Chapter 6: The Woman Who Came Back for Revenge

Three days after the gala, Julian Vance's life looked completely different.

The newspapers did not mention his name as often as before.

They mentioned Clara's.

*THE PRIVATE BILLIONAIRE WHO CONTROLLED ONE OF AMERICA'S FASTEST-GROWING COMPANIES*

*VANCE ENTERPRISES FACES INTERNAL REVIEW*

The articles were carefully written.

Professional.

Respectful.

But Julian understood what they meant.

The world was beginning to realize that the man they had celebrated had never been standing alone.

He had been standing on someone else's foundation.

And that someone had finally stepped forward.

Inside Vance Enterprises headquarters, employees whispered whenever he walked by.

Not openly.

Not disrespectfully.

But enough.

Enough for him to notice.

Enough for him to feel the shift.

Power had a strange sound when it disappeared.

It sounded like silence.

Julian entered the executive conference room expecting a routine update.

Instead, he found Victoria waiting.

He stopped.

"What are you doing here?""

She looked different.

The confidence she carried at the gala was gone.

"I need to talk.""

"We have nothing to discuss.""

Her expression hardened.

"Really?""

"Really.""

She placed a folder on the table.

"Then maybe you should look at this.""

Julian stared at it.

"What is it?""

"Something you should have known before you trusted me.""

He opened the folder.

Inside were copies of emails.

Messages between Victoria and another executive.

His eyes narrowed.

"What is this?""

"Evidence.""

"Of what?""

"That I wasn't the only person benefiting from those vendor payments.""

He looked up.

"What are you saying?""

Victoria sat down.

"I'm saying you think I betrayed you because I was careless.""

"Didn't you?""

She looked away.

"Maybe.""

The honesty surprised him.

"But there were other people involved.""

Julian flipped through the pages.

Names.

Dates.

Transactions.

His own approval signatures.

And then he saw something that made his blood run cold.

A message from a private account.

*Keep Julian focused on expansion. He won't notice the internal restructuring.*

The sender was unknown.

But the timing was clear.

Someone had been manipulating him.

"You knew about this?""

Victoria shook her head.

"I knew something was happening.""

"And you said nothing.""

She looked at him.

"You didn't exactly make honesty easy.""

The words hurt because they were true.

"Why are you showing me this now?""

"Because I found out something else.""

"What?""

Victoria hesitated.

"Your wife isn't the only one who has been keeping secrets.""

Julian looked at her.

"What does that mean?""

Victoria opened another document.

A photograph.

An old photograph.

Julian stared.

It showed Clara's father.

Alexander Sterling.

Standing outside a restaurant.

Beside him was another person.

A woman Julian recognized.

His face went pale.

"No.""

Victoria watched him carefully.

"You know her?""

He didn't answer.

Because he did.

Everyone did.

She was the one person who could destroy the story he had spent years building.

The woman who had disappeared after Alexander Sterling's death.

The woman Julian had hoped would never return.

"Who is she?"" Victoria asked.

Julian slowly lowered the photograph.

"My former business partner.""

"And?""

"And someone who should not be alive.""

Victoria frowned.

"What?""

Julian looked toward the window.

For the first time, fear replaced arrogance completely.

"Her name is Natalie Cross.""

"Why does that matter?""

Because Natalie knew the truth.

Because Natalie had been there the night Alexander died.

Because Natalie was the one person who could prove whether Julian had been a victim...

or something much worse.

That evening, Clara received a visitor.

The woman standing outside her gate was older than she remembered.

But the eyes were the same.

Sharp.

Determined.

Full of secrets.

The security guard called.

"Ms. Sterling, a woman named Natalie Cross is requesting to see you.""

Clara froze.

She knew that name.

Everyone in her father's inner circle knew it.

"Natalie Cross?""

"Yes.""

"Send her in.""

Minutes later, the woman entered the library.

She looked at Clara for a long moment.

Then she spoke.

"You look exactly like your father.""

Clara remained standing.

"Why are you here?""

Natalie placed a small envelope on the desk.

"Because I should have come five years ago.""

Clara did not touch it.

"What is that?""

"The truth.""

"About my father?""

Natalie nodded.

"And about your husband.""

The room became silent.

Clara stared at the envelope.

"Did Julian kill my father?""

Natalie looked away.

"I don't know.""

That answer shocked her.

"You don't know?""

"I know he was involved.""

Clara's heart tightened.

"How?""

Natalie took a breath.

"Because I was there that night.""

"Where?""

"With your father.""

"Why?""

"Because he had discovered something.""

"What?""

Natalie looked directly at her.

"He discovered Julian wasn't just hiding money.""

Clara felt the air leave her lungs.

"He was hiding a plan.""

"A plan for what?""

Natalie pushed the envelope closer.

"Take this.""

Clara opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

A photograph taken the night her father died.

Julian stood beside Alexander Sterling's car.

Not far away.

Not by coincidence.

Beside the vehicle.

Clara stared.

Her hands trembled.

"I don't understand.""

Natalie whispered:

"Your husband didn't just inherit your father's company.""

She paused.

"He helped create the situation where your father lost control of it.""

Clara looked at the photograph again.

And for the first time in eight years...

May you like

she wondered if her marriage had begun with love.

Or with a carefully designed lie.
