Chapter 12: The Man Who Knew Everything
I didn't wait.
I went straight to Jonathan.
No lawyers.
No security.
No warning.
Just me.
When I entered his office, he looked tired.
Like he had been expecting me.
"You found the folder.""
I stopped.
"You knew about it.""
Jonathan looked away.
"Yes.""
My anger exploded.
"How long?""
"Since before Emily died.""
The room went silent.
I walked closer.
"You knew my wife was in danger.""
"I tried to protect her.""
"No.""
I shook my head.
"You protected secrets.""
Jonathan closed his eyes.
"Richard...""
"Did you love my family?""
His expression changed.
"More than you know.""
"Then why did you let this happen?""
He didn't answer.
And that silence was enough.
I turned toward the door.
Then he spoke.
"Because Emily made me promise.""
I stopped.
"What promise?""
Jonathan looked at me.
"To protect Sophie.""
I slowly turned back.
"From who?""
His voice dropped.
"From your father.""
I felt like the floor disappeared.
"My father was dead.""
"After he died.""
Jonathan stepped closer.
"He left people behind.""
"Who?""
Jonathan looked at me.
"People who wanted the company.""
"Who?""
He hesitated.
Then said:
"The person who helped him build everything.""
I stared.
"Who?""
Jonathan reached into his desk.
He pulled out a file.
Inside was a photograph.
A woman.
I recognized her immediately.
Claire.
My heart stopped.
"Claire?""
Jonathan nodded.
"She wasn't investigating Vanessa.""
"Then what was she doing?""
Jonathan looked at me.
"She was trying to take back what your father stole from her family.""
I couldn't breathe.
Everything was connected.
Every person.
Every secret.
Every lie.
Then Jonathan said the one thing I wasn't prepared for.
"Richard, Claire isn't the enemy.""
"Then who is?""
Jonathan looked toward the window.
"The person who has been controlling everyone from the beginning.""
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A distorted voice spoke.
"Congratulations, Richard.""
I froze.
"You finally found the truth.""
"Who are you?""
A quiet laugh.
Then:
"The person your father trusted more than anyone.""
The call ended.
At the exact same moment, my security alarm activated.
I checked the camera feed.
My mansion.
The living room.
Sophie.
And standing behind her...
May you like
was the person I thought I would never see again.
My father.
