Chapter 4: The Envelope That Changed Everything
I held the envelope in my hand for almost a full minute before opening it.
The woman in the red coat stood silently in my entryway.
She wasn't nervous.
She wasn't afraid.
She looked like someone who had been waiting for this exact moment.
Sophie stood behind me, holding onto my shirt.
"Daddy," she whispered, "is she bad?""
I looked down at my daughter.
"No, sweetheart.""
Then I looked back at the woman.
"But I need to know who she is.""
The woman nodded.
"My name is Claire Bennett.""
The name meant nothing to me.
"How do you know Vanessa?""
Claire's expression changed.
"Because Vanessa destroyed my family before she came into yours.""
I opened the envelope.
Inside were printed emails, photographs, and several documents.
At first, I didn't understand what I was looking at.
Then I saw Vanessa's name.
My stomach tightened.
"Where did you get these?""
Claire took a slow breath.
"I worked for Vanessa's previous employer.""
I looked through the papers.
There were messages between Vanessa and another person.
Messages about controlling people.
About manipulating situations.
About making herself appear innocent.
But one message made my fingers stop moving.
*Once Richard trusts me completely, everything will be easier.*
I stared at those words.
My vision blurred for a second.
Everything will be easier.
Not everything will be happier.
Not everything will be better.
Easier.
Like I was a problem to solve.
Like my daughter was an obstacle.
"Why are you showing me this now?"" I asked.
Claire looked at Sophie.
"Because I heard what happened.""
"How?""
Her face became serious.
"Because Vanessa told someone she finally found a way to make Sophie stop complaining.""
My blood ran cold.
"What does that mean?""
Claire looked away.
"Richard, Vanessa didn't just want your money.""
I waited.
"She wanted your entire life.""
The silence in the mansion felt unbearable.
I looked at Sophie.
She was holding her stuffed rabbit tightly.
A rabbit her mother had bought her.
A reminder of the woman who was no longer here.
"Claire," I said, "I need the truth.""
She nodded.
"I know.""
She handed me another photograph.
It was Vanessa.
Standing outside a building.
Beside a man I had never seen.
"When was this taken?""
"Two months ago.""
I looked closer.
The man was holding documents.
"What documents?""
Claire hesitated.
"Your daughter's custody papers.""
My hand froze.
"Custody papers?""
Claire nodded.
"Vanessa was preparing a legal case.""
"For what?""
Claire looked directly at me.
"To prove you were an absent father.""
The words hit harder than I expected.
Because part of me feared they were true.
I had provided everything.
Except time.
Except attention.
Except noticing.
Claire lowered her voice.
"She planned to argue that your work schedule made you incapable of caring for Sophie.""
I looked toward the stairs.
My daughter was standing there.
Listening.
"Sophie.""
She immediately looked guilty.
I walked toward her.
"Sweetheart, did Vanessa ever talk about me not being home?""
Sophie nodded slowly.
"She said you were too busy for me.""
My heart broke.
"Did you believe her?""
Sophie didn't answer.
She didn't need to.
I saw it in her eyes.
That was the moment I realized Vanessa had done something far worse than starving my daughter.
She had made Sophie feel unwanted.
I turned back to Claire.
"Where is Vanessa now?""
Claire looked surprised.
"You don't know?""
"No.""
She pulled out her phone.
"There was a message from her this morning.""
I took the phone.
One sentence appeared on the screen.
*Tell Richard whatever you want. By tonight, he will understand why Sophie can never stay with him.*
My grip tightened.
"What does she mean?""
Claire didn't answer.
Because at that moment, my phone rang.
The number was unknown.
I answered.
A man's voice came through.
"Richard Sterling?""
"Who is this?""
"You need to come to your daughter's school.""
My heart jumped.
"Why?""
There was a pause.
May you like
Then the man said:
"Because someone just tried to remove Sophie from the property.""
