Chapter 8: The Husband Who Lost Everything He Thought He Owned

The emergency board meeting was scheduled for Monday morning.

By then, the entire corporate world had begun watching Vance Enterprises.

The company stock had become unstable.

Investors wanted answers.

Employees wanted reassurance.

And Julian wanted one thing above all else.

A way to survive.

He arrived at headquarters before anyone else.

The building looked exactly the same.

The marble floors.

The glass walls.

The expensive artwork.

Everything remained unchanged.

But Julian felt like a stranger walking through someone else's empire.

Because now he understood something.

The building had never belonged to him.

The power had never belonged to him.

He had only been allowed to hold it.

The receptionist looked nervous when she saw him.

"Good morning, Mr. Vance.""

He nodded.

"Good morning.""

She hesitated.

Then quietly said:

"Your access badge has been updated.""

Julian stopped.

"What?""

"Security issued a new access level.""

"Why?""

She looked uncomfortable.

"I was told to direct questions to administration.""

He stared at her.

For years, employees had rushed to greet him.

Now even the receptionist was afraid to answer him.

He continued toward the executive floor.

The security doors opened.

But only after a delay.

A small reminder.

Someone had changed his permissions.

Inside the conference room, Clara was already there.

She sat beside the legal team.

Not across from them.

With them.

The difference was obvious.

Julian took his seat.

Thomas began.

"This meeting concerns the ongoing governance review.""

Julian interrupted.

"I want to know if I'm being removed.""

Thomas remained calm.

"The board has not made a final decision.""

"But you're considering it.""

"Yes.""

Julian looked at Clara.

"Because of her.""

Clara didn't react.

"No.""

Thomas answered.

"Because of documented concerns.""

Julian leaned forward.

"I have built this company.""

Clara finally spoke.

"No one is denying your contribution.""

"Then why am I being treated like a criminal?""

"Because leadership requires accountability.""

He looked at her.

"You really believe that?""

"Yes.""

"Even after everything?""

She understood what he meant.

Their marriage.

Their history.

The years together.

Her expression softened slightly.

"Especially after everything.""

The answer hurt him more than anger.

Because anger meant she still cared.

This meant she had accepted the truth.

The legal team presented the findings.

Unauthorized vendor payments.

Incomplete documentation.

Conflicts of interest.

Misuse of company resources.

Julian listened.

But his mind was elsewhere.

On Clara.

On the photograph.

On Natalie.

On his father-in-law's final night.

Finally, he couldn't take it anymore.

"I need to speak with Clara privately.""

Thomas looked at her.

She nodded.

The room cleared.

For the first time in days, they were alone.

Julian stood.

"Did you know?""

Clara looked up.

"Know what?""

"About my past with your father.""

"Not until recently.""

"Did you know he planned to remove me?""

"Yes.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

She stared at him.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

The question stopped him.

Because there was no answer that didn't expose him.

"I loved you.""

Clara looked away.

"Maybe.""

"Maybe?""

"Julian, love is not just a feeling.""

She looked back.

"It's what you choose when nobody is watching.""

He swallowed.

"I made mistakes.""

"Yes.""

"I was afraid.""

"Yes.""

"I didn't want to lose everything.""

"And you decided I was something you could sacrifice.""

"No.""

"You did.""

His voice became desperate.

"I never wanted to hurt you.""

Clara's eyes filled briefly.

"But you did.""

Silence.

Then she said something he never expected.

"I spent eight years wondering why I wasn't enough.""

Julian looked at her.

"And now I understand.""

She stood.

"It was never about me being enough.""

She walked toward the door.

"It was about you needing someone to blame.""

That evening, a new article appeared.

Not from a gossip outlet.

From a major financial publication.

The headline was simple.

*VANCE ENTERPRISES FOUNDER CLAIMS INDEPENDENCE, BUT DOCUMENTS TELL DIFFERENT STORY*

Inside were details about Sterling's investment.

The original agreements.

The ownership structure.

The years of financial support.

The article did not call Julian a fraud.

It didn't need to.

The facts were enough.

Within hours, investors began withdrawing support.

Board members received calls.

Employees searched internal systems.

And Julian's carefully built image began collapsing.

But the most devastating moment came at 10:17 p.m.

When Clara received a message.

Not from Daniel.

Not from Natalie.

From Julian.

*I know what happened to your father.*

She stared at the screen.

A second message arrived.

*But you need to hear the whole story before you decide what I am.*

Clara read it again.

Then another message appeared.

*Because I wasn't the only person there that night.*

Her heart raced.

She immediately called him.

He answered after one ring.

"Clara.""

"Who else was there?""

Silence.

"Julian.""

His voice was barely audible.

"Your father wasn't meeting me alone.""

"Who was with him?""

Another pause.

Then:

"Someone you trust.""

Clara froze.

"Who?""

Julian whispered a name.

May you like

And when she heard it, she dropped the phone onto the desk.

Because the person he named was the last person she ever expected.
