Chapter 5: The Secret Beneath the Hotel
Ethan read the sentence three times.
*Now you know why we needed your daughter here.*
His first instinct was to grab Lily and run.
Not later.
Not after answers.
Now.
He turned so quickly that Lupita nearly stumbled into him.
“We're leaving.””
Lupita nodded.
“Through the elevator?””
“No.””
Ethan pointed toward the archive room.
“Whatever happens, Lily stays between us. Nobody touches her.””
Lily looked up.
“Daddy, why?””
“Because we're playing a game.””
“What game?””
“The stay-close-to-Daddy game.””
She seemed to accept that.
“Okay.””
Ethan picked her up.
He was halfway toward the steel door when the computers inside the archive room suddenly came alive.
One monitor.
Then another.
Then another.
Screens flickered on across the darkness.
Lupita gasped.
Ethan stopped.
A low electronic hum filled the room.
On the center monitor appeared a video.
The image was grainy.
Old.
Security-camera footage.
Ethan's face went pale.
The timestamp read:
*MARCH 17 — 11:31 P.M.*
He knew the date.
The night Sarah supposedly died.
He stepped toward the screen.
“Play it.””
The video began.
A hospital corridor appeared.
Sarah was being wheeled through the hallway on a hospital bed.
She was conscious.
Alive.
Ethan's knees weakened.
Lily buried her face against his shoulder.
“Mommy.””
Ethan couldn't speak.
The footage showed Sarah turning her head toward the camera.
Her face was pale, but her eyes were wide open.
She looked frightened.
Then the image froze.
A red circle appeared around a person standing in the background.
Ethan leaned closer.
Daniel.
The general manager of the Grand Regent.
He was talking to someone.
The second person stepped into view.
Michael.
Ethan stopped breathing.
His brother-in-law.
Both men were there.
On the night Sarah died.
And neither had ever told him.
“What the hell…”
Lupita whispered, “Maybe they were helping her.””
Ethan shook his head.
“No.””
He rewound the footage.
Again.
Sarah came down the corridor.
Daniel walked beside the bed.
Michael followed.
Then someone else entered the frame.
A woman.
Dark hair.
Blue sweater.
Ethan's heart hammered.
He paused the screen.
“Emma.””
The woman stood beside Sarah's bed.
Alive.
Present.
And holding a folder.
The timestamp changed.
11:37.
The woman bent down and whispered something to Sarah.
Sarah's lips moved.
Even without sound, Ethan could recognize her expression.
She was pleading.
Ethan pressed play.
The audio crackled.
At first there was only static.
Then voices.
Sarah's.
“No.””
Emma leaned closer.
“You don't have a choice.””
Sarah shook her head.
“She'll lose her mother.””
“She already has.””
Sarah's eyes filled with tears.
“Not if he knows the truth.””
Emma looked toward the hallway.
“Ethan cannot know.””
The video stopped.
Ethan stared at the screen.
“Play it again.””
The same words filled the room.
He had watched Sarah die.
He had held her hand.
He had kissed her forehead.
He had heard the monitor flatten into one long sound.
At least, that was what his memory told him.
But the footage showed something he had never known.
She had been alive hours before.
And Emma had told her that Ethan could not know the truth.
Ethan's breathing became uneven.
Lupita reached toward him.
“Mr. Vance…”
He stepped away.
“Don't.””
She withdrew her hand.
“I’m sorry.””
Ethan looked at the archive room.
“Find me the hospital record.””
Lupita pointed toward the shelves.
“There are hundreds.””
“Then look for Sarah Vance.””
They split up.
Ethan carried Lily into the center of the room and sat her on a chair.
“Stay here.””
She grabbed his sleeve.
“Don't go.””
He crouched beside her.
“I'll be right here.””
“But Mommy was here.””
“I know.””
“Is she alive?””
Ethan froze.
He had no answer.
Lily's eyes searched his face.
“Daddy?””
He touched her cheek.
“I don't know yet.””
She nodded slowly.
“And if she is?””
Ethan swallowed.
“Then I'll bring her home.””
He stood.
Behind them, a printer suddenly started.
Paper slid out.
One page.
Then another.
Then another.
Lupita stared.
“We didn't touch it.””
Ethan walked over.
The first page contained a list of names.
Employees.
Executives.
Doctors.
Security officers.
At the bottom was one name highlighted in black.
*SARAH VANCE — STATUS: TRANSFERRED*
The second page was a transaction report.
Payments made to three companies.
One was registered in Illinois.
One in Delaware.
One overseas.
The amounts totaled $18.7 million.
Ethan looked at the third page.
It was a medical invoice.
Patient:
*Sarah Vance*
Treatment:
*Experimental neurological therapy*
Date:
*March 18*
Ethan's eyes widened.
March 18.
The day after her supposed death.
He looked at Lupita.
“Read that.””
She did.
Her hand rose to her mouth.
“She received treatment after she was declared dead.””
“Exactly.””
Lily was watching them.
“Daddy?””
Ethan turned.
“Stay there.””
A notification appeared on the computer.
*NEW FILE UPLOADED.*
He clicked it.
One video.
The thumbnail showed Sarah.
Ethan pressed play.
The screen filled with her face.
Not the hospital.
Not a security camera.
A deliberate recording.
Sarah was sitting at a desk.
She looked thinner than Ethan remembered.
Her eyes were tired.
But her voice was steady.
“Ethan.””
He stopped breathing.
“If you're watching this, something went wrong.””
She folded her hands.
“I don't know when you'll find this.””
She glanced away.
“But I need you to understand that I did this because I thought it would protect you.””
Ethan stepped closer.
Sarah continued.
“There is money being moved through the company. Not stolen in the usual sense. Redirected.””
She coughed softly.
“I discovered that several people have been using hospital foundations, shell companies, and corporate charitable accounts to move funds.””
Her eyes sharpened.
“But that's not the worst part.””
Ethan's face went rigid.
Sarah looked directly into the camera.
“They know about Lily.””
The room became silent.
“They know where she goes to school. They know what time you pick her up. They know which pediatrician sees her. They know the names of her teachers.””
Ethan's blood ran cold.
Sarah continued.
“I asked Emma to help me investigate.””
She looked down.
“I thought she was protecting us.””
A tear slipped down her cheek.
“I was wrong.””
Lupita whispered, “Oh God.””
Sarah looked back at the camera.
“Emma is being forced to work with them.””
The video glitched.
Ethan's heart stopped.
“No.””
The image returned.
Sarah's voice was weaker.
“I don't know what they have threatened her with.””
“But I know they have something.””
She leaned closer.
“If you find the archive under the Grand Regent, do not trust any employee who says they were unaware of it.””
Ethan glanced toward the hallway.
Sarah continued.
“The archive contains records of every illegal transfer and every person connected to it.””
She took a breath.
“And one more thing.””
Her expression changed.
“This is the most important part.””
Ethan stepped closer.
“Michael isn't the person you should blame.””
The screen suddenly froze.
Ethan stared.
“No.””
A loading symbol spun.
Then the video ended.
He slammed his hand against the desk.
“Come on!””
Lily jumped.
“Daddy!””
Ethan immediately turned.
“I'm sorry.””
She looked frightened.
He crouched beside her.
“I didn't mean to scare you.””
“Mommy said Uncle Michael isn't bad.””
Ethan stared.
“What?””
Lily shrugged.
“That's what Mommy said.””
“Did she tell you that?””
She nodded.
“Yesterday.””
Ethan felt a jolt.
“Yesterday?””
“Yes.””
Lupita looked confused.
“Your daughter said yesterday?””
Ethan nodded.
“Lily, where did you see Mommy yesterday?””
The little girl pointed toward her backpack.
“On my tablet.””
Ethan's eyes widened.
“The tablet is dead.””
“No.””
Lily shook her head.
“Mommy talked to me.””
Ethan opened the backpack.
The tablet's screen was black.
He pressed the power button.
Nothing.
He pressed it again.
Still nothing.
Then he noticed the charging cable.
It had been connected.
He pulled it out.
There was a tiny red light at the bottom.
The tablet turned on.
Battery: 81%.
Ethan stared.
It should have been dead hours ago.
He opened the history.
One video file.
Recorded yesterday at 8:14 p.m.
Uploaded from an unknown location.
He pressed play.
Sarah appeared.
But this time, she wasn't sick.
She was standing in what looked like a small room.
Her hair was different.
Longer.
Her face looked thinner.
But she was unmistakably alive.
“Hi, Rose.””
Lily gasped.
“Mommy!””
Ethan felt something inside him break.
Sarah smiled sadly.
“If you're watching this, I hope Daddy is with you.””
Lily reached for the screen.
“I love you, Mommy.””
Ethan couldn't breathe.
Sarah continued.
“You don't have to be scared.””
Then her expression changed.
“Your father will tell you everything when the time is right.””
Ethan's eyes filled with tears.
Lily looked at him.
“Daddy, that's you.””
“Yes.””
Sarah smiled.
“And Daddy, I'm sorry.””
Ethan stepped closer.
“What did you do?””
On the screen, Sarah lowered her voice.
“I had to disappear.””
Lupita stared.
Ethan's entire body went numb.
“I couldn't let them find Lily.””
Sarah glanced behind her.
“I have been trying to come home.””
She swallowed.
“But every time I get close, someone moves me.””
Ethan whispered, “Where are you?””
Sarah looked into the camera.
“The place you built.””
Ethan frowned.
“What does that mean?””
She continued.
“You always said hotels were supposed to be temporary homes.””
A faint smile.
“Maybe that's why they chose yours.””
Then the video flickered.
Sarah's voice became urgent.
“Do not trust the board.””
The screen went black.
Lily started crying.
“Mommy!””
Ethan held her.
“It's okay.””
“Mommy's alive.””
Ethan closed his eyes.
“I hope so.””
“No.””
Lily looked directly at him.
“She is.””
Ethan didn't correct her.
For the first time in three years, he allowed himself to believe it.
Then the archive door slammed shut.
The lock engaged automatically.
Lupita rushed toward it.
“It's locked!””
Ethan grabbed the handle.
Nothing.
A voice came over a ceiling speaker.
Male.
Calm.
Almost amused.
“Mr. Vance.””
Ethan looked up.
“Who are you?””
“You're asking the wrong question.””
“Open the door.””
“You've seen enough.””
“No.””
A soft laugh.
“I knew you'd say that.””
Ethan pulled Lily closer.
“What do you want?””
“We want what your wife was willing to give us.””
Ethan's eyes narrowed.
“What?””
“The company.””
Silence.
“The hotel group.””
“You're not getting it.””
Another laugh.
“You misunderstand.””
The speaker crackled.
“We don't need to take it.””
Ethan looked around the archive.
“We already own enough of it.””
His face went cold.
“Who?””
The voice answered.
“You'll know soon.””
The lights shut off.
Total darkness.
Lily screamed.
Ethan held her tightly.
Then emergency lights switched on.
One monitor illuminated.
A live video feed appeared.
It showed the Grand Regent lobby.
Patricia stood behind the front desk.
Karla stood beside her.
Daniel was there.
Michael was there.
And behind them stood a woman.
Long dark hair.
Blue sweater.
Silver star necklace around her neck.
Ethan stared at the screen.
The woman looked directly into the camera.
Then she raised her hand.
She wasn't smiling.
She wasn't crying.
She simply pressed one finger to her lips.
Quiet.
Ethan stepped toward the monitor.
“Sarah?””
The woman turned.
And for one unbearable moment, her face was fully visible.
Ethan recognized her.
Not from photographs.
Not from memories.
From the night they met.
She was Sarah.
Older.
Thinner.
Alive.
Then Michael looked toward the camera.
His expression was pure terror.
He shook his head violently.
“No.””
Ethan stared.
Michael mouthed one word.
*Run.*
The feed cut.
A second later, the archive door unlocked.
Ethan didn't hesitate.
He grabbed Lily, took Lupita's hand, and ran.
Because now there was only one question left.
May you like
Not whether Sarah had survived.
But why the people who had hidden her for three years were suddenly letting Ethan see her now.
