Chapter 10: The Ally Who Was Never on Her Side
Clara arrived at Sterling Investment Group headquarters fifteen minutes later.
She did not remember the drive.
She remembered leaving Evelyn behind in the office.
She remembered the security elevator opening.
She remembered Daniel standing outside the conference room with a look she had never seen before.
Concern.
Not professional concern.
Personal concern.
That frightened her more.
"Daniel.""
He immediately stepped aside.
"Come in.""
The conference room lights were dimmed. Several monitors displayed documents, archived communications, and security reports.
Clara walked inside.
"What did you find?""
Daniel did not answer immediately.
That hesitation told her everything.
"Daniel.""
He placed a file on the table.
"Before I explain, I need you to know something.""
Her eyes narrowed.
"What?""
"I never wanted you to see this.""
"Why?""
"Because I hoped I was wrong.""
Clara stared at him.
The words were too familiar.
Everyone had hoped they were wrong.
Her father.
Natalie.
Even herself.
"Open the file.""
Daniel did.
The first document appeared.
It was a security report.
The second was a communication archive.
The third was a personnel record.
And then Clara saw the name.
*Daniel Brooks.*
She looked up.
"What is this?""
Daniel remained silent.
"Answer me.""
He took a breath.
"Before I became your executive assistant, I worked for Alexander Sterling.""
Clara froze.
"I know.""
"No.""
His voice was quiet.
"You don't know everything.""
The room suddenly felt smaller.
"You worked for my father?""
"Yes.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because he asked me not to.""
The answer shocked her.
"My father?""
Daniel nodded.
"Three weeks before his death, Alexander asked me to monitor certain internal activities at Vance Enterprises.""
Clara looked at the documents.
"The investigation.""
"Yes.""
"And you knew Julian was involved.""
Daniel looked away.
"I knew he was hiding things.""
"That's not what I asked.""
Silence.
Clara stepped closer.
"Did you know he was dangerous?""
Daniel closed his eyes briefly.
"I knew he was desperate.""
The distinction irritated her.
"Everyone keeps using softer words.""
"Because we don't have proof of the worst possibility.""
"Then why hide this from me?""
Daniel looked at her.
"Because your father made me promise.""
"What did he say?""
Daniel's expression changed.
For the first time, Clara saw how much he had carried.
"He told me that if anything happened to him, my first responsibility was protecting you.""
Her eyes filled.
"Protecting me from what?""
Daniel looked at the documents.
"From everyone who wanted what you had.""
The truth came out slowly.
Painfully.
Daniel had not been a random employee.
He had been Alexander Sterling's most trusted investigator.
When Alexander became suspicious of Julian's actions, he did not immediately confront him. He wanted proof.
He wanted facts.
He wanted to know whether the young man his daughter loved was simply ambitious...
or dangerous.
Daniel had collected evidence.
Financial transfers.
Private agreements.
Communication records.
But before Alexander could complete the investigation, he died.
After the accident, Daniel followed Alexander's final instruction.
Protect Clara.
Stay close.
Never reveal information until the truth could be proven.
"I thought I was doing the right thing," Daniel said.
Clara looked at him.
"By lying to me?""
"By keeping you alive.""
The words stopped her.
"What does that mean?""
Daniel opened another file.
Inside was a message Alexander had written but never sent.
*If anything happens to me, do not allow Clara to trust anyone connected to Vance Enterprises.*
Clara read it again.
And again.
Her father had known.
He had been afraid.
And she had spent years believing his death was simply an accident.
"Why now?"" she whispered.
Daniel answered honestly.
"Because now everyone who benefited from his silence is becoming afraid.""
Across the city, Julian sat alone in his apartment.
The luxury apartment he had once considered proof of success now felt empty.
There were no calls.
No assistants.
No investors asking for his attention.
Only silence.
Then his phone rang.
Evelyn.
He almost ignored it.
But he answered.
"What happened?""
Her voice was shaking.
"She knows.""
Julian stood immediately.
"Knows what?""
"Everything.""
His heart stopped.
"How?""
"Someone told her.""
"Who?""
Evelyn hesitated.
And Julian already knew.
"Daniel.""
The name felt like a weapon.
"That man.""
"He was your father's person.""
Julian's face darkened.
"I knew he was hiding something.""
"No," Evelyn whispered.
"You don't understand.""
"What?""
"Your father trusted him because Daniel knew the truth.""
Julian went silent.
"The truth about what?""
Evelyn started crying.
"The truth about that night.""
Julian drove to meet Evelyn immediately.
They met in a private room at a quiet restaurant.
No cameras.
No reporters.
No witnesses.
The same kind of place where people went when they had secrets.
"What did Daniel tell her?""
Evelyn looked exhausted.
"Enough.""
"Enough for what?""
"Enough for her to hate us.""
Julian laughed bitterly.
"She already hates me.""
"No.""
Evelyn looked at him.
"She is hurt.""
"Same thing.""
"No.""
Her voice became stronger.
"Hatred means she still wants something from you.""
Julian looked away.
"And what does she want?""
"The truth.""
He said nothing.
Because that was the one thing he had spent years avoiding.
"I never meant for any of this to happen.""
Evelyn stared at him.
"But it did.""
"I was trying to save the company.""
"You were trying to save yourself.""
His jaw tightened.
"You helped me.""
"I was wrong.""
The words surprised him.
"You?""
"Yes.""
She looked down.
"I thought protecting my son meant protecting his future.""
"And?""
"I didn't understand that I was protecting the person destroying it.""
Julian leaned back.
"You're blaming me now?""
"No.""
Evelyn's eyes filled.
"I'm blaming both of us.""
That night, Clara returned home with Daniel.
Not because she trusted him completely.
But because she needed answers.
The hidden office was filled with documents.
Evidence of years.
Years of secrets.
Daniel placed one final folder on the desk.
"This is the last thing.""
Clara opened it.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
Her father's handwriting.
Her hands trembled.
*Clara,*
*If you are reading this, then I was unable to explain everything myself.*
She stopped.
Her father.
Talking to her from the past.
*I want you to know that I never doubted your judgment. If Julian truly loves you, he will choose honesty over ambition. But if he chooses power, you must accept what that means.*
A tear fell onto the page.
She continued.
*The hardest truth in life is that sometimes the people we love are not the people we thought they were.*
Clara closed her eyes.
There was more.
The final line.
*Trust the person who brings you the truth, even if the truth hurts.*
She looked at Daniel.
And for the first time that day, she didn't know what to believe.
May you like
Because the truth had arrived.
But it had arrived from people who had all been hiding something.
