Chapter 5: The Name On The Document
I don't remember the drive to Sophie's school.
I only remember gripping the steering wheel so tightly my hands hurt.
Every possible nightmare ran through my mind.
Someone trying to take my daughter.
Someone using my own mistakes against me.
Someone deciding Sophie was something they could control.
When I arrived, the school principal was waiting outside.
His face looked serious.
"Mr. Sterling.""
"Where is my daughter?""
"She's inside with her teacher.""
I walked past him.
"Who tried to remove her?""
The principal exchanged a glance with the security officer.
Then he handed me a folder.
"This woman arrived with legal documents.""
I opened it.
My heart dropped.
The name at the bottom was Vanessa Vale.
The documents claimed she was acting as Sophie's guardian.
"Guardian?""
My voice was quiet.
The principal nodded.
"She said you were aware of the arrangement.""
I laughed once.
But there was no humor in it.
"I was not.""
The security officer spoke.
"Mr. Sterling, she became aggressive when we asked for confirmation.""
I looked up.
"Where is she now?""
"She left before police arrived.""
Of course she did.
She didn't want a conversation.
She wanted control.
I walked into Sophie's classroom.
The moment she saw me, she ran.
"Daddy!""
I caught her.
She buried her face against me.
"I thought you weren't coming.""
Those words hurt more than any accusation.
"I will always come for you.""
Her teacher, Mrs. Parker, approached quietly.
"Mr. Sterling, can I speak with you?""
I nodded.
She looked uncomfortable.
"I didn't know if I should say something before.""
"Say it now.""
She took a breath.
"Sophie has been different this year.""
My chest tightened.
"Different how?""
"Quiet.""
She looked down.
"She used to talk about her mother all the time. Then she stopped.""
I felt sick.
"Why?""
Mrs. Parker hesitated.
"She told me Vanessa said talking about Emily made you sad.""
I closed my eyes.
Emily.
My wife.
Sophie's mother.
The person whose memory I thought I was protecting.
But someone had been using that memory to silence my daughter.
"Did Sophie ever mention being hungry at school?""
The teacher's face changed.
"Yes.""
My stomach dropped.
"When?""
"Several times.""
"Why didn't anyone tell me?""
Mrs. Parker looked ashamed.
"Vanessa always brought her food later and said Sophie was being dramatic.""
I looked at my daughter.
A six-year-old child who had been asking adults for help.
And everyone believed the wrong person.
That evening, I returned home with Sophie.
But something felt different.
The mansion felt colder.
The moment we entered, Maria walked toward me.
"Sir.""
"What happened?""
She handed me another envelope.
"Someone left this at the door.""
I opened it.
Inside was a copy of a bank transfer.
My eyes scanned the details.
Then I saw the name.
Vanessa Vale.
The amount.
A shocking amount.
And the sender.
My company account.
I looked at Maria.
"What is this?""
She shook her head.
"I don't know.""
I looked closer.
The transfer had been approved using my digital signature.
But I had never made it.
Someone had accessed my accounts.
Someone had been planning something much bigger.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
From Vanessa.
*You should have stayed away, Richard. Now everyone will know the truth about what kind of father you really are.*
I stared at the screen.
Then another message arrived.
This one contained a photo.
A photo of Sophie.
Taken while she was sleeping.
My entire body went still.
May you like
Because Vanessa had added one sentence underneath.
*I warned you. You don't know who you're fighting.*
