Chapter 14: Emily’s Final Message
I replayed the recording three times.
Every time, the same thing happened.
My hands shook.
My chest tightened.
My entire understanding of the past collapsed.
Jonathan's voice was there.
Clear.
Real.
"I told you she was getting too close.""
Emily answered.
"You're making a mistake.""
Jonathan sounded angry.
"You don't understand what is at risk.""
Emily's voice became colder.
"My family is not a business problem.""
Then the recording ended.
I looked at my father.
"You had this.""
He nodded.
"Yes.""
"And you kept it from me.""
His eyes lowered.
"Yes.""
I wanted to hate him.
I wanted to blame him.
But after everything I learned, I knew one thing.
Everyone around me had been hiding something.
Everyone had a reason.
Everyone had a secret.
"Where is Jonathan now?""
My father looked at me.
"He knows you have the recording.""
My phone rang.
James.
I answered.
"Richard.""
His voice was urgent.
"Jonathan is gone.""
I closed my eyes.
"Where?""
"His office is empty. His accounts are frozen. He disappeared twenty minutes ago.""
I looked at my father.
"He knew.""
My father nodded.
"He always knew how to escape.""
I walked upstairs.
I needed to see Sophie.
When I entered her room, she was sitting on the bed.
She looked at me.
"Daddy.""
I sat beside her.
"Sweetheart, do you remember Grandpa?""
She nodded.
"He came to see Mommy.""
I looked at her.
"What did Mommy tell him?""
Sophie thought.
"She said she was scared.""
My heart broke.
"Scared of what?""
Sophie hugged her rabbit.
"She said someone she loved was hurting everyone.""
I closed my eyes.
Emily knew.
She knew someone close was betraying us.
But she didn't know how far it would go.
That night, my father finally told me everything.
After Emily discovered the fraud inside Sterling Corporation, she confronted Jonathan.
Jonathan wasn't just stealing money.
He was building a network.
Using fake accounts.
Using people.
Using Vanessa.
When Emily threatened to expose him, Jonathan tried to silence her.
My father discovered the truth too late.
The accident that took Emily's life had not been random.
Someone had tampered with her car.
The investigation had been buried.
The evidence disappeared.
And Jonathan had spent years making sure nobody looked again.
I listened quietly.
Then I asked the question I had avoided.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
My father looked broken.
"Because I was weak.""
That answer surprised me.
"I spent my life believing power meant never losing control.""
He looked toward Sophie's room.
"But I lost everything because I was too afraid to admit I failed.""
For the first time, I saw my father differently.
Not as a billionaire.
Not as a businessman.
As a man who had made terrible choices.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
From Jonathan.
One picture.
Sophie.
Taken that morning.
My blood turned cold.
Under the picture were five words.
*Come alone if you want answers.*
My father looked at the screen.
"It's a trap.""
I nodded.
"I know.""
"Then don't go.""
I looked upstairs.
May you like
At my daughter.
"I have to.""
