Chapter 11: The Will That Was Never Meant to Be Found

Margaret's composure cracked.

For the first time, she looked genuinely angry.

“Thomas, I warned you.””

Thomas looked directly at her.

“You've threatened me for fourteen years. I'm done being afraid.””

Daniel moved closer to his father.

“What trust documents?””

Thomas looked toward the farmhouse.

“Your grandfather left a family trust before he died. It was worth nearly twelve million dollars.””

Daniel stared.

“Twelve million?””

Margaret folded her arms.

“Your father exaggerates.””

Thomas laughed weakly.

“Do I?””

He looked at Daniel.

“Your grandfather owned commercial properties, farmland, and several manufacturing businesses. He placed everything into a trust to protect the family.””

Daniel shook his head.

“I never heard about any of this.””

“Because your mother made sure you didn't.””

Margaret rolled her eyes.

“This is ridiculous.””

Thomas continued.

“When your grandfather died, the trust was supposed to be divided between me and Daniel. But Margaret had already convinced me to sign over my portion.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because I loved her,” Thomas answered.

His voice broke.

“I thought we were building a future together.””

Margaret gave a small laugh.

“You were building nothing. You were working yourself to death.””

Thomas ignored her.

“She wanted control of the trust. I refused to give her Daniel's share.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Then why didn't I inherit it?””

“Because the trust included a condition. You had to reach thirty-five before you could access your portion.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“And Ethan?””

“Your grandfather added a provision after Ethan was born. If you died before the trust matured, Ethan would become the primary beneficiary.””

Daniel stared at his father.

“That's why they declared me dead.””

Thomas nodded.

“Ray was supposed to collect the insurance money and help Margaret gain control of Ethan's inheritance.””

Hank crossed his arms.

“Why would a guardianship application give her control of twelve million dollars?””

Thomas looked at Margaret.

“Because the trust allows a legal guardian to manage the child's assets until he turns eighteen.””

Daniel felt his stomach tighten.

“She wanted Ethan's inheritance.””

“She wanted the entire trust,” Thomas whispered.

Margaret finally lost her patience.

“Enough!””

She turned toward Officer Bennett.

“These people are inventing stories. I have legal documents proving my identity, and I have a legitimate claim to guardianship.””

Officer Bennett held up the petition.

“You also have some explaining to do about a fraudulent death certificate.””

Margaret smiled.

“Prove I knew anything about it.””

Ray began laughing inside the police vehicle.

Everyone turned.

“What's funny?”” Margaret snapped.

Ray leaned toward the window.

“You really think I'm going to take the fall for you?””

Margaret stared at him.

“Ray, don't.””

He laughed again.

“You told me you'd protect me.””

“I did protect you.””

“You used me!””

Officer Bennett approached the vehicle.

“Mr. Mitchell, if you have information about the alleged fraud, now would be a good time to share it.””

Ray looked toward Margaret.

Then he looked at Daniel.

“I have recordings.””

Margaret's face went white.

“What recordings?””

“Everything.””

“Ray.””

“You said I was stupid for keeping evidence. Remember?””

Margaret stepped toward him.

“Give me the phone.””

Ray smiled bitterly.

“You don't get to tell me what to do anymore.””

Officer Bennett raised her hand.

“Where are these recordings?””

Ray looked at her.

“On a cloud account. I backed them up six months ago.””

Margaret's voice became sharp.

“You're lying.””

Ray shook his head.

“I'm not.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“What do the recordings prove?””

Ray looked at him.

“They prove Margaret planned the insurance fraud before your father supposedly died. They prove she paid Samuel to change the medical report. And they prove she knew you were alive.””

Thomas stared.

“She knew?””

Ray nodded.

“She had people watching you.””

Daniel felt his blood run cold.

“Why?””

“Because she needed to know when you would become eligible for the trust.””

Margaret suddenly began walking toward the police vehicles.

“Officer, I want a lawyer.””

“That's your right,” Officer Bennett replied.

Ray continued.

“And there's something else.””

Everyone looked at him.

“Margaret wasn't the only one who knew Daniel was alive.””

Daniel frowned.

“Who else?””

Ray looked toward Thomas.

“Your father.””

Daniel turned.

Thomas's face collapsed.

“Dad?””

Thomas looked down.

“I knew you were alive.””

Daniel stepped backward.

“What?””

“I knew you were alive, Daniel.””

“For eleven months?””

Thomas nodded.

Daniel stared at him in disbelief.

“You let me believe my mother was dead. You let me believe you were dead. You knew my son was being kept away from me?””

Thomas's eyes filled.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“From what?””

“Your mother.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You could have called me.””

“I couldn't.””

“Why?””

Thomas struggled to breathe.

“Because Margaret had someone watching you. She told me that if I contacted you, she would make sure Ethan disappeared.””

Daniel's voice cracked.

“So you abandoned us?””

Thomas began crying.

“I thought if I stayed quiet, you and Ethan would survive.””

Daniel looked away.

Hank approached quietly.

“Daniel.””

Daniel raised a hand.

“Not now.””

Thomas reached for him.

“Son, please.””

Daniel stepped back.

“Fourteen years ago, you let me bury my mother. Eleven months ago, you let me believe you were gone too. And now I find out you were alive the entire time.””

Thomas couldn't answer.

Daniel turned toward the farmhouse.

“I need some air.””

He walked away.

Hank followed at a distance.

Behind them, Margaret was speaking to her lawyer on the phone.

Ray was being transferred to another vehicle.

Officer Bennett continued collecting evidence.

Then Marcus approached Daniel.

“Hey.””

Daniel wiped his face.

“What?””

Marcus held out a phone.

“We found something on Ray's backup account.””

Daniel looked at the screen.

It was an audio recording.

The file name was:

*MARGARET — ORIGINAL PLAN.*

Marcus pressed play.

A woman's voice filled the air.

Margaret's voice.

“If Daniel dies, Ethan becomes the beneficiary. If he doesn't, we need to make sure he cannot access the trust.””

A man's voice answered.

Samuel.

“And what about Thomas?””

Margaret laughed.

“Thomas is already a liability.””

The recording continued.

“Once the papers are signed, Ray can take care of him. Then we move Ethan somewhere nobody can find him.””

Daniel felt sick.

But there was another voice.

A voice he recognized.

His own father.

Thomas.

“Margaret, I won't let you hurt my grandson.””

The recording went silent for several seconds.

Then Margaret spoke again.

“Then perhaps you should disappear too.””

Daniel looked at Marcus.

“That's enough.””

But Marcus hadn't stopped the recording.

A final sentence played.

Margaret's voice was clear.

“Remember, Ray. Ethan is not the real target.””

Daniel froze.

The recording continued.

“He's just the key to getting Daniel's inheritance.””

Marcus stopped playback.

Daniel stared at the phone.

His mother hadn't wanted Ethan because she loved him.

She wanted him because his existence gave her access to millions.

Then another notification appeared.

A new email from the insurance company's investigator.

The subject line read:

*URGENT: ADDITIONAL BENEFICIARY DISCOVERED.*

Daniel opened it.

The attached document contained a name.

Not Margaret.

Not Ray.

Not Thomas.

The person listed as the original beneficiary of the twelve-million-dollar trust was:

*Rebecca Parker.*

Daniel looked toward the ambulance.

Rebecca was being treated inside.

And suddenly, he understood why Margaret had gone to such lengths to keep her sister-in-law silent.

May you like

Rebecca wasn't just a witness.

She was the person who legally owned the money.
