Chapter 9: The Betrayal Hidden in Her Own Family
Clara did not sleep.
The name Julian had spoken remained trapped in her mind.
She replayed the conversation dozens of times.
The hesitation.
The fear.
The certainty.
Someone she trusted had been there the night her father died.
Someone close enough to hide the truth.
Someone close enough to hurt her.
At sunrise, Daniel found her already working.
"You haven't rested.""
"No.""
"Because of Julian?""
She looked at him.
"Because of what he told me.""
Daniel immediately understood.
"What did he say?""
Clara hesitated.
Then she answered.
"He said my father wasn't meeting him alone.""
Daniel became still.
"Who was there?""
Clara looked at the file on her desk.
"Evelyn Vance.""
Daniel frowned.
"Julian's mother?""
"Yes.""
The room went quiet.
Because everyone knew Evelyn.
The elegant socialite.
The woman who presented herself as the perfect mother.
The woman who had spent years criticizing Clara.
But nobody had ever considered her part of the story.
"Why would she be there?"" Daniel asked.
"I don't know.""
"Do you believe Julian?""
Clara looked at the question for a long time.
That was the hardest part.
Because Julian had lied to her.
Repeatedly.
But people who lied sometimes told the truth when it benefited them.
And sometimes the truth was more dangerous than the lie.
"I believe he knows something.""
That afternoon, Clara confronted Evelyn.
Not at the estate.
Not privately.
She invited her to the Sterling offices.
Because she wanted Evelyn to understand one thing.
This conversation would happen on Clara's ground.
Evelyn arrived wearing a designer suit and carrying the same confidence she had always carried.
Until she entered the office.
Until she saw the view.
Until she saw Clara sitting behind the desk.
Not as Julian's wife.
As someone untouchable.
"You wanted to see me.""
Clara nodded.
"Yes.""
Evelyn sat.
"I assume this is about Julian.""
"No.""
That surprised her.
"It's about my father.""
The color left Evelyn's face.
Only slightly.
But Clara noticed.
"You knew.""
Evelyn looked confused.
"Knew what?""
"Don't do that.""
The older woman became defensive.
"I don't know what you're accusing me of.""
"Then answer a simple question.""
Clara placed a photograph on the desk.
The same photograph.
"Where were you the night my father died?""
Evelyn stared.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then she whispered:
"Who gave you that?""
Clara's heart sank.
Because Evelyn hadn't denied it.
"You were there.""
Evelyn looked away.
"I didn't kill him.""
The sentence came too quickly.
Clara felt a chill.
"I didn't ask if you killed him.""
Evelyn closed her eyes.
She realized her mistake.
"Tell me the truth.""
For the first time, Evelyn looked old.
Not powerful.
Not arrogant.
Just tired.
"I was trying to protect my son.""
Clara felt sick.
"From what?""
"From losing everything.""
"Because my father was going to remove him.""
Evelyn said nothing.
"Wasn't he?""
Finally, she nodded.
"Yes.""
The answer cut deeper than Clara expected.
"What happened that night?""
Evelyn looked toward the window.
"Your father confronted Julian.""
"And?""
"He told him everything was over.""
Clara listened.
"Julian begged him.""
"Begged?""
"He said he would fix it.""
"And my father?""
"He refused.""
Evelyn's hands trembled.
"Then Julian left.""
Clara watched her carefully.
"Was that all?""
A long silence.
"No.""
The word was barely audible.
"What else?""
Evelyn looked at her.
"Your father didn't leave alone.""
"Who was with him?""
"I was.""
The room went silent.
Clara felt betrayed in a way she couldn't explain.
"You followed him?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"Because I wanted to make sure he didn't destroy my son's future.""
Clara stood.
"You were willing to destroy my father's life to save Julian's?""
"No.""
"Then what happened?""
Evelyn began crying.
Not dramatically.
Not like someone seeking sympathy.
Like someone who had carried something unbearable for too long.
"Your father knew.""
"Knew what?""
"That Julian had manipulated the company.""
Clara remained silent.
"And he knew I helped.""
The words echoed.
"You helped him?""
"I only helped with documents.""
"What documents?""
Evelyn looked down.
"The ownership restructuring.""
Clara felt numb.
"The same restructuring Julian denied?""
Evelyn nodded.
"I thought it was just business.""
"You helped him steal control.""
"No.""
"Then what was it?""
"A mistake.""
Clara laughed bitterly.
"Everyone has a different word for betrayal.""
Evelyn wiped her tears.
"Julian never planned for your father to die.""
"But he did.""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
Evelyn looked at her.
"Because someone else was there.""
Clara froze.
"Who?""
Evelyn hesitated.
Then she whispered:
"The person who has been pretending to help you find the truth.""
Clara's expression changed.
"No.""
Evelyn nodded.
"Yes.""
"You're lying.""
"I wish I was.""
"Who?""
Evelyn looked directly at her.
"The person you trust most.""
Clara's phone vibrated.
A message appeared.
From Daniel.
*I found something. We need to talk immediately.*
Clara stared at the screen.
Then at Evelyn.
And suddenly, the entire world she had rebuilt began to crack again.
Because the person she trusted most...
May you like
The person who had stood beside her through every crisis...
Might have been hiding the biggest secret of all.
