Chapter 6: The Woman in the Service Tunnel
Ethan ran until the archive door disappeared behind him.
Lupita kept pace, one hand gripping the sleeve of her maroon uniform and the other wrapped around Lily's backpack. Ethan carried his daughter against his chest, her arms locked around his neck.
“Where?”” Lupita whispered.
“Back the way we came.””
“That leads to the freight elevator.””
“I know.””
“What about whoever's waiting for us?””
Ethan didn't slow.
“They want me frightened.””
“How do you know?””
“Because they keep giving me opportunities to run.””
He rounded the corner.
The emergency corridor was empty.
No guards.
No footsteps.
No voices.
That frightened him more than an armed man would have.
“Keep moving,” he said.
They reached the freight elevator.
Ethan pressed the button.
Nothing.
Again.
Still nothing.
Lily lifted her head.
“Daddy.””
“Yes?””
“That's not the elevator.””
Ethan looked down.
“What?””
She pointed toward the wall beside them.
“Mommy showed me.””
Lupita frowned.
“Showed her what?””
Lily slipped from Ethan's arms and walked toward a rusted service door.
Ethan caught her hand.
“Don't go anywhere alone.””
She pointed at the door.
“There.””
A small red mark had been painted near the bottom.
A star.
The same shape as Sarah's necklace.
Ethan crouched.
The door didn't appear on the hotel's current floor plan.
He ran his fingers along the frame.
It moved.
A hidden latch clicked.
The door opened inward.
Beyond it was another tunnel.
Lupita stared into the darkness.
“I've worked here fourteen years.””
Ethan nodded.
“And you've never seen this?””
“No.””
“Neither have I.””
They stepped inside.
The tunnel was barely wide enough for two people.
Old pipes ran along the ceiling.
Water dripped somewhere in the darkness.
The air smelled of concrete and damp earth.
Lily stayed between them.
After twenty feet, the tunnel split.
Left.
Right.
There were no signs.
No cameras.
No emergency lights.
Ethan looked at Lily.
“Which way?””
She pointed right.
“How do you know?””
“Mommy went that way.””
Ethan's heart hammered.
“Lily, when did Mommy go this way?””
She thought about it.
“In the dream.””
He nodded slowly.
“Okay.””
They went right.
After another fifty feet, they came to a steel door.
This one had no handle.
Only a narrow panel.
Ethan tried pushing.
Nothing.
He found a keypad.
Four digits.
He stared.
Then remembered the time displayed on the elevator.
11:42.
He entered 1142.
The panel flashed green.
The door opened.
Inside was a small room.
Not an office.
Not a storage room.
A bedroom.
There was a narrow bed.
A dresser.
A lamp.
A stack of books.
A ceramic mug.
A folded blanket.
And on the wall, pinned above the desk, were photographs.
Lily at age three.
Lily at four.
Lily at five.
Lily on her first day of kindergarten.
Lily asleep in Ethan's arms.
Lily eating pancakes.
Lily running through a Denver park.
Lily standing beside Sarah's grave.
Ethan stopped.
His face drained of color.
“Someone's been watching her.””
Lupita whispered, “For years.””
Ethan stepped closer to the photographs.
Every image had a date.
Some were taken from a distance.
Some through windows.
Some from inside buildings.
One showed Lily entering her school.
Another showed Ethan picking her up after class.
Another showed Sarah's grave.
A red line had been drawn through that photograph.
Underneath was written:
*SHE STILL BELIEVES HER MOTHER IS DEAD.*
Ethan's stomach turned.
He lifted another picture.
It was Lily on the airplane that evening.
Taken from directly behind them.
The same angle the little girl had described.
The woman had been sitting behind them.
Ethan's eyes moved across the room.
“She's been here.””
Lupita nodded.
“Sarah?””
“Or whoever is pretending to be her.””
He didn't know what frightened him more.
On the desk sat a small wooden box.
Ethan opened it.
Inside were dozens of children's drawings.
All addressed to Mommy.
Lupita picked one up.
“Your daughter made these.””
Ethan nodded.
“I thought she lost them.””
A drawing showed a family of three holding hands.
Underneath, Lily had written:
*DADDY, ME, AND MOMMY.*
Another showed Sarah standing under a yellow sun.
Another showed a hotel.
At the bottom was a single sentence:
*MOMMY LIVES HERE.*
Ethan stared at the drawing.
Then noticed handwriting beside it.
Not Lily's.
*ONE DAY SHE WILL KNOW WHY.*
A noise came from behind them.
The door clicked.
Ethan spun around.
A woman stood in the doorway.
Long dark hair.
Blue sweater.
Silver star necklace.
Ethan's world stopped.
Lupita instinctively moved Lily behind herself.
The woman didn't come closer.
She simply looked at Ethan.
Neither spoke.
Finally, Ethan whispered:
“Sarah.””
The woman's eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
Lily pushed past Lupita.
“Mommy!””
The woman dropped to her knees.
“Rose.””
Lily ran to her.
Ethan grabbed Lily's arm before she could reach the woman.
“Wait.””
The woman's face broke.
“I understand.””
She stayed where she was.
“Ethan, I understand.””
“You don't get near her.””
“She is my daughter.””
“Then prove it.””
The woman nodded.
“Ask me.””
Ethan's mind raced.
He needed something no one else could know.
“What did Lily say when she lost her first tooth?””
Sarah smiled through tears.
“She thought the tooth fairy was a government employee.””
Lily giggled.
Ethan didn't.
“Not enough.””
Sarah nodded.
“When she was four, she hid your wedding ring in the cereal cabinet because she thought you'd forgotten Mom's birthday.””
Lily looked up at Ethan.
“You found it in the cereal.””
He stared at Sarah.
“You remember.””
“I remember everything.””
She wiped tears from her cheek.
“Every day.””
Ethan's voice cracked.
“Then why did you let me bury you?””
Sarah looked down.
“I didn't.””
The sentence struck him.
“What?””
“I never let you bury me.””
Ethan took a step forward.
“You were declared dead.””
“I know.””
“You were in a hospital bed.””
“I know.””
“I held your hand.””
“I know.””
“They told me your heart stopped.””
Sarah shook her head.
“My heart did stop.””
Ethan stared.
“What?””
“Not permanently.””
She looked toward Lupita.
“Can we sit?””
“No.””
Sarah accepted that.
“Then listen.””
She stood slowly.
“I had been investigating the financial transfers for weeks. I found out the money wasn't just being stolen. It was paying for something.””
“Something?””
“A private medical network.””
Ethan frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“People with enough money could receive treatments that weren't available publicly.””
He stared at her.
“And you?””
“I became one of their patients.””
Lupita looked shocked.
“You were sick.””
“Yes.””
Sarah touched the side of her head.
“My disease wasn't progressing the way the doctors told you.””
Ethan's face tightened.
“You were dying.””
“I was getting worse.””
“That is not the same thing.””
“No.””
Sarah took a breath.
“But the treatment worked.””
Ethan stared at her.
“Worked?””
“For a while.””
“Then why disappear?””
“Because the treatment wasn't free.””
Ethan's expression hardened.
“What did they want?””
Sarah looked directly at him.
“The company.””
Silence.
“Their network was failing,” she continued.
“They needed a legitimate international corporation to move money without attracting attention. Vance Hospitality was perfect.””
“They wanted to use my company.””
“They wanted to own it.””
Ethan looked toward the photographs.
“And Lily?””
Sarah's eyes filled again.
“That was the leverage.””
She whispered:
“They told me if I refused, they'd take her.””
Ethan's jaw tightened.
“Who?””
“I never saw the real person.””
“Someone gave the orders.””
“Yes.””
“Emma?””
Sarah shook her head.
“Emma was trapped.””
“Michael?””
“No.””
Ethan stared at her.
“You told me not to trust Michael.””
“I told you that on the recording because I didn't know who might have access to it.””
She shook her head.
“Michael was trying to help.””
Ethan's eyes narrowed.
“You're saying Michael spent eleven months pretending to disappear?””
“He was protecting evidence.””
“Then why did he accuse me?””
“Because he needed you angry enough to stop asking questions.””
Ethan looked away.
That explanation didn't sit comfortably.
“You could have contacted me.””
Sarah's eyes dropped.
“I tried.””
“How?””
“Letters.””
“I never got them.””
“I know.””
“Calls?””
“Intercepted.””
“Emails?””
“Blocked.””
Ethan laughed bitterly.
“So you just watched me mourn you?””
Sarah flinched.
“I watched you survive.””
“That isn't an answer.””
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“But it's the truth.””
Ethan looked at her.
Three years of grief.
Three years of raising Lily alone.
Three years of waking every morning and knowing his daughter had to grow up without her mother.
And Sarah had been somewhere in the shadows.
Alive.
Watching.
Waiting.
His anger finally broke through.
“You should have found a way.””
“I tried.””
“You should have fought harder.””
“I did.””
“You should have come home.””
“I wanted to.””
“Then why didn't you?””
Sarah's eyes filled.
“Because the first time I escaped, they found me.””
She touched the scar near her hairline.
“They brought Lily to me.””
Ethan went still.
“What?””
“They took her from school for nineteen minutes.””
His blood turned cold.
“They didn't hurt her.””
“They didn't have to.””
Sarah looked at him.
“They sent me a photograph of her sitting in a van.””
Ethan closed his eyes.
“They told me that was the last warning.””
Lily stepped closer to Sarah.
“Mommy?””
Sarah looked down.
The little girl was crying.
“Did you stay away because of me?””
Sarah dropped to her knees.
“No, baby.””
She opened her arms.
“I stayed away because I loved you.””
Ethan watched Lily slowly walk into her mother's arms.
Sarah held her.
Her entire body shook.
“My Rose.””
Lily pressed her face into Sarah's shoulder.
“I knew you weren't gone.””
Ethan looked away.
He couldn't watch.
Not yet.
Then Lupita noticed something.
“Mr. Vance.””
Ethan turned.
She pointed toward the desk.
There was an old computer.
The screen was on.
A live countdown was running.
*00:18:42*
Ethan stepped toward it.
“What is that?””
Sarah's face changed instantly.
“No.””
She pulled Lily back.
“What?””
“They know I'm here.””
The countdown continued.
17:58.
17:57.
Ethan looked at Sarah.
“What happens at zero?””
Sarah's voice dropped.
“The hotel locks down.””
“That already happened.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“What happened upstairs was a warning.””
“What happens at zero?””
Sarah stared at the screen.
“They purge the archive.””
Ethan's expression hardened.
“All the evidence?””
“Everything.””
“How?””
“Fire suppression system.””
Lupita's eyes widened.
“You mean fire?””
“Not exactly.””
Sarah shook her head.
“The archive is underground. They flood it with chemical suppressant and overload the electrical systems.””
Ethan looked at the countdown.
16:49.
“Can we stop it?””
Sarah nodded.
“Maybe.””
“Then show me.””
Sarah hesitated.
“You need to understand something.””
“What?””
“The person controlling this hotel isn't after the company anymore.””
Ethan stared at her.
“Then what do they want?””
Sarah's eyes moved to Lily.
“They want her.””
Lily looked confused.
“Why?””
Sarah pulled her closer.
“Because she knows something.””
Ethan felt a wave of fear.
“What does she know?””
Sarah looked at her daughter.
“Three years ago, before I disappeared, I gave Lily something.””
“What?””
“A memory.””
Ethan frowned.
“She was four.””
“I know.””
“She couldn't remember something like that.””
“She doesn't remember consciously.””
Sarah pointed toward Lily's backpack.
“But she drew it.””
Ethan opened the backpack.
Inside was the same child's drawing from the corridor.
The house.
The family.
Mommy coming home.
Sarah pointed to the bottom corner.
“Look at the symbol.””
Ethan examined it.
A small circle crossed by three lines.
It looked familiar.
He searched his memory.
Then his face changed.
“The Vance Foundation.””
Sarah nodded.
“It was on the original trust documents.””
Ethan looked at her.
“What does it mean?””
“It marks ownership.””
“Ownership of what?””
Sarah took a breath.
“The foundation doesn't own the money.””
She looked toward the hidden room.
“It owns the treatment network.””
Ethan stared.
“And Lily?””
“She is the only person legally connected to the original trust.””
Silence.
Ethan suddenly understood.
The company wasn't the prize.
The foundation wasn't the prize.
Lily was.
Because if Sarah died and Ethan remained unaware of the hidden trust, control would eventually pass to the person designated in the original documents.
Their daughter.
Sarah's voice softened.
“They can't access it while you're alive.””
“Why?””
“Because you are the legal guardian.””
“And if something happens to me…”
“They get her.””
The countdown reached ten minutes.
Ethan looked at Sarah.
“Who is behind all this?””
Sarah didn't answer.
Her expression changed.
She stared beyond Ethan.
At the doorway.
Ethan turned.
The woman standing there wasn't alone.
Daniel Mercer stepped into the room.
Behind him came Emma Cole.
And behind Emma stood Michael.
But none of them looked like enemies.
They looked terrified.
Daniel raised both hands.
“Ethan.””
Ethan immediately moved Lily behind him.
“If you take one more step, I'll—”
“You need to listen.””
“No.””
Daniel looked toward Sarah.
Then at the countdown.
“Eight minutes.””
Ethan said nothing.
Daniel swallowed.
“We're out of time.””
Sarah stepped forward.
“Ethan, don't trust him.””
Michael shook his head.
“That's exactly what she wants you to think.””
Emma began crying.
“Please.””
Ethan stared at all three.
“Which one of you is lying?””
Nobody answered.
Then the computer screen changed.
The countdown disappeared.
A message replaced it.
*PURGE INITIATED EARLY.*
Daniel's face went white.
“That isn't possible.””
Sarah whispered:
“He's here.””
Ethan looked at her.
“Who?””
Sarah's eyes filled with fear.
“The man who's been controlling all of us.””
The lights flickered.
A speaker above the door crackled.
And a man's voice spoke softly from somewhere inside the walls.
“Hello, Sarah.””
She froze.
Ethan looked at her.
The voice continued.
“You've kept my family away from me for long enough.””
Ethan's blood went cold.
Sarah grabbed Lily.
May you like
“Run.””
The entire underground level erupted with alarms.
