Chapter 3: The Hospital Record

Ethan moved through the service corridor with Lily wrapped tightly against his chest, one hand supporting her legs and the other gripping the black envelope.

The hallway behind the Grand Regent's polished guest areas looked like an entirely different building.

Concrete walls.

Exposed pipes.

Metal doors.

Harsh fluorescent lights.

No chandelier.

No music.

No smiling employees.

Only the steady hum of machinery hidden behind the walls.

Lupita walked beside him, breathing hard as she tried to keep up.

“Where are we going?”” she whispered.

“Security office.””

“You think the cameras are compromised?””

“I don't think anything anymore.””

Ethan pushed through another fire door.

“We're going to assume everything is compromised.””

Lupita looked at him.

“You still trust anyone here?””

Ethan stopped.

He looked down at Lily.

She was asleep again.

Her head rested against the hollow beneath his collarbone.

He lowered his voice.

“Right now, I trust you.””

Lupita looked genuinely surprised.

“Why?””

“Because when everyone else saw a problem at the front desk, you saw a tired little girl.””

Lupita's expression softened.

“That's what anybody should have seen.””

“Exactly.””

They reached a narrow staircase.

Lupita pointed downward.

“Security is on level B2.””

Ethan nodded.

They descended.

Two flights.

Then three.

On the fourth landing, Ethan noticed something scratched into the painted wall.

A small letter.

S.

He stopped.

Lupita noticed.

“What?””

He touched it.

The mark looked old.

Very old.

“Sara used to leave notes for me,” he said.

Lupita didn't understand.

“She'd write one letter on places she knew I'd notice.””

“What letter?””

“E.””

“For Ethan.””

He nodded.

“But this is S.””

Lupita looked at the mark.

“Sarah?””

Ethan didn't answer.

A cold sensation passed through him.

Three years ago, Sarah's favorite hiding place for gifts had been the hotel.

She loved surprises.

She once hid a birthday present for him in a linen closet.

He had spent an hour searching the penthouse before she finally laughed and led him to it.

At the time, he had accused her of being impossible.

She'd kissed him and said, “That's why you married me.””

The memory hurt.

But it also gave him an idea.

“Lupita.””

“Yes?””

“How well do you know the old parts of this building?””

She frowned.

“I've worked here fourteen years.””

“Before the renovation?””

“All of it.””

“Was there ever a private medical room?””

Lupita's eyes widened.

“What?””

“A medical room.””

She stared at him.

“There was.””

“Where?””

She hesitated.

“Why?””

“Because my wife received treatment here.””

Lupita's face changed.

“She was treated here?””

“Not officially.””

Ethan remembered something Sarah had said during her final year.

She had never trusted hospital cafeterias.

She hated the smell of disinfectant.

She had once joked that if she ever needed another infusion, she would rather do it in a broom closet.

At the time, Ethan had laughed.

Now the memory felt different.

“There used to be a small medical suite beneath the executive floor,” Lupita said slowly.

“Before my time, they used it for visiting executives. It was sealed after the new administration took over.””

“Where?””

“B2.””

Ethan stared at the stairs.

“Then that's where we're going.””

The security level was almost completely dark.

A single emergency light cast a red glow over rows of monitors.

The room was empty.

No guards.

No employees.

Ethan placed Lily carefully in a chair.

“She'll wake up if I move too quickly.””

Lupita nodded.

He walked toward the security console.

Every camera feed was black.

Not disconnected.

Blocked.

He touched the keyboard.

“Can you access archived footage?””

Lupita shook her head.

“Not from my credentials.””

“Do you have any?””

“Housekeeping.””

“Try.””

She sat at the console and entered her employee number.

For three seconds, nothing happened.

Then the screen changed.

*ACCESS DENIED.*

Lupita stepped back.

Ethan studied the message.

“Someone locked you out.””

“I'm not supposed to have access to security.””

“You've worked here fourteen years.””

“Yes.””

“That's exactly why.””

He took out his phone.

The corporate security app required facial authentication.

He scanned his face.

The system loaded.

Then froze.

A message appeared.

*ADMINISTRATOR ACCESS SUSPENDED.*

Ethan stared.

“Interesting.””

Lupita looked at him.

“What?””

“My own security access has been suspended.””

“Can they do that?””

“Not without board approval.””

He looked at the time.

11:47 p.m.

“The board doesn't meet this late.””

Something scraped outside the door.

Lupita froze.

Ethan turned.

The sound came again.

A metal cart rolling slowly across the corridor.

Then it stopped.

Silence.

Ethan motioned for Lupita to stay back.

He moved toward the door.

Before he reached it, someone spoke from the other side.

“Ethan.””

Michael.

Again.

Ethan didn't open it.

“You have one minute.””

“I'm alone.””

“You were alone upstairs.””

“I never made it downstairs.””

Ethan frowned.

“What happened?””

“I need you to listen to me.””

“Go ahead.””

Michael inhaled.

“Three years ago, Sarah found out that someone inside Vance Hospitality was moving money.””

Ethan's expression tightened.

“How much?””

“Almost nineteen million dollars.””

Ethan went still.

“That would have triggered an audit.””

“It should have.””

“Then why didn't it?””

“Because the money wasn't being moved from the company.””

Michael's voice lowered.

“It was being moved between shell corporations owned by people who had access to the company.””

Ethan stared at the door.

“Who?””

“I can't say it through a hotel wall.””

“You're already saying it.””

“I need you to understand something first.””

“What?””

“Sarah wasn't investigating them because she suspected theft.””

Ethan's pulse quickened.

“She was investigating them because she discovered payments connected to her own medical care.””

His expression changed.

“What does that mean?””

Michael didn't answer.

“Michael.””

“I'll show you.””

“Show me what?””

“Room 12.””

Ethan's forehead creased.

“Room 12?””

“Old medical suite. B2.””

Lupita looked at Ethan.

She nodded.

She knew the room.

Michael continued.

“There's a file hidden inside the wall.””

“How do you know?””

“Because Sarah told me.””

Ethan's voice became dangerously quiet.

“Then why didn't you tell me three years ago?””

Silence.

“Michael.””

“I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“That whoever was behind it had already killed her.””

Ethan felt the words strike somewhere deep inside him.

“You think Sarah was murdered?””

“I think the version of her death you were given was incomplete.””

Ethan's eyes shut briefly.

“I saw her die.””

“I know.””

“I was in the room.””

“I know.””

“She stopped breathing in front of me.””

“I know.””

“Then explain how any of this makes sense.””

Michael's voice cracked.

“Because she may not have stopped breathing because of what they told you.””

Ethan opened his eyes.

“Wait.””

He suddenly remembered the photograph.

Sarah in the blue sweater.

Emma beside her.

The date.

Three months before her death.

The photograph had been taken inside this very hotel.

“Michael.””

“Yes?””

“Was Sarah ever treated here?””

A long silence followed.

Then:

“Yes.””

Lupita covered her mouth.

Ethan's stomach dropped.

“How many times?””

“I don't know.””

“You just said she told you about the medical suite.””

“I wasn't there.””

“Then who was?””

“Emma.””

Ethan understood.

“Emma knew.””

“Yes.””

“And Daniel?””

Another silence.

“Daniel knew about the room.””

Ethan's face hardened.

“Then why is he still general manager?””

“I don't know.””

“You were regional operations director for four years. Don't tell me you don't know.””

“I was pushed out.””

Ethan blinked.

“What?””

“They reassigned me eleven months ago.””

“To where?””

“Seattle.””

“You never went.””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because I found evidence that someone was monitoring me.””

Ethan stepped away from the door.

“You disappeared.””

“I was trying to stay alive.””

Lily stirred in the chair.

“Daddy…”

Ethan immediately turned.

“I'm here.””

Her eyes remained closed.

“I had a bad dream.””

“It's okay.””

“Mommy was calling me.””

Ethan felt his chest tighten.

“What did she say?””

Lily opened her eyes.

“She said not to open the door.””

A chill moved through the room.

Lupita looked at Ethan.

Michael heard her through the door.

“Don't open it,” he said sharply.

Ethan looked at the handle.

“I wasn't going to.””

A metallic click sounded.

The handle moved.

Someone had just tried to open the door from the hallway.

Michael cursed.

“Move away!””

Ethan grabbed Lily.

Lupita ducked behind the security console.

The door handle moved again.

Harder.

Then someone slammed into the door.

The frame shook.

Lily screamed.

“Daddy!””

“I'm here!””

A third impact.

The old metal door groaned.

Ethan scanned the room.

There was another exit.

He remembered the security floor plan.

Storage room.

Emergency generator corridor.

Medical suite access.

He pointed.

“Lupita, take Lily.””

“What?””

“Now.””

She grabbed Lily.

Ethan pulled the emergency release on the side door.

It opened into a dark corridor.

They ran.

Behind them, the security door burst inward.

Footsteps followed.

Several pairs.

Not one person.

At least three.

Lupita's breathing became ragged.

“Where are we going?””

“Room 12.””

“We could be trapped.””

“We already are.””

They turned left.

A narrow passage led toward the abandoned medical wing.

Ethan found an old steel door.

A faded sign read:

*EXECUTIVE MEDICAL SERVICES — CLOSED*

He pulled.

Locked.

He looked around.

Then noticed a rectangular panel beside the frame.

He opened it.

Inside was an old emergency key.

He tried it.

The lock clicked.

The door swung open.

Dust filled the air.

The corridor beyond smelled like antiseptic and age.

Lupita shivered.

“I've never been down here.””

Ethan pushed forward.

Room 12 was at the end.

He found it.

The number was nearly gone.

He opened the door.

A small examination room waited in darkness.

An old hospital bed.

A sink.

A cabinet.

A cracked monitor.

And on the wall—

a photograph.

Sarah.

Ethan stopped.

The photograph showed her sitting on the examination bed.

She looked tired.

But alive.

And beside her was a doctor Ethan had never met.

He stepped closer.

A name badge was visible.

*Dr. Adrian Cole.*

Ethan stared.

“Cole?””

Lupita whispered, “Emma?””

“Her father?””

“I don't know.””

He turned the photograph over.

A date.

Four months before Sarah's death.

Then a handwritten note.

*Ethan must never know about Room 12.*

His blood ran cold.

Lily clung to Lupita.

“Daddy…”

“I see it.””

“No.””

Lily shook her head.

She pointed toward the cabinet.

“Mommy said look there.””

Ethan turned.

“Mommy said that?””

Lily nodded.

“She told me in my dream.””

Ethan slowly approached the cabinet.

He pulled open the top drawer.

Empty.

Second drawer.

Empty.

Third.

Nothing but dust.

He knelt.

The cabinet had been bolted to the wall.

He remembered Michael's words.

A file hidden inside the wall.

Ethan ran his fingers along the back panel.

There.

A tiny seam.

He found a screwdriver inside the medical tray and pried the panel loose.

Behind it was a narrow metal compartment.

Inside sat a sealed envelope.

His name was written on it.

*ETHAN.*

His hands began to shake.

He opened it.

Inside was a hospital record.

A death certificate.

A handwritten statement.

And a small digital recorder.

Ethan looked at the date on the hospital record first.

He read it.

Then read it again.

His entire face went blank.

Lupita watched him.

“What does it say?””

Ethan couldn't answer.

He looked at the death certificate.

The official date of Sarah Vance's death was—

three days earlier than the date he remembered.

He checked the time.

Then the hospital record.

Then the handwritten statement.

A single sentence had been circled in red ink.

*Patient transferred alive at 11:42 p.m.*

Ethan's knees nearly gave way.

“Alive,” he whispered.

Lupita stepped closer.

“What?””

“She was alive.””

The room seemed to tilt.

Ethan stared at the recorder.

He pressed the button.

Static filled the room.

Then a familiar voice.

Weak.

Breathing heavily.

But unmistakable.

Sarah.

“If Ethan is hearing this…”

Ethan stopped breathing.

Lily's eyes widened.

“Mommy.””

The recording continued.

“…then they finally failed to keep him away.””

A pause.

Sarah's breathing became shaky.

“Ethan, you need to listen to me carefully.””

Ethan gripped the recorder so hard that his knuckles turned white.

“Do not trust Michael.””

Lupita gasped.

“And whatever they tell you about my death…”

Sarah paused.

A faint sound came from somewhere behind her on the recording.

A door opening.

Sarah's voice dropped to a whisper.

“I'm not dead.””

The recording cut off.

Silence.

Ethan stared at the device.

Then footsteps echoed outside Room 12.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Coming closer.

Lupita looked toward the door.

“Mr. Vance…”

Ethan stood.

He slipped the evidence into his jacket.

“Get behind me.””

The footsteps stopped.

A shadow appeared beneath the door.

Then a voice spoke softly from the other side.

A woman's voice.

“Ethan?””

He froze.

He knew that voice.

He had heard it in his dreams for three years.

And for one impossible second, his heart forgot how to beat.

May you like

Sarah's voice whispered through the darkness.

“Please open the door.””
