door behind them opened.

Patricia gestured with the weapon.

“Move.””

Ethan took Lily's hand.

Sarah stayed close.

They were forced into the corridor.

But as Ethan passed the old portrait, he noticed something.

The frame was crooked.

He reached behind it.

His fingers found a hidden compartment.

Inside was a small metal key.

And a folded note.

He opened it while walking.

Three words.

*Trust your daughter.*

He looked at Lily.

She stared back.

“Daddy?””

Ethan slipped the note into his pocket.

“Nothing.””

They entered the elevator.

Patricia stood beside them.

Sarah held Lily.

Adrian, Michael, Emma, Lupita, and the wounded Daniel remained behind.

As the doors closed, Ethan noticed Adrian staring directly at him.

Adrian mouthed something.

Ethan couldn't hear it.

But he understood the words.

*Ask her about the blue box.*

The elevator descended.

Patricia stood silently with her weapon.

Lily suddenly reached into her backpack.

“Daddy.””

“What?””

She pulled out the small paper crane.

The one from Suite 904.

She unfolded it.

Inside was a second message.

Ethan stared.

The handwriting was Sarah's.

*The man taking you to the boardroom is not who you think he is.*

Ethan looked at Patricia.

Then at the elevator display.

The numbers descended.

Ten.

Nine.

Eight.

Patricia suddenly touched the emergency stop.

The elevator jolted.

Lily cried out.

Ethan grabbed her.

“What are you doing?””

Patricia looked at him.

Her face had changed again.

For the first time, fear filled her eyes.

“I'm trying to save you.””

Ethan stared.

“You just put us in a locked elevator.””

“I know.””

“Then explain.””

Patricia whispered:

“The boardroom isn't at the end of the elevator ride.””

Ethan looked at the display.

It had stopped between floors.

Patricia pulled open a concealed panel.

Behind it was a narrow maintenance passage.

She pointed inside.

“Get out.””

Sarah stared at her.

“Why should we trust you?””

Patricia swallowed.

“Because my husband disappeared trying to expose them.””

Ethan's expression changed.

“Who is your husband?””

She looked directly at him.

“Jerry Holloway.””

The night security supervisor.

The man whose name had appeared in Lupita's list.

Ethan suddenly remembered the hidden microphone.

The blocked cameras.

The empty security office.

Patricia whispered:

“He found the first file.””

“What file?””

“The one your father left.””

“What did it contain?””

Her voice cracked.

“The name of the person who ordered Sarah Vance's death.””

Ethan's heart pounded.

“Who?””

Patricia looked toward the elevator shaft.

Then back at him.

“I'll tell you.””

She stepped into the passage.

“But once you hear the name, there's no going back.””

Ethan followed.

Sarah took Lily's hand.

The three of them disappeared into the darkness.

Behind them, Patricia quietly closed the hidden panel.

And somewhere inside the hotel, the distorted voice on the intercom began laughing.

May you like

Because he knew Ethan had just escaped the trap.

And walked directly toward the truth.
