Chapter 8: The Woman in the Photograph
Linda couldn't breathe.
She stared at the photograph on Daniel's phone, enlarging her sister's face with shaking fingers.
Rebecca looked thinner than she remembered. Her hair was tangled, and a strip of cloth covered her mouth.
But she was unmistakably alive.
“That's my sister,” Linda whispered.
“That's Rebecca.””
Ethan approached his mother.
“Mom, is she going to be okay?””
Linda pulled him close.
“We're going to bring her home.””
Daniel looked at the message again.
Bring the original insurance documents. Come alone. You have one hour.
Hank took the phone.
“That's not happening.””
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
“They'll hurt her if I don't go.””
“And they'll hurt you if you do.””
“She's Linda's sister.””
Hank nodded.
“I know.””
“Then you understand.””
“I understand perfectly. But walking into an unknown location alone with a suitcase full of evidence isn't a rescue plan.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“We can help.””
Officer Bennett immediately intervened.
“Absolutely not. Nobody is organizing a private confrontation. This is a police matter.””
Hank looked at her.
“Then let's get the police moving.””
She nodded and called for additional units.
Daniel showed her the message.
She studied the photograph.
“Did the sender provide a location?””
“No.””
“Any phone number?””
“Unknown number.””
Officer Bennett contacted the department's technical team.
Meanwhile, Linda sat beside Ethan.
The boy was holding his father's hand.
“Dad?””
“Yes?””
“Are you going to leave again?””
Daniel looked at him.
“No, buddy.””
“But what if those people make you?””
Daniel crouched.
“Listen to me. I spent eight months trying to find you. I'm not going anywhere without making sure you're safe.””
Ethan nodded.
Then he whispered:
“Ray said you were dead because you didn't want me.””
Daniel's eyes filled.
“I should have found a way to reach you sooner. But you need to understand something. None of this was your fault.””
Ethan looked at the floor.
“I believed him.””
“You were twelve. He was an adult who was supposed to protect you. Trusting him wasn't wrong.””
Ethan finally leaned into his father.
Across the room, Hank was examining the photograph of Rebecca.
Something caught his attention.
The background.
Behind her was a faded yellow wall with a metal shelf and a small window.
He zoomed in.
“Daniel.””
Daniel looked up.
“What?””
“Have you seen this place before?””
Daniel examined the image.
Then he froze.
“That wall.””
“What about it?””
“Thomas owned a storage property outside town. An old warehouse near the abandoned railway.””
Linda looked up.
“Why would Rebecca be there?””
Daniel shook his head.
“I don't know. But the building had yellow walls. My father used to keep equipment there.””
Hank turned to Officer Bennett.
“We may have a location.””
She immediately contacted her supervisor.
Within minutes, two patrol units were dispatched to investigate.
Daniel wanted to leave immediately.
Officer Bennett stopped him.
“You stay here until we have a coordinated plan.””
“That's my sister-in-law.””
“I understand. But if you go there and alert whoever is holding her, we could lose the only lead we have.””
Daniel clenched his fists.
Then his phone vibrated.
Another message.
Thirty minutes.
A second photograph appeared.
This time, Rebecca was sitting in a chair.
A man stood behind her.
His face was partially visible.
Hank enlarged the image.
Then he went still.
“That's Samuel.””
Daniel stared.
The doctor stood behind Rebecca, holding a folder.
Linda covered her mouth.
“Why is he there?””
Daniel shook his head.
“I don't know anymore.””
Then another message arrived.
The original report. Not copies.
Daniel turned toward the suitcase.
“The original report might be inside.””
Officer Bennett looked at him.
“What report?””
“The medical examination. Samuel mentioned changing the date.””
She looked through the collected documents.
Most were copies.
But at the bottom of the suitcase was a sealed envelope marked:
*ORIGINAL MEDICAL EXAMINATION — NOVEMBER 14.*
Officer Bennett opened it.
Inside was a medical report bearing Samuel's signature.
But the date was November fourteenth.
The day Daniel had supposedly died.
There was also a handwritten correction.
The original subject's name had been crossed out.
Underneath it was Daniel Parker.
Hank stared.
“Who was the original subject?””
Officer Bennett carefully lifted the page.
The original name was partially visible beneath the ink.
*THOMAS MITCHELL.*
Daniel's stomach dropped.
“Ray used his own father's body.””
Linda began crying.
Officer Bennett photographed the document.
Then she read the next paragraph.
The report stated that the deceased had suffered fatal injuries in a vehicle collision.
But a handwritten note contradicted it.
Identity unconfirmed. Dental records pending.
Daniel looked at Hank.
“Thomas might not have died in that accident.””
Officer Bennett nodded.
“That's what we're going to establish.””
Suddenly, the motel office door opened.
A young officer rushed inside.
“Officer Bennett, we found the warehouse.””
Everyone turned.
“Is Rebecca there?”” Linda asked.
The officer shook his head.
“No one is inside.””
Daniel's heart sank.
“Then where is she?””
The officer held up a small evidence bag.
“We found this on the floor.””
Inside was a silver necklace.
Linda recognized it instantly.
“That's Rebecca's.””
She began sobbing.
Daniel picked up the bag.
“Was there anything else?””
The officer nodded.
“A handwritten note.””
He unfolded it.
Samuel brought me here. Ray moved Thomas before sunrise. The man they buried wasn't Daniel.
Hank read it twice.
Then he looked toward the parking lot.
“Where did they take her?””
The officer turned the page.
There was an address.
A farmhouse outside town.
Daniel recognized it.
His father's old property.
The place Thomas had supposedly sold years earlier.
He looked at Linda.
“That's where my father used to live.””
Linda whispered, “Why would they take Rebecca there?””
Daniel stared at the address.
“Because whatever happened eleven months ago started there.””
Officer Bennett immediately ordered units to the property.
But before anyone could move, Daniel's phone rang again.
Samuel.
Daniel answered on speaker.
“Where is Rebecca?””
Samuel sounded terrified.
“Daniel, you need to listen. Ray knows you've found the report.””
“Where is she?””
“He's taking her to the farmhouse.””
“We already know.””
Samuel went silent.
Then he whispered:
“There's something else. Thomas didn't die.””
Daniel's face went pale.
“What?””
“I examined the body eleven months ago. It wasn't Thomas.””
“Then whose body was it?””
Samuel began crying.
“I don't know. But Ray paid me to identify it as Thomas. And when I refused to sign the original report, he showed me something that made me change my mind.””
“What?””
Samuel's answer came in a broken whisper.
“He showed me a photograph of my daughter.””
The call ended.
Daniel looked at Hank.
Samuel hadn't simply helped Ray commit fraud.
He had been threatened.
And if the doctor's daughter was being held too, there might be more victims than anyone had imagined.
Then Officer Bennett's radio crackled.
A unit at the farmhouse had made visual contact.
One person was standing outside.
A man.
And he was holding a shotgun.
Officer Bennett listened.
Then her face changed.
“Daniel, I need you to stay here.””
He shook his head.
“No.””
“That's an order.””
Daniel looked at the photograph of Rebecca.
“I'm not losing another member of this family.””
May you like
Hank stepped beside him.
“Then we'll make sure nobody else gets hurt.””
